Guerel. Printed in 1898 by Verneau Charles. Condition A Framed. A moi l'avenir !». In 1881 Rodolphe Salis (1851-1887) from Châtellerault who had come to Paris on order to seek fortune, opened an artistic and literary cabaret on the Butte de Montmartre. He began his career painting religious subjects and living modestly before abandoning his brushes and deciding to open a new sort of place where artistic expression and the sale of drink could be associated « Je serai gentilhomme cabaretier, se dit Salis. A moi l'avenir !». The painters, sculptors and young bohemian artists were quickly joined by the aristocracy and the upper middle class to assist at the performances in the Chat Noir where Salis became the emblematic figure of the establishment. Following Rodolphe Salis's death there were three auctions in Paris, in April 1897, May 1898 and March 1904 and the cabaret material was then sold. However there is no trace of the Provincial sales in the Tower of Naintré in the Vienne district that Salis had bought in 1892, proclaiming himself « Baron de Nainctré en Poictou et Seigneur de Chatnoirville en Vexin », and where he had decorated the interior "with the taste and sense of originality that had made the Chat Noir a real museum".
