When I wasw these fun mid century atomic design dies, I couldn't get Atomic Fireballs out of my mind. So I decided to make something fitting to put them in! This is a Mini Mason Jar that holds candy and has a colorful mid-century feel. The top of the Mini Mason Jar was replaced with the Photo Clip Kit and then I made a fun candy sign for it. I cut three of the boomerang shape from the Atomic Bigz die. I cut it from black chippboard and also from three different colors of shiny adhesive vinyl. I adhered the vinyl to the chipboard and then layered them onto the metal rod from the Photo Clip Kit I added some shapes from the Atomic Elements onto the shapes that are cut from thick cardstock and shiny Adhesive Vinyl. The word CANDY is cut from black Chipboard and yellow Vinyl from the Wonderland Bigz XL die. Not only did I used the atomic shapes for the top, but I cut several other pieces from shiny Adhesive Vinyl in various colors and attached them to the outside of the Mini Mason Jar. This is a super easy, bright, fun project that can serve as a gift, a place setting or a even a center piece for a themed party if you decorate both sides. I filled my jar with Atomic Fireballs that I found on the internet. Aren't these Atomic Elements shapes just fabulous? There are some really gorgeous dies coming out in the Chapter 2 Sizzix release from Tim Holtz. These dies are on preorder currently and will be shipping soon! I have links at the end of this blog post. On this spring Etcetera tag, I wanted to showcase two of my new favorites, Intricate Lace and Crochet. The background is made of the Intricate Lace die. This is perfect for the background on an A4 card, but you can lay it next to itself and cut it twice or more to make a long lace piece as you see above. I added a piece of Crochet lace across the bottom. This Crochet lace comes in two styles, each in two sizes. It is incredibly detailed and I love it so much. this die can also cut longer pieces of lace if it is laid end to end. Once you cut a piece of Intricate Lace twice from some Kraftstock, to make a large enough piece to fit over the Etcetera Tag, and one piece of Crochet to fit along the bottom, you are ready to move on. Use Distress Collage Medium to lay a coat over the tag. Place the Lace and Crochet dies into the Collage Medium and press them down. Make sure the decorative top of the Crochet piece covers the bottom edge of the Intricate Lace piece. It's a lovely scallop and gives the piece a finished look. Then cover the entire piece with another coat of Distress Collage Medium. Once it is completely dry, and you can use a heat tool, trim around the edges and lightly sand them to to give a soft, finished edge all the way around. I used my snips to trim the bits from the tag hole. Paint the entire piece with the color of your choice. The one in the picture here is painted with Antique Linen, but my Cherish sample tag was painted with Picket Fence. Again, once it is completely dry, you want to go over the entire surface lightly and sand away some of the paint so the Kraftstock shows through. Sadly the Tim Holtz sanding block is retired, but I love it and would recommend getting something similar if you can. I recently bought several at a store with a weekday in it's name. :-D Here is a close up that allows you to see the worn, shabby look of the tag. Isn't that Intricate Lace Beautiful? Once I had the tag completed, I turned to the bouquet. For this I used the Chapter 1 Wildflower Stems 1 die set. I chose the greenery piece on the far left and the flower on the far right. I cut multiple greenery pieces from Distress Mixed Media Heavystock. I also cut one full flower and two additional blossoms. The greenery was colored with Shabby Shutters and Bundled Sage Distress Ink and edges with the Shabby Shutters Marker. The Flower was colored with Tattered Rose. As you can see the Wildflower Stems aren't flat. None of them are. That's because I used the Sizzix Paper Sculpting Tool Kit to shape them and give them a little dimension. Also, for the flower, I colored, shaped, and then attached three of the blossoms together. This really gave it even more dimension. To finish it off I colored a small piece of seam binding with Tattered Rose Distress Ink and then used the new Alpha Numeric Label letters to spell out the word Cherish mounted on a small strip of Kraftstock. Hello everyone! Today I'm sharing another project that I created for Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 3 Facebook live. Here's a link to his blog post which features the facebook video and also a link to all the amazing designers. For this project, I decided to create something with