This file folder game (FFG) will be as review and the students can take home. Stephen if found in Acts 5-6 Introduction: Scripture is Acts 6:8-8:4. We have studied about Jesus dying on the cross and after He rose from the dead, He talked with His disciples and told them to go out and make disciples from all nations. Jesus said to baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teach them to do all the things I have taught you. Remember that I will always be with you. (Mark 16:15) Lesson: Peter and John and Stephen were some of the people who did what Jesus commanded. They went about healing people and preaching about Jesus. They were beaten and made fun of. When they were brought to the chief priests and asked why they kept doing what they were told not to do, they answered that “We obey God instead of men!” They taught DAILY in the temple and in every house, preaching and teaching about Jesus being the Savior. The word of God spread. Today we will be talking about Stephen and how his works for Jesus and his death introduces us to Saul, who we know as Paul. Read today’s Bible verse: "Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people." Some of the Jewish leaders were arguing with Stephen about what he taught. They just couldn’t stop him from preaching, so they secretly told men to say that they had heard Stephen say offensive words against God. The Jewish leaders got the people all worked up and Stephen was brought to the Jewish council. They had false witnesses come in and tell lies. Sounds like how Jesus was brought in and crucified, doesn’t it? Everyone sitting at council thought Stephen had a face of an angel. The high priest asked if this was true, and Stephen began by telling the council about Moses and about how God delivered the Israelites. He talked about Abraham. He talked about Joseph and his father Jacob and how they were saved from the famine by God. He talked about David. Use Picture Visuals here: Moses, Abraham, Joseph and David) This is the short version, I use the long version to review Old Testament men. Insert the info at the end of this lesson for those men here. Pictures and lesson are at the end. He told the council they were stubborn, because all those people knew about God, but they wanted to do what they felt like instead of what God says to do. The men shouted out and plugged their ears! They ran at Stephen and took him out of the city to stone him. The men that were witnesses in the temple were by law supposed to throw the first stones. Those witnesses laid their coats at the feet of Saul. The clothes they laid at Saul’s feet would have been the outer coat that would get in the way when they heaved the rocks at Stephen. As the people were stoning him, Stephen called to Jesus to “receive my spirit”. Stephen was ready to go to heaven with Jesus and he asked Jesus to forgive them for what they were doing to him. This is the first time the Bible talks about Saul, who we are going to study. We know him as Paul. This was the persecution of the Christians. They were killed for telling others about Jesus. People left Jerusalem and went to other countries teaching about Jesus. As we read Acts 8:3-4, we see that Saul was very destructive for the church. he went into people's homes and dragged men & women to prison. He approved of Stephen getting stoned to death. And those who were Christians, went everywhere preaching the word. Take Stones (I just picked these out of the decorative rock bed at the building, but they can be purchased at Dollar Tree) Let them paint or write on the stone the word “Forgive”. Talk about how Stephen forgave the men who hurt him and even asked God to forgive them. This original idea was found here. This is the front cover and inside of the FFG. The cards for each Bible man Stephen talked about are stored in the pocket on the front cover. I make my pockets for the pieces sideways, because my FFG's are stored like files, and they are carried by the kids like files, so parts do not fall out as easily. But, it's your choice how you glue it on your folder. This is a twist on a bulletin board I saw on Pinterest, but I like the FFG for review better. Here is the link to print it. If you'd rather just a worksheet, you can print it here. Click here to download the worksheet. You can find all the Acts worksheets here. Click here to download the updated visuals. The visuals for Acts 6 & 7 are all included. All are not shown. Click here to download the pictures to color. (These are the same as the visuals but are black & white.) Notes for Stephen's talk about Bible people: The high priest asked if the people were telling the truth with their accusations and Stephen began by telling the council about Old Testament Bible people: A. God told Abraham to go to a new land. Which he did. God promised him a son. God gave him Isaac. He would be the father of all nations. His descendants would be like the stars in the sky! Which they are! B. Then, Isaac had Jacob. And Jacob had 12 sons. We know them as the 12 tribes of Israel. Do you remember Joseph? His brothers were so jealous because Jacob gave Joseph a coat of many colors. They sold him and Joseph was taken to Egypt. God gave him "favor and wisdom". Pharaoh, the King of Egypt, made him Governor over Egypt. So he was given a lot of power in Egypt. God was watching over him! Joseph sent for his father, Jacob, during a famine, and they were able to be together again! All these men are found in the book of Genesis. C. And then