There are many ways to build a castle with children. Once I already made a small cardboard toy castle with my kids, but this time we wanted something more impressive. For our castle we collected cardboard boxes of different size, and toilet paper tubes. Using those building blocks, paint and some colored paper, we created this castle with floors, round towers, windows and a cone-shaped roof. This project is very easy and straightforward. Reverse the boxes, stack them one onto another, put the toilet paper rolls at the corners, paint. Place towers also at the top and around the gate. I showed how to make a cone in my post about gigantic pencils, the cone-shaped roof can be made the same way. A flag from a toothpick and piece of paper is the final touch. I think you may enjoy the Cardboard castle by Ann Wood. It's more of a piece of art than a kids craft project. Take a look.

One of the things I love most about this time of year is how excited so many people get to spend time with their families and friends over the holidays. In all the excitement, though, there are always some unexpected lulls. Whether you're their awesome uncle or their godmother from another state, here are some new ideas to help you have fun and connect with the children in your life. Make them in 30 minutes or less, toss them in your bag, and you'll be prepared no matter how unexpected the lull.

Hi everyone! Sorry for being MIA for about a week, but we finally did our cross country move. Now we're calling California home.... and trying to tackle mountains of unpacked boxes. Eeek! Right now I'm taking a quick break and figured I'd upload a fun DIY toy post. During our last week in Jersey, I kept wanting to craft something... but found it difficult given that everything had already been packed away. So while we were playing outside with friends, I spotted this Y-shaped stick and thought it was the perfect for making a slingshot! DIY Paper Slingshots! (This post contains affiliate links. Thank you so much for your support.) When I told hubby about my idea, he showed me how he used to make slingshots as a kid. So I took his design and adapted it to the twig. Now, I know that some of you consider this a weapon... but we made sure to set some ground rules and only aim at objects and NOT at people. Materials Needed to Make DIY Paper Slingshots Strong Y-shaped stick (or you could use your fingers.. see below for photo) Rubber bands Paper Scissors Let's Make Paper Slingshots! 1. Cut out rectangles from paper. (I think my rectangles were about 1" x 2" or 2 1/2".) 2. Then, it's time to fold them so that they can be shot in the air. I simply folded them lengthwise first, and then again, and then folded them in half, and then in half again. Once you've made one, it's super easy to make others! 3. Then take your rubber band and wrap it around both ends of your slingshot. To load the slingshot, wrap your folded paper around the middle of the rubber band. (Your paper basically sandwiches both strands of the rubber band. Your hands should be holding the two ends of your folded paper together.) Then, pull back and let go! Here's what it looks like from the front! If you have a tough time finding a nice, strong Y-shaped stick, no worries. You can also just use your fingers too as the slingshot. I definitely lived out my Katniss Everdeen fantasies while shooting these around the apartment. :) So hopefully you'll have fun making these with your kids too. I challenged myself about a month ago to make as many homemade gifts as I could for my children this year. We have a tradition in our little family to do 3 Gifts of Christmas. Gift of Meaning, Gift of Usefulness and the Gift of Wonder. The stocking is not included and can be filled with as many fun things that will fit :) That is where my homemade challenge falls into place here. I have made several stocking stuffers and my children's gift of meaning for my 3 kids and I'll be sharing those with you over the next little bit. Second homemade item this year are these Ribbon Streamers. I first saw streamers on etsy, and thought how fun and easy they would be to make. I bought very large D Rings from Joann's They also have spools of ribbon for 50 cents each. You simply tie your ribbon onto the rings in the length that you like. That is it. For around $5 I was able to make 4 streamers and I even have ribbon left over to make more. I am so excited to see my girls dancing around, waving these ribbon streamers as they giggle!