bold colours, instead of my usual vintage and distressed look. I'm going to show you how I created this background with Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks. My Sizzix Chapter 3 dies that I used are Bat Crazy and Ghost Town: Also a Tim Holtz Cobweb Thinlits die (662375) which unfortunately has been retired. There is still a corner cobweb die in the Mixed Media Halloween Thinlits set (661588) which is still available to purchase. I created my background with Tim Holtz Alcohol Ink , 8x10 Yupo Paper(non-porous synthetic paper) from Ranger Ink(tac63346), Alcohol Blending Solution (TIM9800), and various alcohol ink colours in the purple, yellow, and orange colours, plus Pitch Black. To create the background, start with your lightest colours first (yellows). I knew I wanted the yellows near the bottom of my tray, behind the houses. I added a few dots of the lightest yellow ink to my alcohol ink applicator and tapped this onto my Yupo paper. Building on that, add in some dots of alcohol blending solution, then some darker yellow. You are going to work into oranges and then the purple tones, and finally adding black to the purples near the top. The colours applied on top will eliminate the bottom colour, instead of blending together and creating muddy colours. I liked the marbled look, so I didn't use a lot of blending solution and I tapped lightly. If you find that you have too much blending solution or ink on your applicator, just tap some off onto a piece of paper towel. Just experiment and have fun! If you would like more info or inspiration, Ranger Ink has some great Alcohol Ink Videos here. My Ghost Town was die cut from Tim's Matte Black Alcohol Ink Cardstock(TAC65487). Love this cardstock, it's a rich, velvety, matte, intense black. How's that for descriptive adjectives! lol! I also used solid pieces of yellow/orange coloured Yupo cardstock behind my houses. These were hand-cut slightly smaller than the black silhouettes, then pop-dotted behind. This way I could overlap them, the middle one built up higher, and the houses and background behind didn't show through the windows. The tree is also in this set. I die-cut a bunch of them in plain black cardstock, crumpled them and adhered to the inside bottom of my tray. A Halloween Quote Chip was added on the bottom. My bats were die-cut from Tim Holtz Metallic Jewels Kraft Stock(th93781), then Black/purple Alcohol ink lightly tapped on top. Love all the different sizes and shapes in this set of bats! Some were adhered to my die-cut cobweb in the corner. The Vignette Tray was painted black, but I also used Woodgrain cardstock on the outer sides. This was Sprayed with Black Soot Distress Spray Stain, then highlighted with purples. I don't like leaving the back of a project unfinished, is that weird? Even if you don't see it, I think it's kind of cool that there's another designed part of your project hidden from view. I took a purple piece of Metallic Kraft stock, cut out three bats. The piece was sanded, quite deep in some places and adhered to the back of my tray. I replaced the bat cutouts with a different colour of Metallic cardstock and sanded my back again. I applied Distress Ink(I think I used Rusty Hinge and Vintage Photo,... I think) on top. Hope this inspires you to get out those Alcohol Inks and create some fabulous Halloween backgrounds for these new Halloween dies! Well, I had immense fun with this little project! I recently bought some of Tim Holtz's Sizzix Village dies, and got to have a play with them. Here's what I've made so far. I bought these five dies in a bundle from Cutting Edge Crafts (UK), and they are available here in the US, among other places. I used all patterned papers from Craft Consortium's Tanya Whelan 'Wild Rose' 12x12 pad. I love how they co-ordinate! My first house was made using the Village Dwelling die, decorated with the Village Cottage die (which creates the shuttered windows, dormer windows and fence), and the Village Rooftops die for the roof shingles. I've seen the Village Cottage die called the Village Bungalow die in some places in the UK. I decorated the house with moss and paper flowers, and made the little wreath above the door with wire stems from the paper flowers, and a bit of moss. Just a note on adhesive. I used an ATG gun on the large house flaps and strips of roof shingles. I used Beacon's 3-in-1 glue for the moss and flowers, and I used Scotch Quick-Dry Adhesive in a Fineline glue bottle on the smaller flaps. I made the house base with die cuts from the Village Dwelling and Village Cottage dies. I cut out multiple fence pieces and glue them together to fit round the base. For my second