The First Center for the Visual Arts – Admission for 18 and under is FREE! My Blessed Life blogged about their visit. Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage – This location offers Homschool Days for reduced rates on specific days. According to My Blessed Life it is also FREE to all on January 8th in remembrance of The Battle of New Orleans. Children under 5 are always FREE. Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area - A living history, 1850s farm! Tickets are very affordable (ages 13+ $5 each, 5-12 $3 and 4 and under FREE). Every Wednesday in April are FREE (with admission) workshops on life skills for children. Other special events are held throughout the year (some with fee increase). Serving Joyfully blogged about their visit. The entire month of July is themed “Portal to the Past”. Cheekwood Art & Gardens – Admission is FREE for homeschoolers in groups of 15 or more if scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance through the Education Department. Tours are available Tues-Friday. If you are going solo, adults are $14 and youth are $7 (only 2 and under are FREE). Current Military ID holders can receive a 50% discount. My Blessed Life blogged about their visit for Homeschool Day. No Homeschool Dates are listed currently, but check their calendar come fall! Mountain Farm Museum and Mingus Mill – part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this location has historical buildings, walking trails and a visitor’s center. Entrance to the park is FREE! Mountain of Grace Homeschooling blogged about their visit. Nashville Zoo – This zoo offers homeschool classes, the cost of classes are $13 for nonmembers and $6 for members. It is stated that siblings and parents can explore the zoo during class, but doesn’t state if a discounted fee is charged for entrance. It may be beneficial to buy a membership in this case, as parking is free with membership, as well as entrance and discounted classes. Membership is $80-120+ depending on the size of your family and how many adults or guests you want. There are several other perks included with membership, aside from FREE parking and admission. You also receive discounts on entrance to over 170 zoos and aquariums nationwide, special events (free or at a huge discount), 10% discount on concessions and retail purchases at the zoo. For me and my 4 children (one under 2) the cost would be $45 plus $5 parking, so 2 visits and the pass has paid for itself. You can hear from Our 4 Kiddos who visited there! Discovery Park of America - My Blessed Life blogs about their visit as well! Adventure Science Center – offers family lab days (homeschool classes), discount group rates and reasonable membership fees with other perks (pays for itself after two visits). You can read about the experience from Kathy’s Cluttered Mind and My Blessed Life. Graceland – They do not offer any homeschooling perks (that I could see), but if you are a fan of Elvis this is a must see! Campfires and Cleats can tell you all about their tour! Titanic Museum – I know this is on my list to see! They offer homeschool rates on select dates with advance reservations. Kathy’s Cluttered Mind blogs about their experience there. Some other places to check out with Homeschool Discounts/Days - Tennessee Aquarium Dollywood National Museum of the US Air Force The Museum of Appalachia Camp Wesley Woods Wonder Works – a group of 8 or more receives a homeschool discount of $9.99 per person (regardless of age), or you can purchase individual tickets online for $2 off the regular price. Virtual Field Trip of Tennessee Have you REALLY looked at the Social Studies Standards for first grade? Wow! I know my students do not have that kind of exposure to our great state. So, I decided to create a Powerpoint Virtual field trip! These slides have pictures from all 3 Grand Divisions and hit the places in TN that first grade students are supposed to be able to find on a map. Where possible, I have linked to websites for further exploration. Tennessee is an amazing state! There is so much more to explore! This will introduce the state to any grade level. Highlights of this trip include: Grand Divisions, Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Mississippi River, Cumberland River, Tennessee River, Great Smoky Mountains, Clingmans Dome, Center Hill Lake, Norris Lake, and Reelfoot Lake. I have also included a map of Tennessee for the students to use and label. You could have them label as they go along or test their map skill afterwards! There are slides at the end to help guide them through the process. We used this presentation in conjunction with a whole TN day. We discussed things invented and manufactured in TN. So, you may be wondering where I’ve been. I guess I just needed a break from blogging. It’s a lot of work, and I choose to do it with no intent for income, so it’s just a hobby really. There are times when I think, “I should blog that!”, but then I don’t. And that’s ok. But I’m here now, and I’d like to tell you about some cool things we’ve done this year. First up is our field trip to Audubon Acres. Audubon Acres is part of Chattanooga’s oldest wildlife sanctuaries. This is an excellent place to get away from it all, (even in the middle of a major Chattanooga suburb.) The occasional train passing by is your only reminder of where you are! The trails here are perfect for a nature walk. I gave my kids some magnifying glasses to help keep their hands busy and not disturbing the wildlife. That really worked! Don’t forget the bug spray! Audubon Acres also ties in to our search for Cherokee locations. Not only is this site rich in Cherokee history, (being the home of Little Owl, brother of Dragging Canoe,) but it’s also part of the Cherokee Arboretum and display signs about the plants here are in English and Cherokee, AND tells about how the Cherokee used each plant. Very fascinating info here for Mom and Dad especially. Inside the visitor’s center there are displays of Native American artifacts and history of the area. We enjoyed having a look around. Check out all the the Chattanooga Audubon Society has to offer. Take a look at their calendar for all their events, or just pick a pretty day and take a picnic!
