Mindfulness meditation is a way of focusing the mind so that it is fully attending to what’s happening right now, to what we’re doing, and to the space that we’re currently in. Cultivating mindfulness means to be present, to pay attention, and to be aware of our emotions and the way that we respond to them. Recent neuroscience research points to many benefits of mindfulness meditation: ➧ increased focus ➧ a sense of calm ➧ decreased stress ➧ decreased anxiety ➧ improved impulse control ➧ greater empathy for others ➧ improved conflict resolution skills Our students need opportunities to practice mindfulness mediation. Since the human mind often wanders from the present. Our brains have a tendency to become absorbed with thoughts about the past or the future. This kind of thinking makes us anxious. Academic pressure now affects kids as early as kindergarten, resulting in less time for play and other stress-reducing activities. Today’s students are faced with an unprecedented amount of anxiety. The pressure only grows greater in middle and high school. Surveys have found students reporting stress and fatigue as much as 75% of the time. What’s needed is a way to decrease anxiety and help students to manage their emotions. That’s where mindfulness comes in. Infusing moments of mindfulness in the classroom is not only powerful, it’s also quite simple. In general, to practice mindfulness, have students start by bringing attention to their own body. Then, have them breathe in through their noses and out through their mouths. When they notice that their mind has wondered away from the present moment, they should gently bring their attention back to their breathing. It’s also a great idea to intentionally plan moments of mindfulness in the classroom! Here are some simple ways to do just that… 1. A Mindful Moment At the beginning of class, or after a transition, have your students close their eyes and take several deep breaths. Ask them to pay attention to their breathing and what it feels like. 2. A Mindful Break Once or twice during a standard length class, just stop. Have your students stand up and stretch and then sit back down and do 30 seconds of mindful breathing. This takes no more than a minute, and it gives everyone a needed break. 3. A Mindful Quote Use motivational and inspirational quotes to help focus students’ minds during a moment of mindfulness. It’s as easy as sharing a quote, or you can download this free set of mindfulness quotes and put together a container to pull from all year long. Attention Check During a long lesson, stop and ask your students to pause and “check their attention.” Is their mind on what is being done in class, or has it been wandering? This gives kids the chance to deliberately redirect their attention to the matter at hand. 5. Finger Labyrinths Traditionally, labyrinths are used for mediation and relaxation. Often, people walk through labyrinths. Give students the same sensation with finger labyrinths. I’ve made a collection of them that students can use when they need to focus their minds. Please send me MINDFULNESS RESOURCES! 6. Mindful Closure At the end of class, have students close their eyes and focus on their breathing again. Ask them to think of what they have learned and perhaps congratulate themselves on their progress and accomplishments. As teachers. we have many opportunities to introduce students to mindfulness practices. Of course, one of the most important ways we can do this is by cultivating mindfulness in ourselves. If we, as teachers, are present and aware of our own emotions and responses, we set an invaluable example for our students. Many of these mindfulness activities work well in a Calming Corner in the Classroom. Add the quotes or labyrinths to the calming corner to help students when they need to take a step back and become more present in the moment. My kids are obsessed with all things trucks and construction. This theme was a blast to put together, and my boys had the best time learning and playing. Construction Preschool Theme This pack is full of hands on learning activities to practice various math, literacy, and writing skills. Tool Painting- Grab your play tools and add some PAINT! This is a fun process art activity. Our favorite was our toy drill. The paintbrush fit perfectly into the drill for an awesome painting experience. Shaving Cream Blocks- We love our foam blocks. I added some shaving cream and my boys had a blast building. Block Painting- We used the foam blocks again for this painting activity. We dipped the blocks in paint and stamped different designs and buildings. Building Block Letters- Use blocks to build each letter. Rock Letters- Use small trucks to find a rock with each letter. Drive it to the matching letter. Subitizing Number Sort- Sort each number. Popsicle Stick Letter Build- Build each letter with popsicle sticks. Then trace each letter with dry erase marker. Counting Rocks- Pick a number card and count that many rocks into the truck. Dirt Writing Tray- Fill a writing tray with cocoa (dirt). Form each letter in the tray. Construction Name Craft- Build each child's name with cones. Print with Legos and paint on the background. Construction Sensory Bin- I threw some black beans, rocks, and toy trucks in this sensory bin. My boys build several chutes and ramps out of recyclables. They were a fun addition to the bin. Sticky Blocks- I taped Contact paper to the window, and my boys used the foam blocks to build. Building this way was a fun change from building on the ground. STEM Tray- Popsicle sticks and plastic shot glasses make a simple and fun STEM tray! Count the Room- Place the counting cards around the room. Walk around the room and count the pictures. Ten Frame Counting- We used loose parts to count each number on the ten frame. Dot Measurement- Use dot markers, or dot stickers to measure each line. Play Dough Letter Fill- Build each letter with rocks or play dough. Roll and Add- Roll dice and add using nuts and bolts. Hammer Smash- Use a hammer to read and smash play dough balls. There is a letter and sight word version. Build a Number- Use popsicle