house, I used the Village Brownstone die, Village Cottage die for the shuttered windows, and the Village Rooftops die. I put a mottled pink vellum behind the windows of all three buildings. My last building I styled into a church. (I thought that this would make a lovely alternative to a wedding card - this with a message on a tag, or something, in a decorated box...) I used the Village Brownstone die, the Village Bell Tower die and the Village Rooftops die. (Just look at those gorgeous little roof tiles!! They cut out in longer-than-needed strips, which you can stagger how you like and trim off the excess at each side of the roof. I didn't have any mini bells (in spite of eating plenty of Lindt Reindeer!), so I used a large 'jingle bell', which I hung up with thin craft wire and glued into the apex of the bell tower roof. Here's the church placed on the base. And just to give you an idea of the size of the houses... cute hey?! I forgot to mention too - I met Tim Holtz back in February, at the Stitches Show in Birmingham, UK! I'd gone to the show to meet up with Karen Burniston (of Sizzix Pop 'n Cuts and Elizabeth Craft Designs Pop It Ups fame). 2017 Topic 12: Hybrid inks Shirley Bee Well hello everyone, Darcy here to introduce another new topic, this time we are are entering the exciting world of hybrid inks. These are relatively new to the market but are becoming increasingly popular as more information and techniques are discovered. Before we start, let's see who won the Topic 11: Books Challenge... [email protected] There are several hybrid brands on the market, this evening we will look at just a few, exploring their properties and what can be achieved. First up we have Nuvo Hybrid inks from Tonic Studios, their hybrid qualities are in the composition of the ink. They are a hard felt pad containing permanent pigment ink. These inks are very fast drying, so not really for creating backgrounds, however very useful for colouring edges. They are not too opaque so can be layered. These inks do not react to water so they are ideal for stamping images that are to be coloured with watercolour paints, water soluble pencils, distress inks etc. The inks do not smudge, meaning you cam also use these inks alongside alcohol pens such as Copics and Promarkers. This is their key feature, an ink that doesn't bleed, and you don't need to heat set either. Of course, you can use cut 'n' dry foam to create soft backgrounds with your blending tool too, this will produce permanent backgrounds, and is a nice idea through stencils. Available in 6 kind of soft country-colours that all work well together, it's a solid versatile ink that gives a nice sharp image, and the black is a really good black too, plus a yummy grey ...everyone loves grey ink these days! So our summary is a good all-rounder ink if you are new to stamping. Here the image has been stamped with black nuvo ink and then coloured with alcohol markers. Lou Sims Here Paula has used one of her favourite techniques of combining water based inks with the nuvo inks stamped over the top. Paula Pascual They can be used on multiple surfaces, not just paper, however surfaces such as vellum, acetate and fabric do need to be heat set. There are 6 colours (black, brown, grey, green, red, purple-ish blue available plus a clear ink that can be used for embossing. Next we have the Palette Hybrid inks from Stewart Superior, these are described as the ultimate all purpose ink pad that comes in fine art colours. The main plus point to these inks, is that they work on all surfaces. This eliminates the confusion over which ink pad to use and also cuts down the expense of separate inks for each surface. These inks also dry quickly on paper but must be heat set on glossy surfaces and fabrics. There is a huge selection of colours( including metallic) plus a clear pad for embossing. These inks too can be used with watercolour, meaning you can colour in all your stamped images. Katie Renz Here the Palette ink has been used on a ceramic plant pot. Bluediamond Another hybrid ink is from My Favourite Things, these too are fast drying, waterproof, can be used with alcohol markers and can be used on many surfaces with some needed to be heat set to become permanent. Look at this wonderful scruffy pooch, stamped in MFT hybrid ink and then coloured with Copics and coloured pencils. Jane This lovely summery card has been created using MFT hybrid inks for the outlines, then the colour was added using Peerless watercolour paints. Kay Miller The above inks all work in the same way, but it is useful to know there are options if you cannot find one specific brand. Now let's have a look at the latest