Nate's 4 yr old Wall-E Themed Birthday Party For my son's 4 yr old birthday, it had to be Wall-E themed! A few weeks earlier we did our Wall-E themed birthday shoot to go with his party and these photos were great to hang on a ribbon on the wall for everyone to see. Wall-E birthday things are very hard to find. They are not in stores but you can find some things online. Thanks to Pinterest, I was able to make most of these decorations. So, if you are planning a Wall-E party for your little one, here's some ideas... You can find rolls of banner paper at your local craft store. The yellow and turquoise pots were in the $1 bin at Walmart and made great decorations that the kids could take home with them. These photos were taken a couple of weeks before for his 4 yr old shoot. We incorporated his Wall-e toys and a shirt we had made at a beach vendor in Myrtle Beach as well as a small cake with the number 4 candle on it. T-shirt by: Blown Away Airbrush , Broadway at the Beach, Myrtle Beach, SC Cookies by: Phil's Sweet Hope Cookie Shoppe White Lunch Bags from Walmart, Candy Bar Signs by Amber S. Wallace Cupcakes by my friend, Naomi Hager. Cupcake Toppers from Ebay. Wall-E masks For the masks, I printed these out on cardstock and cut them out and then bough a packet of sticks in the Walmart craft section for $1.99 and then taped them to the backside of the mask to use for great photos! Yellow bucket in the $1 bin at Target. Bithday card by my 7 yr old neice, Maddy. Robot Wall-E from Santa Clause, and I think he got it from Toys R Us, but I'm pretty sure you can find them on Ebay now. Copyright Amber S. If you're kids are fans of Thomas & Friends, they'll be glad to know that there's a new Thomas & Friends steaming into cinemas soon. Thomas & Friends: The Great Race is a new feature length
I know its been years (so sad) since I last wrote in my blog but I decided that this would be the year I stick to it. (We'll see how long it lasts, lol). I couldn't decide where to start. Four years is a long time to catch up on. What should I post first. After many a thought I came to the conclusion I should start with parties. Everyone loves a party. I've had 4 years of birthday parties to talk about. I've grown to love the stress and creativeness of planning a party on a shoe string budget. Don't get me wrong I'd love to spend the money my imagination would prefer, but lets face it we just can't. I mean I think anyone can have a beautiful party with a limitless budget. But its the real challenge of having a memorable blast on next to nothing... So my quest begins The Goob's first birthday party was your normal minimal decorated backyard party with piñata. We had just moved back to NY from NC a few weeks prior. Steve almost out of the Marines. We were living at my in-laws. So it was difficult to pull anything together. His second birthday was better. It was my first real children's party to plan. I had just taken wilton course 1 in cake decorating. And Goobie loved trains. I had my theme. I remind you this was before I found my beloved pinterest. So I had no help. I made train ticket invitations on publisher. I printed them out on a heavy cardstock. Next came the crazy idea, cardboard train. My husband looked at me like I had lost my mind. But I convinced him of the sheer awesomeness of it. I dove for 2 weeks straight in the cardboard dumpster behind the local appliance store to find the right size boxes. Then I proceeded to cut, tape, and glue myself a train. Looking back I wish I had painted it instead of using just electrical tape. I did make it so the kids could crawl right threw the front of the train. The smoke was just some white party balloons. I set up a few tables in the backyard under a tent. I had streamers and balloons. I did red table cloths and put blue painters tape tracks down the middle of the table. I had bandanas and red and blue lanterns for my centerpieces. I made the confetti with a hole punch. I bought bandanas and train hats for all the kids. As for the cake... it was my first attempt at any cake besides a 13x9 never leave pan cake really. I wanted a mountain with a train. So I made a mountain with a tunnel with a wooden Thomas coming threw. I made a few paper trees for the top. It seems kind of simple now but it amazed me at the time. I did the whole thing in buttercream (I had yet to venture into the world of fondant). I also made cupcakes. I use the same train from the invitations and a few different punches to make the cupcake toppers. All and all everyone had a good time, especially the kids. Plus it started my love of all things party :)

Recently, students at Thomas were lucky enough to be able to host illustrator/author Steve Harpster. Steve is a local illustrator who does free (can you believe that?!?) school visits in Ohio and free electronic visits around the world. He has illustrated over 100 books including many how to draw books. Steve sent several of his books in advance and my students couldn't wait to see him. Steve's presentation was primarily a drawing lesson. He drew many characters from his books. Students (who brought paper and pencil) drew right along with him. Watching 125 students all drawing something at once was priceless. It was the art version of watching a crowd at a tennis match. Everyone would look up at the screen to see the next step in the drawing. Then they would all look down to work on their own paper. Then the would look up, then down, then up, then down, then up, then down. I think you get the point. Pure fascination. Steve drew on his tablet which was projected on the wall. It was incredibly easy for all students to follow along. My students were extremely engaged with the presentation and were incredibly excited and motivated about how good their drawings were. All of the drawings are based around letters or numbers, so it's a totally different style than what they typically see in drawing books. I saw more successful drawings with Steve's presentation and books than I've ever seen from any other drawing book. If you're interested in having Steve Harpster visit your school, I would highly recommend it. More information about his school visits (along with drawing lessons, printables, and other materials) are on his website.

