"Against Forgetting" is a fine art print of an original piece by Nina Montenegro. A wax rubbing of a tree stump is adjacent to an inked fingerprint. This piece has been featured in Orion Magazine, Camas Magazine, and High Country News. Artist Statement: I encountered an enormous stump on Orcas Island (likely a Doug Fir) and tenderly took a rubbing with wax crayon. I had always marveled at the similarity between the rings of a tree and the rings of our human fingerprints, but I was shocked to see the rings actually align when I took an inked fingerprint and enlarged it to the scale of the tree rings. What resulted was a harmonious depiction of humanity's kinship (and belonging) with nature. Dimensions are 10" x 10", 14" x 14", or 20" x 20". Open edition, titled and signed. Printed digitally on archival paper with matte finish. Background is printed color, not the paper color. Unframed print. --------------------------------------- 10"x10" and 14”x 14" will ship in a protective, sturdy flat. 20" x 20" will be shipped in a big, sturdy tube. Visit www.ninamontenegro.com for more details on the series this piece belongs to. All designs © Nina & Sonya Montenegro Reproduction rights do not transfer with sale of items.

Taller than trees and towering over buildings, Johanna Goodman‘s pieced together female forms appear to stretch far above the landscapes before them. The collaged works, which combine elements of art, design, and architecture, are a part of Goodman’s series titled The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings, which aims to explore the individual’s role in history and popular culture. “[The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings] draws its inspiration from a wide spectrum of sources—including magical realism, surrealism, and symbolism—and more specific references such cultural artifacts as talismans, idols, totems, and all of the material detritus that surrounds all of us all the time,” Goodman told Ms. More

Fixated on a mythological depiction of nature, Japanese artist Ishibashi Yui sculpts feral children that appear to belong to another realm of reality. Pallid, hairless human bodies become fused with roots and vines, brought to life through a mixture of wood, resin, clay, wire and paint. Oftentimes, the figures appear imprisoned by the flora. In Then, It Returns Slowly, a pregnant woman's face erupts with flesh-colored growths that form a tree trunk. The character in Dream of 10 Billion Years succumbs to a similar fate as her limbs are fused with a chair and her head becomes a bouquet-like arrangement of leaves and branches. These sculptures personify nature as a force that reclaims its power from its human occupants. Take a look at some of Yui's sculptures after the jump.
The main Parts of a Tree are the roots, trunk, branches and twigs, leaves, buds, flowers and fruit. A tree's roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil, store sugar and anchor the tree upright in the ground. All trees have lateral roots that branch into smaller and smaller roots and usually extend horizontally well beyond the branch tips; large trees typically have roots extending 20-40 metres or more from the trunk. The vast majority of the root system is located in the upper 10–30 cm of so

The Japanese observe the spring blossoms as a part of hanami - the appreciation of the transient beauty - but you don‘t need a deep, philosophical meaning to enjoy a leisurely stroll down these picturesque streets. And for those of us still in the icy grip of winter, they‘re a nice reminder of the coming spring.