inks from Ranger. Distress Oxides These inks are a completely different type of 'hybrid' (as you know, hybrid means a mix of 2 or more feature'. Oxides are (like all distress products) water reactive, so no surprises there, but this is a pigment AND dye ink fusion. (the original distress inks are dye inks). So the Oxide inks do everything you can do with the original distress plus MORE. When sprayed with water the ink produces an oxidised effect (which kind of means they go chalky-lookig and a bit matte). The oxide inks are perfect to create really interesting backgrounds. The inks kind of puddle up when blobs of water are flicked onto the surface, then as you dry those puddles you get cool defined watermarks as they dry, as well as the chalky-oxide look. It's all depends on how much ink and how much water you apply. The other massive difference with these is that the pigment ink in them is super creamy. You can blend with your fingers or a tool, apply through stencils super easily, you can layer ink over ink (with FULL opacity) so if you hate what you have made you can obliterate and layer so very easily. Pigment inks also are slow-dry, so you can emboss these too, and you will get a sharp image, so great for quotes, and feature image stamping. Finally, as the opacity is massive, you can also use these onto DARK card stock, craft card, black card, coloured card...so you are NOT restricted in oyur starting point. Also we find they are awesome with infusions, and over Fresco chalk paint! Distress Oxide inks are now (Aug 2017) available in 24 colours. There are many many techniques to be had with these, so we recommend you start with 3 colours, light, mid tone and dark, and build from there. There is nothing like this out there, so have a go! Here is Tim Holtz showing the new colours with a couple of short demos at the end of the video. Here Alison has created a wonderful landscape background using these inks. Alison Bomber A stunning tag now showing just how well the oxides work on a dark background. Jan Next a really fresh and clean card using oxides to create a blended background and then topped with white embossing powder. Lin Another great introduction video, this time from Jennifer McGuire, this video was made before the second release of colours, in this video she also shows the difference between Distress inks and Oxides. These cards employ the glazed resist technique, adding the glaze through a stencil first and then adding ink. Cheiron Brandon The super vibrant colours of oxides really make these hearts pop off the front of this card. Jenn In stark contrast these cards were made from a watered down masterboard, the colours are much more delicate and do in fact look just like watercolour paint washes. Very delicate and beautiful. Hello everyone! I'm back today with the remainder of my cards created for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 1 release. I have enjoyed creating with this release so much, as I know all of you will too! I did these cards back in October, November, so hopefully I can remember what I did! First up are two cards created with the Wildflower Stems #1 and Wildflower Stems #2 Thinlits sets. If you loved the previous Wildflower sets, you will love these slightly larger ones. I die-cut my flower shapes for this card out of Tim Holtz Mixed Media cardstock. I then covered my flowers with a light coat of Ranger's Crackle Paste. I let this air dry before colouring. I use a combination of Distress crayons, Distress Markers applied with a Watercolour pen. I apply a small amount of the crayon, then rub it into the crackled paper with a bit of water, usually using my fingers. Love how the crayons get into the cracks, highlighting them. I usually use a darker crayon in the cracks as it shows up a lot more. I think I used the Stormy Sky, Tumbled Glass, Walnut Stain, Peeled Paint, Bundled Sage crayons (sorry I didn't write it down!). Patterned papers from Wallflower, and cardstock are layered, stitched for my card base. A bit of ephemera, vellum ephemera and Clippings Stickers go on next. A small frame die-cut with Stacked Baroque and Distressed Woodgrain cardstock, then treated with Distress Stain and Crackle paste to highlight my flowers is next. The ribbon is stained with Distress Spray Stain. These Wildflower Stems were die-cut from Mixed Media cardstock coloured with Distress Oxides. I believe I used Dried Marigold, Squeezed Lemonade, and Antique Linen. The background paper is also from Wallflower(TH93110) and cardstock. My sentiment is die-cut with Gold Metallic Kraft Cardstock and the Thin Sentiment Words Thinlits(661807) set, which sorry, I didn't realize has been