I have been planning for our Easter / Spring theme that we will start next week, so we did just a random, quick tot school week with no real theme. Just some random ideas I have seen that I wanted to do sometime. Punkin rolled a dice that had d's and b's on it and had to "graph" her rolls by tracing the correct letter and telling me what it was. She still confuses these two letters, so it was good reinforcement for her. She also spelled her word wall words (sight words) using magnetic letters on her magnadoodle. She did this over and over throughout the week. She had fun playing sight word hockey with color words. I got this idea from Making Learning Fun. She had to read me the color word on the "puck" before she could "shoot" it into the goal. We worked on this CVC word activity together. She did really well. I liked how the middle box was red, so she knew she needed to listen for / find a red letter "sticky vowel." I printed these pages from Have Fun Teaching. Punkin hunted for letter tiles in her rainbow rice and then placed them on her color word sheet to spell her color words. I forgot to take a picture of her playing, but we made this ring toss and had fun playing it one afternoon. This idea came from Little Learning for Two. And she used her dot markers to make this really neat "tape resist" painting. I put velcro dots on jumbo craft sticks and let Punkin make shapes and letters with them. This great idea came from Tot Treasures. She played Bean Bag Toss to help reinforce counting by tens. I also had her hop along the plates and say / count the numbers as she went. She still spends lots of time building elaborate "castles." SOOO...one day I gave her a whole package of plastic cups, showed her how to stack a few of them, and then she surprised me by making .... THIS! She was so proud! She even knocked it down a few times just so she could rebuild it! It was nice to have kind of a laid back week. Now gearing up for Easter stuff! I am linking up to Tot School and Preschool Corner!
This week we focused on community helpers in Tot School. We could literally do this theme for a month because there are so many different jobs and places that we could use for inspiration. But this was our first time really talking about the community and jobs, so I kept our learning to a […]

Never planned to homeschool, now wouldn't trade it for the world
Recently we made our first purchase from Scholastic. Honey Pot had been bringing home order forms every month, that we usually ignore because I could find the same books for cheaper on Amazon. Then I saw this boxed set of Magic Tree House books 1-49. It was a way better deal than I had found anywhere else, so we placed an order, and she was lugging it home from school in no time. Little M&M and I have been reading through them so fast--he loves them! And they have become the first chapter books that Honey Pot sits down and reads all by herself. She is even ahead of us! I enjoy them too. The text and plot are simple enough for very young children to understand; and yet the time periods and places that the characters visit are so varied and fun to read about! I knew I had to offer some extension activities to go along with them! Check out what we did with the first quartet of stories: Magic Tree House #1 - Dinosaurs Before Dark The first story introduces our two main characters: Jack and Annie. They happen upon a tree house full of books, and when they open one and wish to go there, they do! Their first adventure brings them to the time of dinosaurs. So we did a fun science activity today with our toy dinosaurs--hatching eggs! I discovered this while researching ideas for Little M&M's Pokemon party. The tutorial I followed comes from The Science Kiddo, and was super simple to set up. We mixed baking soda and water together (3:1 ratio) and molded them around the dinosaurs. Then we gave them a speckled design with a cotton swab and food coloring, and froze them for 3 hours. Finally it was time to hatch the eggs! The invitation included one egg for each of the kids in a bowl, as well as a cup full of vinegar and pipettes: The vinegar reacted with the baking soda, and began to fizz and melt away, revealing the dinosaur inside. They had so much fun with this! Since we were testing this recipe out for Little M&M's birthday party, we reserved the last two eggs for a short while later. We wanted to compare how long it would take to "hatch" the eggs right out of the freezer, versus waiting 35-45 minutes. We decided that the latter works much better! Magic Tree House #2 - The Knight at Dawn Today's activity: a craft the kids could play with when it's finished! I raided the recycling bin for materials, pulled out my trusty hot glue gun and created a castle for the kids to decorate. Upon seeing it, they were really excited but requested some walls inside, so