As of today, my Jonas is four years old. We had been planning on having an all-out party for him since last year he didn't get one due to our big move (we bought a house and moved in four days before his third birthday). We had thought he would have a Batman theme and were looking for someone to show up dressed as Batman, tights and all... But right before I started gathering party supplies he told me he wanted an Aquabats party. I said OK and that I wasn't sure if there were Aquabats party supplies, but we'd figure something out. Turns out there are Aquabats party supplies but only online at one web site. Before ordering I made sure he actually wanted an Aquabats party, and he told me he wanted "an Aquabats WATER BALLOON birthday!" So that's what we did... Invitation front Invitation back So the Aquabats would be an actual rock band who also happen to be super heroes. I was a fan in the 90's but sadly never got to see a live show where they dress in their super hero costumes and battle evil monsters while playing music all live on stage. They now have a TV show for kids on The Hub and there's a season on Netfilx. Rock band + super heroes = awesome in Jonas' book. For Jonas' cake, I made it chocolate with buttercream icing and drew the Aquabat logo guy on it. I also made a bunch of funfetti cupcakes with cookie burgers on them (thanks Pintrest!) in honor of one of Jonas' favorite segments on an episode of the show: Burger Rain. (You can watch a video of Burger Rain at the end of this post.) I altered some decorations I had from Charzie's Yo Gabba Gabba party (I'll have to post on that later) to make them Aquabats-appropriate. And we had fruit, veggies, chicken nuggets, cheese & crackers to snack on. Decorations & snacks I had ordered some official goodie boxes & fillers for our kid guests, and then Jonas helped me choose some extra stuff to stick in there, too. Guest loot We started out just hanging out and snacking. I had a water table set up for the two-and-under crowd. Then we really kicked things off with a water balloon toss. Water balloon toss Next, the kids got to take turns chucking water balloons at Snakey. Snakey is actually a monster from the show. I painted him on cardboard and covered it with contact paper. After they all had a couple turns, we had them line up and attack together. They thought it was awesome. The boys chucking water balloons at Snakey But even more awesome than that was when they got to use a water balloon slingshot to battle the Floating Eye of Death (another actual monster from the show, which I also painted & contact-papered). I rigged this bad guy up on the kids' fort. I tell you what, boys ages 3-6 were all about that slingshot. This guy had some fantastic aim. After defeating Snakey and the Floating Eye of Death, we had a water balloon and water gun free-for-all. Then it was cake time. Cake time Jonas blew the candle out at the wrong time and freaked out. I re-lit it, he blew it out at the end of Happy Birthday and all was well. We had cake and ice cream (vanilla or "monster" which had M&Ms and cookie dough in it) and then opened presents. Jonas got quite the birthday loot! The big surprise was our big gift at the end... Jonas discovering his drums Yes, we're crazy and bought our four-year-old drums, real drums, for his birthday. Kid's got rhythm. And of course, Jonas being Jonas, had to go and do this: This picture sums up Jonas Now watch yourself some Burger Rain!
