8 x 11 Pen, Ink & a little Watercolor In Vermont I always see so many things I want to draw. This is at my nephew Gregory's house. Their clothes line. Megan his wife is so sweet and hospitable and their children are both fabulous. It's such a pleasure to go visit every one there. The time goes by too fast unfortunately. She share with me that she could very well put all those clothes in the dryer but she forces herself to put them on the line outside when she can. Why you ask ? Her life is very busy so it gives her a chance to slow down, it is a chore you cannot do fast. I thought it was such a wise action I had to make a sketch of it !
Last friday I had a bit of time in between meetings so I bought myself a nice iced coffee and sat at SHOTS cafe to sketch. This little hip and trendy street is filled now with colourful cafes and restaurants, injecting new life into this historic area. As I was finishing up, a young man […]

In the March issue of Martha Stewart Living there is a visually endearing article about songbirds in the garden. Illustrated by Stan Fellows, the imagery depicts some of the northeast's most prized feathered singers in a collage of dreamy watercolours. Watercolours have always entranced me, especially those that take a modern or updated approach to the age-old painting technique. I think it's the aforementioned dreamy quality that attracts me, the creation of form and shadow using as few lines as possible. Stan Fellows has been an illustrator for 35 years and works primarily in watercolour. His work has appeared in numerous prestigious publications such as National Geographic, Harper's, The Atlantic and Field & Stream. He works monthly for the Wall Street Journal's wine column as well. Stan was kind enough to let me showcase some of his work, shown below. The article from the March issue of MSL is filled with watercolour imagery of birds. Stan, who is based in Minnesota, sells much of his artwork through the Campbell Steele Art Gallery and you can see several examples of his paintings on his blog. He also gives private lessons to individuals and small groups in the Iowa City area. I love Stan's use of perspective, light and composition. His work always seems to have a sense of movement. A sample from Stan's sketchbook reveals some of his notes. The unfinished spaces lend a lot of interest to the page. Again, a beautiful use of light and colour. The space surrounding the cutting board is only inferred but you get the depiction of morning sunlight streaming through a kitchen window with just a few simple brush strokes and the use of colour. The cleavers in Stan's paintings never seem to get finished! One of Stan's wine paintings, which are seen regularly in the Wall Street Journal.
Fun sketching at the Hotel Phillips, and then at the old KC Parks and Rec building, re-purposed into a theatre! They were wise enough to retain the ruins and build the theatre around it--that's it on the right. The nice thing about sketching is that you can edit out what you want to...like the handicap parking signs and that screaming pink... Work in progress...you can see I added color to the Phillips lobby sketches later--I didn't have much time there, because the Jeep was parked at a meter. And on the way home, a super quick sketch with a gorgeous Prismacolor Ebony Jet Black Extra Smooth sketching pencil as we drove across the I-35 bridge as slowly as Joseph dared!
Finally Packing for Urban Sketchers Symposium, Barcelona! Here's my sketch kit. It was hard, but I left one pan empty in my travel kit. Who knows, I just might discover a new color I just cannot live without... after all, I never did use Payne's grey until I saw so many Urban sketchers use it so beautifully. Now it's almost the first color that makes it into my palette.
To help everyone feel connected in a time of self-isolation, a group of urban sketchers in Italy started the hashtag #uskathome (short for “urban sketchers at home”) and encouraged everyone...
