Here is a Marzano's Student Self-Assessment Rubric that I use with my students across all subjects areas. This scale can be used before, during, and after instruction. Before introducing a new lesson, I use this scale to determine students' prior knowledge. Once I announce the standard for today's lesson, I ask the students to use the rubric to see how they think they see themselves using the standard. Students show me a number using their fingers. During instruction, I assess my students' learning and understanding of the goal being taught. I ask my students where they see themselves on the rubric now? Are they moving up or down on the rubric? Again, I ask them to show me fingers. After instruction, I use this scale as a measurement for grading to determine if my students have mastered the learning goal. Sometimes for a closure activity, I ask students to rate themselves again where they see themselves on the rubic? Do they need more practice or do we keep going? These are great for letting me know where my students are in understanding and it lets the students know where they stand with their thinking too. We’ve been working with shapes in math and focusing on writing dialogue with the correct use of quotation marks. Have you ever noticed that when you start teaching about these that suddenly, “every” “single” “word” “gets” “them”? Ha! As we practiced identifying shapes and their attributes, here’s how we tied in our writing and practiced the correct use of quotation […]

Guided Problem Solving helps students learn to factor polynomials using Greatest Common Factor and Grouping. The packet can be used during lecture as guided notes. It begins with finding prime factors to determine the GCF, then uses that concept to teach how to factor polynomials using GCF; factor 4-term polynomial expressions using GCF and Grouping; and factor and solve 4-term polynomial equations using GCF, Grouping, and the Zero Product Property. This packet will guide students through the process of learning to factor. They will: ~ Use prime factor trees and a chart to guide them through the process of determining the Greatest Common Monomial Factor of a polynomial and then factoring the polynomial. ~ Factor out the monomial or binomial GCF from polynomial expressions. ~ Factor the monomial GCF from an equation and solve using the Zero Product Property. ~ Factor 4-term expressions using GCF and Grouping. ~ Factor 4-term equations using GCF and Grouping, and solve using the Zero Product Property. These have been my #1 selling item, and I actually was not even going to put it on TPT. One of my co-workers (A. Guillot ;-) made a comment when she saw them on the work table, and made me realize that someone might want to actually buy these. THANKS, Mrs. Guillot!!! These are my #2 best selling item. I have many different colors and patterns, but the concept is the same. If you need numbers for your classroom, you might want to check these out. I created this because I think I was losing my mind with all of my students out of the classroom at the same time... UGHHHHH! So, this was a Thanksgiving project -- I pray it works. I'm going to use clothespins for the students to manipulate their names. The poster is beautiful blown up! Once again, our media center ROCKS! This is a huge hit with my kiddos. We have word flash cards, and the students love playing "Be the Teacher", but of course, I have a few students who aren't strong in the reading dept. and feel a little overwhelmed with the High Frequency Words - but math is their specialty. This gives them the opportunity to SHINE!