sticks to build each number. Build a Shape- Use Wikki Stix or Play Doh to build each shape. The first few weeks of school are spent building a learning community that is filled with kind, helping, empathetic problem solvers who love to explore, think, wonder and learn together! We have created a learning community that feels safe enough with each other to make mistakes without feeling embarrassed but rather embracing them and using them to learn more. Our community has worked hard to have a growth mindset knowing we will get better at anything with practice if we put our mind to it…no matter what we are tackling! Another thing we needed to do was learn to use our learning materials! I use the “Mystery Box” to introduce new tools! When a tool appears in the mystery box, we 1) Read a story that relates to it, 2) I model how to use the tool and take care if it so that it lasts, and 3) They practice using the new tool to show me they can be safe, respectful and responsible with it. As long as they continue to use them correctly and take care of them they can continue to use them. Here are some of the books I used! Here are some items that have shown up in our Mystery Box that we will use to create, explore and document what we notice with! The first item to appear was the pencil! We learned how to grip a pencil properly, not push too hard and put them away point up so the lead doesn’t break! “The Line” was a perfect book for this! They used their pencils and lines to create their first drawing of themselves in Kindergarten and to write their name. Next came crayons! “How the Crayons Saved the Unicorn” is such a sweet story about friendship and helping and worked so well to introduce crayons! We learned the same thing with crayons as we did with pencils but also need to put them away with the right colors. Next were scissors and glue sponges! We practiced learning to use scissors safely by cutting strips of colored paper. We used the glue sponges to glue the colored pieces to their names. Cutting is a great way to strengthen those fine motor muscles needed for writing! We also found glue sticks in the mystery box! I modeled how to create a collage with scrap paper and scissors and then used glue sticks to glue them on. Then they practiced making their own! They were VERY excited when markers showed up in the box! We learned to put the caps on the backs like hats so the cylinder shaped cap doesn’t roll and get lost! They put them away caps up so we know they all have their caps! We read “Little Green” and created our own lines capturing how the hummingbird flew! Lines are important because we use straight, curved, slanted, loops, zigzags and more to make letters, numbers and pictures. They were shocked to see these appear in the Mystery Box! Permanent Markers!! They learned that to use these they have to put the cap on the end and put their paper on a clipboard so it doesn’t mark up our tables. They also learned that Sharpies are only used to make line drawings. Never for coloring! We read “Ish” so they knew their drawings didn’t have to be perfect! They practiced by creating a self portrait using sharpies. If their self portrait looked “Me-ish” that was just fine! Watercolors were next! We learned how to keep the colors clean. We also learned that a lot of water makes the colors lighter. Too much water and we can barely see them. A little bit of water and the colors are brilliant and bright! We practiced using them by adding some “Oomph” to our plain, white name tags! “Oomph” is an awesome book to help kids add more detail to anything…rather it be illustrations, writing, building, art, observational documentation, etc. We also used watercolors to create a backdrop for our self portraits we made with the sharpies! There is a beautiful book called “Our Kindergarten Family” that goes perfect with this! Permanent markers are a great tool to use with watercolors. They use the sharpie to create the lines then use watercolor to add oomph! We use these together in science a lot to create observational drawings to show what they notice! Here are some other items we now can use that appeared in the Mystery Box! Play dough! Oil Patels! These are great to use along with watercolors! Twistables! Pipettes! All of these tools look like they are primarily used in art, but in our room all of these tools are always available for them to use to show their thinking! You can show your thinking with so much more than paper/pencil/crayons! These tools can help them show their thinking from math, to science, to writing, to story-making….every single one of these can be used! Children use many languages to show what they know. The language of painting, sculpture, drawing, building, creating with recyclables, collage, etc. can be used to both learn from and show what they know about every single subject! It is a beautiful thing to see and I’m excited to see how these kids will use it all! Here are some other things going on in our class! We are being exposed to one letter a day and creating an alphabet for our Sound/Word Wall! The picture go along with our keyword for each letter in our phonics curriculum. We started Learning Stations! We have two playtimes not counting our outdoor play. Our morning play/exploration starts with 15-20 minutes where they are assigned an area of our room (see my last post to see the different areas they would be assigned). After that time is up, they can choose to stay or clean up and make another choice for another 15-20 minutes. Our afternoon play/exploration is about 40 minutes long and is all free choice. Here are some of the literacy and math invitations I set up for them. Who can find all the letters first? Build a tree and see how many letters it can hold! Our new Writing Area! Developing number sense! They have shown a huge interest in patterns and using weight as measurement so I put out some invitations for them to explore these concepts! Bingo is always a favorite! This will help them identify numbers with automaticity! We have started exploring color at our Maker Space and Science Areas! You will find out all about that next week!