Stephen talked about Moses. He is in Exodus and it's over 400 years later. (They think about 430.) God had Moses and his brother Aaron take the Israelites out of Egypt. After the 10 plagues, they left Egypt. God also gave them the 10 commandments. We will have a lesson about Moses later. D. Stephen then talks about David. He fought the giant Goliath. He was also a king for 40 years. David's son, Solomon who was the wisest man that ever lived, and was king after David's reign. E. Stephen finishes up with Jesus. He calls Jesus 'The Just One'. You can print the 12 Sons of Jacob here. You can print the other posters here. Click here to download the lesson. The lesson for Naaman will end our study on Elijah and Elisha. We will finish the lapbooks and they can take them home. There is a door hanger with a box pocket. I printed the door hanger on blue cardstock, and Naaman and the front pocket on white cardstock. The kids glued a large craft stick inside of Naaman so he could be moved in the pocket. See the photo below for more! Review: We have been studying Elisha. He was a prophet after Elijah was taken to heaven in the flaming chariot. The widow had told Elisha that she didn't have any money and the creditors were going to take her sons. Elisha told the widow (a woman whose husband has died) to gather up all the pots from everyone she could. After they had the pots collected, they closed the doors and poured oil from one bottle into every jar they had borrowed! That was a miracle! Then, there was a couple that fed Elisha and had a bedroom built for Elisha when he stayed at their home. Gehazi was a servant that was traveling with Elisha. They were talking and Gehazi told Elisha that the couple did not have any children. Elisha told the woman that she would have a son the next year, which she did. The son was working in the fields one day and had a headache. He died but Elisha came and stretched himself on the boy and he was alive again! Lesson is found in 2 Kings 5: There was a commander in the army of the king of Syria. His name was Naaman, and he was considered great and honorable, but he had leprosy. (explain) The Syrians had gone out on raids and brought back a girl from Israel. She was a servant helping Naaman’s wife. The captive servant told Naaman's wife “It’s too bad that the prophet that lives in Samaria isn’t here because he could cure Naaman.” Naaman told the king of Syria what the servant had told his wife about Elisha the prophet. The king of Syria sent a letter to the king of Israel, along with gold & silver and 10 changes of clothing. The letter stated that he, the king of Syria, was writing to inform the King of Israel that He has sent his servant and commander of his army, Naaman, to him so that he could cure Naaman of his leprosy. When the king of Israel received the letter, he tore his clothes in frustration and said Am I God? To kill or make someone live? Am I supposed to cure this man of his leprosy? Why does this king of Syria have a quarrel with me? Elisha heard that the king had ripped his clothes and asked the king to let Naaman come visit with him. Elisha would let Naaman know that there was a prophet of God in Israel. Naaman went in his horse and chariot and stood at the door of Elisha’s house. Elisha sent a messenger to tell Naaman to go wash in the Jordan River seven times and he would be healed. But Naaman was furious! He said to himself “Well, surely, he can come to me himself and wave his hand over me and cure me! And, why that river? There are other rivers! Why can't I wash in one of the other better waters?” He left in a rage and his servants went to Naaman and asked him, “If Elisha the prophet told you to do something great, wouldn’t you do it?" The servant told Naaman that Elisha told him to ‘Wash and be clean.’” Naaman went down in the Jordan River, just like Elisha told him to. He dipped himself seven times and he was healed! The skin from the leprosy was just like a child's! Naaman went to thank Elisha and said he would only worship the God of Israel, the true God, and not idols anymore. He begged Elisha to take gifts for healing him, but Elisha didn’t want any gifts. Ga-hey-zee) Elisha’s servant Gehazi followed after Naaman and told him that Elisha changed his mind about the reward. Naaman gladly gave him silver and clothing. Gehazi went back and hid the items from Naaman in his house and went to see Elisha. Elisha asked, “Where have you been?” Gehazi told Elisha “I didn’t go anywhere.” Elisha told him that he knew Gehazi went to get money and clothing from Naaman and because he lied, Gehazi would be struck with the leprosy disease of Naaman. When Gehazi left, he was snow white full of leprosy. (Notes: Elisha died of an illness in 2 Kings13:14 & 20) I made these door hangers before class so they were ready for the kids to use. They cut out Naaman, folded him and glued him together with a large craft stick on the bottom inside. Then, they could put him up through the bottom of the pocket and make the leprous side of him go up and down seven times, then turn him around to be clean. Click here to print it. VERSES: Luke 12:16-21 MEMORY VERSE: Luke 12:21 "So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." BOOK TO REMEMBER: James. Write "James" on small slips of paper for the students to take home and memorize another book of the New Testament. Practice saying all the books of the New Testament together as a class or sing the song, The Books Of The New Testament, found under March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #3 as review. PRAYER: Pray that we will always put God first in our lives and place everything else below Him. SPECIAL SONG: Jesus Taught By Parable And Miracle (see March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #4 on this blog. Click on orange circle to hear tune.) VISUAL AID: Make a large Activity like the one below under Activity. LESSON POINTS: As Jesus daily walked around Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem, there were always a crowd of people who gathered around Him. Perhaps they were waiting for Him to perform a miracle and they wanted to see Him make a lame person walk, maybe they had heard about Jesus and were curious to see what He looked like, or maybe they wanted to hear what He had to say. Whatever their reasons, the people followed Jesus as He visited their towns. Sometimes there were just a few people following, but many times, there were great crowds of people. Because microphones and speakers had not been invented yet, the people had to be quiet and listen closely and remember what Jesus had said because there were no tape recorders or smart phones to record what He was saying. No, the people--all the people--listened quietly to Jesus as He spoke. When Jesus preached to the people, sometimes He said exactly what the people should do. He commanded them like He did when He taught on the Sermon on the Mount. Sometimes He would heal someone who everyone in the town knew to get their attention, then He would teach the people. Sometimes He told the people stories or parables to paint a picture in the people's minds, so they could remember the lesson and also understand the lesson. One thing remained true: Jesus always taught by His example. He lived what He taught. In the lesson today, Jesus taught a parable about a very rich man who forgot something. Jesus taught the people lessons by talking about something they knew, like farming for example, then he would apply the lesson to something spiritual. He told the story about a man who farmed land and his land grew a great amount of fruit. We don't know what kind of fruit it was, but there was a lot of it and the rich man put it in barns. God had blessed the man's land so much that the man began thinking about what he would do with all the fruit. He thought to himself, "What will I do? I have so much fruit that I don't have enough room for it all. I know! I will tear down all of my barns and I will build much larger barns and then I will put all of my fruit inside. I will say to myself--I have much fruit stored up for many years, so I will eat, drink, and be merry." BUT...the rich man forgot something! He forgot God and he forgot that he was going to die. God said to the rich man, "You fool! Tonight your soul is required of you! Then who will own all those things that you have stored up?" At the end of the parable, Jesus said, "Someone who stores up treasures on this earth and is not rich towards God is just like that rich fool." Jesus did not want us to be like that rich man who forgot God. He wanted us to always put God first in our lives, then God would always give us everything we need. (Matthew 6:12). What does that mean, "Put God first?" That's right! It means to always do spiritual things before we do the earthly things. First, we go to Bible class, then we can play soccer or go to the mountains. It means that whatever we do in life--get a job, play sports, etc.--we need to put God above those things. "Older Student" Tips: Discuss what a 'fool' is. Someone who is not smart. Talk about how smart Jesus was to tell parables about the things that the people knew: farming, cleaning house, finding a treasure, losing a sheep, etc. The people He taught could understand what the meaning was to His lessons. Have everyone open their Bibles to Luke 12:16-19 and count how many times the rich man said the words, "I" or "my". Then, count how many times he said anything about helping others or giving back to God. ACTIVITY: Parable of the Rich Fool Materials needed: 6" x 9" red construction paper, 5" x 12" light brown construction paper, 4.5" x 8" dark brown construction paper, 3" x 3" dark brown construction paper, glue, scissors, marker, crayons. Hand out light brown paper. This is the roof. Cut edges off two short sides of light brown paper to resemble a roof. Hand out red paper. This is the barn. Glue top edge of red barn. Place the bottom of the roof on top of the barn. Hand out dark brown paper. This is the barn door. Cut in half. Fold one edge of each dark brown square. Glue only the small folded edge. Place glued edges of two barn doors away from each other on top of the red barn. The doors should open. Hand out small dark brown paper. This is the hayloft. Cut in half. Fold one edge of each small dark brown square. Glue only the small folded edge. Place glued edges of two hayloft doors away from each other on top of the roof. The doors should open. Write "The Rich Fool" and "Luke 12:16-21" on top of the roof. Open large barn doors. Inside the large barn doors on the red barn, write "The rich fool said, 'I will build greater barns...I will eat, drink, and be merry.' But..." Open small brown doors of the hayloft. Write "...but he forgot God." On both sides of each of the barn doors, make a large "X". On the small hayloft doors, make black or brown lines to resemble wood. On the roof, make lines to resemble a roof. Before leaving class, have the students read what it says inside all doors.

God invites us to reap the benefits of salvation, and all we have to do is accept that free gift. Sometimes we make excuses or push Him aside, as the people in the parable did. But God wants everyone to hear the good news of Jesus, and accepts all who come to Him in faith.

My oldest son, Jake, taught Family Home Evening a couple of weeks ago. It all started with a simple experiment. I told Jake that if I poured oil on water it would float on top of the water. Then we went for the food coloring. Then it turned into a discussion, mostly his idea, that ended up being our lesson for FHE. He presented it all by himself. Here is how it went..... The water in the jar represents THE WORLD (meaning the things of this world, pride, basically the things that are not of the Lord). The Oil in the jar represents US. 1 John 2: 15-17: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. Romans 12:1-2: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. *What does "of the world" mean? *What can we do to "present [our] bodies a living sacrifice" to the Lord?" The food coloring (which was supposed to be red...but we were out) represents THE SINS OF THE WORLD. The oil repels the coloring and it passes straight through in droplets and then colors the water. The kids LOVED that part! It is pretty fun to watch! (Stir all together) Sometimes we sin and we become like the "world". Then we need to repent. (while everything starts to seperate again we read the scriptures below) John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his eonly begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting ilife. Isaiah 1:18: Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. (When it is all settled) Doctrine & Covenants 63:47: He that is faithful and endureth shall overcome the world. (Shine a Flashlight behind the jar. The lights won't cut through the bottom part but really lights up the oil.) Matthew 5:14: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. *How can we let our light shine so that it cannot be hid? 1 John 4:1-11: Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. I love that last scripture! I could read it over and over again! Jake did such a great job. Mallory was totally into the lesson. I would consider that a success! :)

Jesus Picks His Disciples includes the printables for the dozen Disciples egg carton! An oldie but goodie post! poster This week Jesus is going to pick out His helpers. They are called Disciples, which means follower. (Apostle means one who is sent.) Scripture reference: Mark 1:1:14-20; John 1:35-51, Matthew 10:1-8; Mark 3:13-19; Luke 6:13-16 The Disciples included three sets of brothers: Simon (whom He had named Peter) and Andrew. James and John, Zebedee's sons. James and Thaddeus, sons of Alpheus First is (2) Andrew and (4) John. At about 4 in the afternoon, Jesus talked to Andrew and John. They asked Jesus where He was staying, and He told them to come and see. They spent the rest of the day with Jesus. Andrew went to find his brother Simon and told him that they (Andrew and John) had found Jesus. Then Simon went to Jesus and Jesus told Simon that he would be called (1) Peter which means rock. At the same time, John went to get his brother (3) James. John 1:43-51 Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found (6) Philip and told him to “Follow me.” Philip found (7) Bartholomew. He was also called Nathanael. He asked Philip if anything good could come out of Nazareth and Philip told him to come and see Jesus! They went to Jesus and Jesus greeted them and told Bartholomew “Before Philip called you, I saw you sitting under the fig tree". Bartholomew was amazed and Jesus told him that he would see greater things. Because Jesus had known that Bartholomew was sitting under a fig tree, he knew that Jesus was special! So, we have Simon, now called (1) Peter by Jesus and (2) Andrew his brother. The two brothers (3) James & (4) John. And we have (6) Philip. All of these five Disciples were from Bethsaida, which was a fishing town. People think that (11) Simon was also brought in as a Disciple around the same time. (5) Matthew was a tax collector. He collected taxes outside the city of Capernaum. People who came by him had to pay taxes for average items they traded. The fishermen also paid taxes on their catches. People didn’t like the tax collectors because they overcharged to make extra money for themselves. It was usually a 5% fee, but some things were charged up to 12%. People thought the tax collector's money was so unclean, they didn’t ask for their change! Matthew 9:9 says that Jesus saw Mathew sitting at the tax office and walked up to him and said, “Follow Me.” Matthew did. (9) James, son of Alphaeus & (10) Thaddeus. There isn’t much told to us about them. (8) Thomas is known as Doubting Thomas because he didn’t believe that Jesus, after He died was raised from the dead. (12) Last, we have Judas Iscariot. He is the one that betrayed Jesus. He was the treasurer for the Disciples. (John 12:6) He betrays Jesus for money. We’ll learn more about him later. Jesus told them that they were to preach, preach, preach! Jesus told them to heal the sick including the lepers. Click here to download the above visuals.