I added those. Then I had each of them choose two paint colors, and they got busy painting! Once it had dried they used scissors, construction paper and glue to make a moat around the castle. Then, as their own idea, they grabbed markers, and added some rocks and a path leading away from the drawbridge. Here is the finished product! They grabbed some small character toys and set up a little game inside. Note they even included some sea friends swimming in the moat! They had so much fun playing with their castle. Great activity! Magic Tree House #3 - Mummies in the Morning In this story, Jack and Annie help to decipher ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. I thought that would be a perfect activity to do today! While browsing the internet for secret codes the kids could decipher, I found this alphabet on a website called Glyph Viewer. After some copying and pasting, I was able to produce two secret messages. Honey Pot's would reveal part two of our activity. Here they are decoding their messages. Honey Pot just established "mummy hot dogs" and looked at me with astonishment! Here is Honey Pot's finished work: "You solved the code! Let's make mummy hot dogs for dinner!" And here is Little M&M's page, which I wanted to make shorter and using words he is already familiar with so that he may read it himself: "Mom and Dad love you!" So that night for dinner, the kids helped us to wrap strips of crescent rolls around (turkey) hot dogs. They just loved this activity, and it sure tasted great! Magic Tree House #4 - Pirates Past Noon We did a great STEM activity today to accompany the pirate-themed book we had recently finished reading! I grabbed some assorted materials from around the house, and set up this invitation for the kids to come home to: The note says "Build a boat that can float. How many gold doubloons can it carry?" And so nearby, this was waiting for their completed projects: They were so excited to begin! Both kids grabbed the scissors and some foil. I'm not sure if they knew yet what their designs would be, but this is how they started: Little M&M created this sail from the foam sheet, tape and rubber bands. But we worked together creating a wide base for his boat (several plastic straws wrapped in foil). First we tested to see if it would float, and once we saw it did, he added on some gold doubloons! His boat was a success! Seeing the craft sticks sadly neglected in the bin, I decided to quickly make a boat of my own. Also a successful float that could transport our gold doubloons! Finally it was Honey Pot's turn. Now, I should mention that I did not contribute to this creation in any way. She didn't ask for help with ideas or construction, so I gave none. Take a look at this boat!! And that beautiful sail includes a swinging rope for the pirates to play on. I was thoroughly impressed, and look, it floats! She added on all of the gold doubloons too. Well done! Afterward I allowed the kids to play with their boats. I gave Little M&M a separate container of blue water for his. They each grabbed some characters and stayed entertained for a long while with this! If you enjoyed these activities, take a look at some similar things we've done in the past! Luv Bug is 34 months old This ended up being an off week for Tot School. Daddy was home at the beginning of the week, so we just enjoyed family time together. Toward the end of the week, Luv Bug pulled a muscle in her neck while sleeping. Poor baby woke up crying and holding her neck. I called her doctor and got her an appointment, though we had to wait over an hour and a half in the waiting room. She was in so much pain, she just layed on my lap and fell asleep. Unfortunately, that nap made her neck stiffen more, so she was screaming when the doctor tried to check her. The good news was that it was nothing serious, just a tight, pulled muscle. It was terrifying though, seeing my baby in such pain. She's pretty active too, so seeing her just lay in bed for 36 hours before trying to get up was scary. She's doing much better and is able to move well. She's still guarding her neck and favoring it on the right. Is there anything more heartbreaking than seeing your baby hurt, asking you to make it better, and NOT being able to? :( I had prepared several trays but she did not do them all. The ones we didn't get around to, I'll save for next week. I bought this game at a local discount store. The little things at the bottom left are catapults (sp?). You try to launch the monkeys onto the tree. Lots of fun. Luv Bug only needed a little help loading the monkeys. She was pretty good at aiming and figuring out how much pressure she needed to launch it just right. Luv Bug is very compassionate. This was so sweet. I launched a monkey a bit too high and he landed on the floor. Luv Bug ran over, picked him up and put all the