The felt sense is an awareness of one's ever-changing sensations, energies and emotions as they occur in the body. This post includes a comprehensive list of sensation words for reference, to help when learning the Felt Sense.

As more and more research comes out about the power of Growth Mindset and more and more people are leaning towards this line of thinking (heck, even my District is getting on board...they talked about it at a training I went to over the summer!), I figured that this would be as good a time as any to teach my students about their own brains and mindset. So I began my first week of school with a few lessons that really set a great tone for my students. To begin, I wanted something tangible and hands-on for my students to experience. So I searched online and found this lesson here. In a nutshell, I folded some paper in a crazy figure (that didn't actually look all crazy...until I tried to make it...go to the blog for exact instructions) and told the students they needed to recreate it. I had them get into groups of 7-8 students, put the figure in the middle and gave them each the exact same piece of paper I used. There were only two rules: They could not touch the folded paper and they could not have a second piece of paper. Most of the students got right to it. As they were working, I walked around with a clipboard and wrote down everything that I was hearing in the groups. At the beginning, I heard things like: This is easy. Look, we just fold it this way and then that. Let me get my scissors and we can all just cut it. Hmmm....I wonder how she did that. Can you just show me what you are doing? Then, as time went on and recreating the folded paper wasn't as easy as they thought, the narrative started to change. I started to hear: Wait, what? This isn't going to work. I can't get this. What did you do? Seriously, she had to use tape. How did she get that part? Let's only do one paper at a time in case we make a mistake. This was also the time when I started to see some kids just sit back and watch. They stopped trying altogether and just let everyone else experiment. I also noticed some kids taking charge completely and not letting others have opinions. Then, towards the end, I heard: This is impossible. I give up. I just can't do this. What on earth did she do? She used magic. After about 10 minutes of working, I called them all together again (no one was able to fold it correctly), I showed the students what they said. It was a bit eye-opening for them to see that some just quit so early on or that they declared the task impossible. Clearly it wasn't, as I had just folded the paper. They just wanted me to tell them the answer. This then lead into a nice discussion about the basic principles of growth mindset. That you have to keep going and trying. That your brain was meant to learn. So I passed out a quiz that I got from Angela Watson of the Cornerstone for Teachers. (she has a whole Growth Mindset pack that is really useful) They took the quiz, which asks questions about whether students think they can learn and grow or if they were just born that way. Then, we watched a video that Angela links from the Khan Academy about the fact that our brains were born to learn. We wrote down many ideas from the video, the biggest being that failure = growing. That REALLY stuck with them. I then asked the students to write down all of the words they could think of that pertained to their idea of what it means that "you were born to learn." The more important words, in their opinion, were to be larger than the less important words. Effectively, they were making a free form word cloud. I then took their picture as if they were screwing in a lightbulb, glued it onto the word cloud they created, and using tissue paper, they formed a "lightbulb" above their hand. All in all, this was a fabulous way to introduce the idea of growth mindset to my students. This entire process took two days to complete, but it was well worth it. The students continue to make connections to that first video from Khan Academy and refer to the idea of "failure = growing" still. I am also finding that there is just a much more positive tone in class because of it. I can't wait to continue on with future lessons. Have you delved into growth mindset?
