Purchase a print of this photograph [June 12, 2004] With the Mulvane tornado now fully formed and moving quickly northeast, we made haste to keep up with it. This beautiful tornado held another surprise in store though as we found ourselves in the perfect location with the sun's rays at the precise angle to witness an incredibly well-formed rainbow within the hook precipitation as the sun shone on the condensation tube making it almost blindingly white. This was the perfect example of how nature can be so lovely yet also so dangerous at the same time. Entire trees were being uprooted and slung several hundred feet into the air and around the condensation tube. It was truly an incredible sight to witness. Shortly after this photo was taken, the tornado moved past the house in the foreground and destroyed a farmhouse just behind the ridge. Incredulity turned to heartbreak. The devastation was incredible as an explosion of debris erupted. Whole pieces of the roof and trusses could be seen rotating around the funnel in sync with the thousands of other projectiles that made up the debris cloud. A short time later, small pieces of insulation would float gently to the ground around us mimicking some horrible snow. Within the span of a second, everything that family had worked for was literally gone. Fortunately, they had heeded weather warnings and taken shelter in their basement, so there were no human fatalaties with this storm. This tornado would dissipate shortly after as a long thin rope, leaving nothing behind but a cloud of dirt and dust lingering in the air. The National Weather Service Field Office in Wichita conducted a survey of the tornado's path and concluded that the damage was consistent with an F3 ranking on the Fujita Scale.
Ash cloud from Mt. Augustine
From Wednesday morning - there was not a bit of word about storms in the forecast. And then this monster random storm pops up out of nowhere - with the most bizarre asperatus cloud I've ever seen. And the lightning was spectacular. The only photoshopping I did on this photo was to increase the contrast in the clouds so it looked more like what the human eye was actually seeing - photos tend to come out flatter than the real image. So this is pretty much what it looked like - lots of peeps were outside, staring up at the sky at these weird cloud formations.