retired. The Thin Alphanumeric Set is still available and a great 3/8" 121 pc set, same font! Using the Sizzix Sticky Grid sheets when lining up your letters, is a must have for me! I added a painted Butterfly Adornment(TH93689) and stained ribbon, along with stained Tim Holtz Mummy Cloth. I'm so attracted to these larger negative space (not sure if that's what you call them!) dies. I've always admired those paper cut artists, how I wish I had the patience and talent like them; so I guess this is the next best thing! When I have them in my hand, I'm always trying to think of different ways to use them. I had created a card a long time ago using this layout, so I thought why not with this Organic Thinlits die. This die does not have an outer edge, so you determine how big you want your border. I die-cut this out of a dark grey cardstock and cut out my two triangles on each end. Because this is a rectangle shape, you won't be needing part of the middle section. I just measured one side and marked the opposite side the exact same measurement. With my craft knife, I just cut across. This 6 x 6 card worked well for the size of triangles I ended up with (about 1/4" border). I just cut a strip of matching cardstock to adhere across the top, finishing off the triangles before adhering to my Wallflower patterned paper/cardstock mat. I also stamped and die-cut foliage from the Flower Jar Thinlits with matching stamps (CMS297). The butterflies and bee are from Entomology stamp set(CMS328) and Entomology Framelits set. These were lightly tinted with Distress Markers. Add in a Small Talk Occasions(TH93245)sticker and some dyed ribbon and Bouquet Findings (TH93569) to complete your card. This time, I used the Organic die in my background. I die-cut it with Distress Mixed Media Cardstock cut to measure the width and height of my Etcetera 8 x 4 1/2" tag. With no outer edge on this die, I can make it the exact size I want. I placed the die where I wanted the pattern to sit on my tag. Adhere this to your tag with Distress Collage Medium. I then applied Ranger's Crackle Texture Paste all over, trying not to apply too heavy so you don't lose the detail and dimension of the die-cut. In some of the recessed areas I wiped away a bit where I had too much and along the edge, I used more so the pattern blends into the edge. Once dried, use Distress Crayons to colour. I used Peeled Paint, Walnut Stain, Forest Moss and Antique Linen. For my small frame, I die-cut with Stitched Rectangles and Distress Woodgrain Cardstock that was stained with Distress Stain Spray. I also applied Crackle Texture Paste to random parts of the frame, then coloured with Distress Crayons. A piece of Ephemera behind the frame completes it. I also die-cut a Flourish with the 3-D Flourish Impresslits Embossing folder in Mixed Media Cardstock, painted with Distress Paint. My pink coloured trim was die-cut with the 3D Mini Provincial Impresslits Embossing Folder. To finish off my tag, I coloured the Bouquet Flowers (TH93569), ribbon, and Mummy Cloth with Distress Spray stains, a piece of Fringe(93688) and adhered Clippings Stickers(TH93583) and a Botanical Paperie Butterfly(TH93554). I decorated the house with moss and paper flowers, and made the little wreath above the door with wire stems from the paper flowers, and a bit of moss. Just a note on adhesive. I used an ATG gun on the large house flaps and strips of roof shingles. I used Beacon's 3-in-1 glue for the moss and flowers, and I used Scotch Quick-Dry Adhesive in a Fineline glue bottle on the smaller flaps. I made the house base with die cuts from the Village Dwelling and Village Cottage dies. I cut out multiple fence pieces and glue them together to fit round the base. For my second house, I used the Village Brownstone die, Village Cottage die for the shuttered windows, and the Village Rooftops die. I put a mottled pink vellum behind the windows of all three buildings. My last building I styled into a church. (I thought that this would make a lovely alternative to a wedding card - this with a message on a tag, or something, in a decorated box...) I used the Village Brownstone die, the Village Bell Tower die and the Village Rooftops die. (Just look at those gorgeous little roof tiles!! They cut out in longer-than-needed strips, which you can stagger how you like and trim off the excess at each side of the roof. I didn't have any mini bells (in spite of eating plenty of Lindt Reindeer!), so I used a large 'jingle bell', which I hung up with thin craft wire and glued into the apex of the bell tower roof. Here's the church placed on the base. And just to give you an idea of the size of the houses... cute hey?!