other monkeys around him to make sure he was ok:) I bought these unit cubes at the dollar tree a few months ago, but this is the first time I put them out. I didn't give Luv Bug any direction, I wanted to see how she chose to play with these. She thought up so many ways to use them and played with these several times this week. She stacked them, and finished patterns I had made while she was playing with toys. (this was the only time I 'intitiated' anything with these. I just made patterns, she glanced over to see what I was doing and came over and finished on her own.) This was taken about an hour before the first time she got up since she hurt herself. She was playing with the blocks and asked for her cars. In this picture, Holly Shiftwell was trapped and needed the other cars to rescue her. The rescue cars got trapped too, so Luv Bug rescued them herself. Her magnetic pom poms. These are so much fun. I saw the idea first in this post over at 1+1+1=1. I added this 1-10 sticker sheet which I found over at Confessions of a Homeschooler. Carissa over at 1+1+1=1 put together this awesome Tot Time Notebook. Luv Bug loves this, but where it is kept, there are so many arts and crafts materials, that it gets overlooked. I put it on a tray and she went through the whole thing. Right now, she likes to trace and color each page as fast as she can so that she can wipe it off with a baby wipe. She did this a lot! She's been asking to glue things lately, so I gathered some items (2 of each in different sizes) so she could make a BIG/little collage. She did really well. After she finished gluing everything on, she went back and put a drop of glue on each item. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are a few other winter activities we were able to get to. This handprint polar bear we did 2 weeks ago and I realized that I forgot to take a picture of it. I found the idea on pinterest and I thought it was too cute. Another craft I forgot to take pictures of. This was done last week. I had made these with the preschool class I used to have. Mine is the boring one on the bottom. I love how cute Luv Bug's turned out. We glued magnetic strips to the bottoms and they are now hanging on our fridge. She was playing with her Arctic Tube from her winter sensory bin. We put the pipe cleaner into the igloo and she had her animals follow the 'path' home. Snowflake matching from Confession of a Homeschooler's letter s pre-k unit. I set out 3 winter mini books. Luv Bug ran to get her crayons so she could color them. The first one is called, What Can We Do In The Snow, found here at Hubbard's Cupboard. This next one is called Snowflakes. I found it here years ago, but am having trouble finding it now. This is called Fun in the Snow, I found free at TPT. This patterning activity I found over at Musings of Me. Unfortunatly, it is no longer available. I downloaded this igloo alphabet matching file folder game here. I didn't think when I assembled this that she would need the igloos side by side, so I had to cut the file folder apart. We played this Winter Bingo (from TPT) game again, big hit with Luv Bug. We watched The Snowy Day from Scholastic. We had planned a playdate for the end of the week (we cancelled when Luv Bug hurt herself), so one night after Daddy came home, I went upstairs to vacuum and put some things in the attic. I set out these snowmen alphabet cards from this unit I purchased at TPT. I set out the capital ones in a row (we somehow lost E before we even had a chance to play. Then I hid the lowercase cards around the room. While Daddy watched her, Luv Bug ran around to find the hidden lowercase cards and match them to the capital ones. I asked him to take pictures for me. (I absolutely love this pic) She called up to me when she'd finished. This is what I saw when I came downstairs. Excuse the mess. I was getting ready to vacuum downstairs next, so everything was put on furniture. -------------------------------------------------------------------- A few random things we did this week. (Not neccesarily taken during tot school time) She loves playing with her magnetic doll. (Thanks Aunt S. and Uncle J.) This was one of her infant toys. I forgot about it until I was cleaning. She still loves it, so we may keep it out awhile. I've been seeing these water beads on a lot of blogs, so I finally ordered some. They are awesome. Luv Bug has been asking every day for them. (Little ones need careful supervision while playing with these. If swallowed, they can cause intestinal blockage). I love how different they look in different containers. Just a cute outdoor shot, looking at a worm. All in all a fun week, minus Luv Bug's injury, of course. Looking Forward to Daddy having another long weekend! -------------------------------------------------------- Some of the books we enjoyed this week:
