12 reading comprehension strategies. Why, when, and how to use each strategy to become proficient readers. We use these strategies
1. Review- ALL year long! We all know that kids need practice! There are so many ways to review content year round: Morning Work Center Time Guided Reading or Small Groups Spiral Review I now teach virtual school, so I include one problem a day as a warm up every math class. Now, I plan on spending a bit more time incorporating my version of morning work or spiral review at the start of my live lessons everyday. My students can go into separate "breakout" rooms to work independently. I can see what they are doing and pull examples that I want to be sure to review as a whole class after their first few minutes of warm up work. These problems will include everything we've learned so far in 3-5 questions each day. 2. Practice Test Taking Strategies from the the Start! In addition to reviewing the content, we all know that our kiddos need to practice test taking strategies too! I like to show my students what I expect and test taking strategies that I want them to use from the beginning of the year. I really like this RELAX strategy! (Grab the free poster by clicking on the picture.) 3. Build Reading Stamina! Reading stamina is a HUGE part of test taking. My students are expected to sit for two 80 minutes reading testing sessions! That's a looooong time. I like to start building up my kiddos reading stamina early in the year. We start with doing this during independent reading time. I start with 20 minutes in the beginning of the year and work our way up to 1 hour (when time permits) by testing time (in March/April). I talk about how it's important that we build our reading muscles to be able to stay focused thinking and reading for longer and longer amounts of time, so that by the end of year we'll be spending lots of time reading what we love! We also CELEBRATE our reading stamina achievements with fun brain breaks and dances. Are you still looking for even more great Reading Test Prep? I've got a great resource for you- and it's FREE! Here is the banner Steph helped me sew together for the kids' school. Eleanor is making her first holy communion this month, and each member of her class painted a sacrament-related design onto a 1' square of fabric. The teacher asked me to assemble all 30 squares into a banner. Eleanor's square is the second from the right on the top row. It's a funky-looking yellow bird representing the Holy Spirit, with multicoloured embellishments and glitter. Here it is enlarged. Eleanor always uses colour lavishly in her paintings. Years ago all her class coloured in angels at Christmas time. Most of the children used tasteful combinations of white, silver and gold to colour their angels. Eleanor coloured hers with stripes using every pen in the set; hers was a groovy rainbow hippy angel. At the end of the school year, the banner will be cut up and each child will take their artwork home. I wonder if I'll be asked to hem all 30 squares? Probably.

Third Graders need a lot of practice to master the phonics skills they need as they fine tune their independent reading skills. Games are a great way for them to practice these phonics skills. These games will quickly become your students' favorite center activity! The 5 games in this unit can be used in small groups (2-4 students) or in centers. The question cards can be used with your whole class as you're introducing the phonics skill or to review throughout the year. These five phonics games can be used with any reading program. The skills follow the scope and sequence of the Journeys Reading Series, but you do not need to be using that program in order to use these games. Included for each game: Teacher information, how to prepare the materials and summary of how to play the game. All materials that need to be copied. 80 question task cards. The cards have 4 sets of 20 cards. Each set focuses on a different type of task. Example: fill in the missing vowels, unscramble words, fill in the blank. This makes it super easy to differentiate for the students in your class. Kid-friendly game directions. Student response sheet to record answers for question cards. The response sheets are the perfect way to keep students accountable. Not only are they saying an answer out loud during the game, they must write the answer on the response sheet. You will be able to see exactly what they practiced during the game. Answer Key. The game directions instruct the student to the right of the player to check the answer. Checking the answer right away helps students master the phonics skills. Unit 2 Skills Game 6: Dino Dash- VCV pattern with long and short vowel words Game 7: Time to Saddle Up- Words with scr, spr, str, and thr Game 8: Cats 'n' Dogs- Words with silent letters kn and wr Game 9: Showers All Around- Words with diphthongs ow and ou Game 10: Who Found the Gold?- Words with /aw/ (au, aw, al, and o) Don't forget to check out the preview to see everything that is included in this resource.
