I am so excited about this new game! I wanted to engage all my students in an activity where they were finding the slope of a linear equation from a graph. I remembered playing "I have, Who has..." games with my elementary students back in student teaching. Click here to see this resource in my TPT Store. I have all my students stand up in the room. This gets them up and out of their seat! I pass out the cards to each student. There are 36 cards total. If you have less than 36 students give some students two cards. I tell the students to go ahead and look at their graph on their card and find the slope of the given line. Each graph already has two points given so this helps as well! You can start at any card because they all loop back to each other. You can start with a card or have a student start the game. I set the stopwatch on my phone to time the students or you can Click here for a free Google stopwatch. As the teacher, find the card that you are going to start with, on the Answer Key. You can follow along on the key to make sure the students are correct. If the question doesn't match the answer key then that student is incorrect. They love competing with other classes to see who can get through the loop the fastest. You really have to pay attention and know your card's slope! Our first run took about 7 minutes. The second run was only 3 minutes! You can also write the times from each class on the board and give a small incentive to the class who can do it the fastest! Have fun! Click here to get this Game for your students!

We have just finished up our fall conferences at my school. One important tool that we always use, revisit, and expand,as we write up our conference notes, is the master record that we keep for each child. This year my co-teacher and I revisited the form we had been using, which was an inherited formContinue reading "Montessori Record Keeping"
Incorporate the cross-curricular approach to teaching by assigning projects that integrate multiple subjects and allowing students to explore various standards simultaneously.
This is a great activity for a cooperative learning group! I put students into teams of three to four and gave them the challenge of creating a "Life Size Person" using quadrilaterals, triangles, semi-circles and quarter circles. I helped them cut the shapes with my paper cutter. All they had to do was tell me where to cut and give me dimensions. I did this so that the cuts would be straight and easier for them to measure. Yes! Measure! They did that also! They had to find their dimensions and then use the correct formula to find the area. All of their work was shown on the back of their "Life Size Person". (Next time, I will have them show it on the front.) All pieces were taped together on the back. Great conversations took place as students were creating. I heard one team even say something about using numbers that were easier to divide by two for the triangles, so that they wouldn't have a decimal answer! That is a pretty clever observation! Students also discussed which formulas to use, how to use them and my favorite, "you don't have to divide by two because there are two congruent semi-circles that make a whole circle when put together". Students also discussed the attributes of the shapes used. The final product had the total area of the composite figure. Click HERE for a free copy of the directions sheet!!! Here is another activity on Area of Composite Figures that will get your students walking and talking about math! Click here! If you use this activity in your classroom, I would love for you to share the amazing creations your students come up with on this post. Thanks for looking and have a great day!!!
