Here are a list of fun ninja party games and ideas that would be perfect for a ninja themed birthday!
We're 'Rockin' out today with a Rockstar Birthday Party! I'm digging deep into the picture vaults and pulling out some past parties that I've never blogged. These parties are 'pre-blog' days, so you might notice the pictures aren't exactly spectacular... plus no over-the-top dessert table display! Nonetheless, sit back and enjoy my daughter's 9th birthday. The Theme: Rockstar! Having an agenda is a must at any of my parties! We don't always follow it to the minute, but it sure is nice to have a plan. First up: Decorate Sunglasses! Every rockstar has to have cool shades. Curling ribbons and sticker gems and jewels (from Michaels) were used. The girls wrote their names with Sharpie pens on the glasses You might notice that each girl received a mirror ball necklace. (Glasses and mirrored ball necklaces from Oriental Trading.) Up Next: Hair and Make-up! Rockstars can't go on stage without crazy hair and make-up! I covered my couch with plastic tablecloths and propped up every mirror in the house. This made the perfect 'backstage' make-up area. Wild hair pieces, dollar store make-up and diva bands were set out to use. Pink ribbon skirts from a previous party were available too. Oh, how the girls loved this activity! It was hard to pull them away! Hurry girls, it's Stage Time! I ordered this plastic backdrop (Oriental Trading, again) and hung it on the wall. Instant stage! Grab your inflatable guitar! (Guess where these came from?) Music is ready! Our karaoke machine was picked up last year at a neighborhood garage sale. The girls chose to sing songs from Disney movies and Christian artists that we had available. Some even chose to sing Christmas songs! We separated the girls into 2 groups. One group could perform while the other was the audience. Lots of singing, but even more dancing! A bit of choreography on the sidelines, too! Up Next: A Dance Off! (Just so you know...our family was very late to the whole gaming system trend.) This Double Dance Mat was plugged into the TV and the girls battled each other to do the moves on the screen. After all that performing, it was time for some nourishment. (My daughter's birthday is in December--which is why you see the Christmas tree.) Our Rockstar Meal included: -'Rockin' Dogs' (bar-b-qued hot dogs) -'Orange you're cool' mandarin oranges -'Snappy' chips and pretzel mix -'Dying of thirst' water bottles -'Electric' Capri Sun juice Rockstar cupcakes and cookies for dessert. I found 'Hannah Montana' sugar guitars and stars to put on top of the cupcakes. The plastic guitars hanging from the chandelier are 'Hannah Montana' guitar Easter eggs. (Random, I know.) And while the girls waited to be escorted home... more dancing! The parents were quite suprised to see their 'rockstar' girls! What fun! We celebrated Ava's 7th birthday this past Saturday with a camping party. And as usual, our household was a crazy whirlwind up to the moment guests started to arrive. The weather ended up being perfect and the day could not have been more fun. Here are a few of the highlights- It all started with the invitation created by my wonderfully talented friend Carolyn. You can find these invitations here. Guests were directed to the party with a "Welcome to Camp Ava" sign. I made seven tents for the kids to play in which were placed inside the house and in the back yard. (Look for the tutorial in a few days.) The kids explored the back yard during the scavenger hunt. Each child received a bag, "scavenger hunt" card (available here) and a twig pencil, so they could keep track of their treasures. I was amazed at how much the kids enjoyed this activity. I will definitely keep this in mind when planning other parties in the future : ) The menu consisted of classic camping food with a couple added extras- hot dogs, coleslaw, chili, roasted corn, pasta salad, fruit salad, chuck-wagon beans, lemonade and chips. I made some picnic silverware packets, so it would be easier for the kids to keep up with their silverware...and to add a little more camping feel : ) I finally made these mason jar glasses- something I have wanted to do for a while. The ribbon around the glasses inspired the color palette and is actually the pattern that is carried throughout the party details (you can see it on the tents). Ava is very un-childlike in that she does not care for icing, and so the birthday cake is always a bit of an issue. This year, since she had decided on a camping party, I thought s'mores would be the perfect treat. She wanted to have cupcakes for all of her friends though, so I used the s'more theme and created a s'more cupcake. The cupcakes were one of my favorite things at the party. They had all of the essential elements - graham crackers, chocolate, marshmallows and the ooey gooiness (is that how it is spelled?) of a typical s'more. As a party favor, I made "Camp Ava Survival Kit"s for all of the kids. Each box contained "fish bait" - gummy worms and "S'mores Trail Mix" - made of golden grahams, chocolate morsels and marshmallows. Another year... another birthday... and hopefully... another lasting memory for my darling Ava. ***You can find the tutorial for the A-frame tents here and for the s'more cupcakes here.

Little M&M chose Pokémon for his birthday party theme this year. Although this is not something I am terribly familiar with, I still had a ton of fun putting this party together for him. Take a look at some of our party details below: FOOD Here is our beverage table (the free printable water bottle labels came from here): Our party began at 2pm, so we just served snack foods at the beginning of the party, cake at the end of the party and then ordered pizza for whomever was still around at night. This was a family-only party so that was basically everyone! Here are the foods we served as people arrived: And here are our three homemade cookie cakes. We wanted to use primarily chocolate/vanilla frosting so we only made one Pokéball cake out of pre-packaged, colored frosting. PARTY ACTIVITIES and GAMES We love putting together fun games for our parties! Here is what we did today: GAME #1: This game was for the kids and the adults. We simply placed gummy worms in a jar and asked our guests to guess how many "caterpie" were in the jar. At the end of the party we peeked at the guesses, and the person who guessed the right amount (or came the closest) was able to take the jar home with them! GAME #2: Our first hands-on activity of the day was to design a pokéball. We purchased smooth foam balls from the craft store, and offered crayons for them to use to draw on them. I found a perfect chart on Google with some of the most popular pokéballs to serve as inspiration (though the link is faulty so I cannot credit the original maker of this awesome chart). Some of the kids decorated a specific pokéball from the chart: and others designed their very own: GAME #3: Our next game was a scavenger hunt! I created this pokédex in Photoshop Elements and hid each Pokémon image featured on it around the main level of the house. This was surprisingly a super engaging and well-loved activity! The kids were so excited to run around looking high and low for these Pokémon. Later when asked what his favorite part of the party was, the scavenger hunt was definitely mentioned! GAME #4: One thing I know about Pokémon is that you've "Gotta catch 'em all!" So that was the main idea behind this next game. I purchased red and white bowls from the Dollar Tree, and added one Pokémon image to each, with increasing point values. The kids had to use their own pokéball (which they decorated earlier in the party) to toss into the bowls. After five throws, the person with the highest sum of points was the winner. They stood behind a masking tape line just a few feet away from the first bowl. Each kid threw the ball five times, and I was so pleased that everyone got at least a couple shots into the bowls. Some sharp throwers even "caught" the 100-point MewTwo! GAME #5: I discovered this fun science activity on this website. It was such a great addition to the party! We purchased a bag of miniature Pokémon from Amazon. Using a 2:1 mixture of baking soda and water, we hid them inside little eggs. Then, using pipettes and vinegar, the kids were able to "hatch" some Pokémon eggs! We were lucky in that our bag of assorted Pokémon contained 6 Pikachus! So we were sure to include those (distinguishing them with yellow food coloring dots on the eggs) to ensure each guest could hatch a Pikachu (only my two kids had to share one). We had each of the 7 kids hatch a total of three eggs, and then they could take them home with them! For the kids this was a big hit, but note that the vinegar smell was strong at this moment, and the adults definitely noticed! Perhaps open a window or do this activity outside if you are able! GAME #6: Our final game was a Beedrill Balloon Pop! We always like to have some kind of balloon game at our parties, but I wanted something different than the usual. So we blew up about 50-60 yellow and black balloons, filling some of them with images of Weedles and Kakunas (these are lesser evolved Beedrills). The object of the game was for the kids to pop all the balloons to find the one balloon containing the Mega Beedrill (the highest evolved Beedrill). They had SO much fun doing this. And...if you could believe it...the Mega Beedrill was discovered in the very LAST balloon! PRIZES Obviously the winner of the first game, guessing the number of Caterpies in the jar, received the jar of Caterpies. But for the other games that yielded a winner (Gotta Catch 'Em All and Beedrill Balloon Pop) we gave away these chocolate bar "medals." I quickly printed a little image to put on each of them. PARTY FAVORS I turned white favor bags into pokéballs using construction paper. Inside each was a Pokémon cup (Party City), Pokémon pencils and tattoos (Amazon) and some miniature chocolate bars with Pokémon face labels (free labels from here). Obviously, each guest also brought home their decorated pokéballs and the three figurines they each hatched from eggs. It was a tremendous success, and Little M&M was so happy! WE LOVE THROWING PARTIES!
