Beautiful, high quality, full color lithograph of Norman Rockwell’s painting, “Young Lincoln”, (AKA “Lincoln the Railsplitter) signed in pencil by the artist. Unnumbered. Framed, under glass. In 1965 iconic American artist Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) produced a painting commissioned by Lincoln Mutual Savings Bank (Spokane, WA) of Abraham Lincoln for use as a marketing illustration. Rockwell received $4000 for this work. The painting depicts a young Abraham Lincoln, reading a book as he walks home from his job as a Railsplitter, the family cabin in the background. Rockwell painted Lincoln larger than life on a 7 foot tall, narrow canvas to emphasize Lincoln’s greatness as well as his tall, lanky build. See photo of Rockwell beside his painting. In 1976, Atelier Ettinger (NYC publisher) produced 309 high quality lithograph prints of the painting. Every print was signed in pencil by Rockwell in the bottom right corner. This print, acquired from a South Carolina estate, is believed to be one of 60 unnumbered prints produced by Ettinger. (Source: Norman Rockwell Museum). Framed, under glass. Excellent condition. Sight size: 22” x 12” Framed dimensions: 31” x 20” The idea of portraying Lincoln as "the railsplitter" was the inspiration of Illinois politician Richard J. Oglesby. Oglesby wanted to create an image of Lincoln that would garner political support by everyday working Americans. Rockwell’s painting captured this image on canvas. His manner of dress in working clothes was meant to portray Lincoln as a common man of the times. His red bandana, his ax, etc. convey the type of work Lincoln did. The setting depicts where he came from. Norman Rockwell created over 4,000 original pieces of artwork in his lifetime. More than 300 of them for the Saturday Evening Post covers. His work was prized by magazine editors and advertisers alike - Rockwell painted advertisements for everything from Jell-O to insurance. Early in his career Rockwell painted homespun Americana, small town, family illustrations. Later his work reflected his interest in civil rights and other political issues about which he was concerned. His most famous paintings are of Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms; Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want and Freedom from Fear. Rockwell received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977. “His vivid and affectionate portraits of our country and ourselves have become a beloved part of the American tradition,” said then President Gerald Ford. Silk handkerchief about a yard square with blue/gray border from the Railsplitter blog http://railsplitter.com/?page_id=2772 While there are many Union textiles, particularly dress-scale prints, Confederate partisan prints are rare. The reasons are complex but have a great deal to do with the lack of a textile printing industry in the south. Reproduction of a Union print from my Moda Civil War Reunion collection The mills were in the north. But there were mills in England that would take commissions. An English manufacturer printed this handkerchief featuring portraits of Confederate heroes. In the center is Confederate President Jeff Davis with generals in the corners. Those pictured, beginning at 12 o'clock: Morgan (?) Stonewall Jackson at 1:00 John Mason at 3:00 Robert E. Lee at 5:00, Raphael Semmes at 6:00 Pierre Beauregard at 7 John Slidell at 9:00 and Johnson at 11:00 (perhaps James Johnson) The black and white photos are from Getty Images, which describes the dark version as a "Confederate cotton handkerchief printed in London, 1860." The Railsplitter blog noted "Examples are known in purple and powder blue." One would imagine these textiles are rare indeed. At the end of the nineteenth century there was some discussion of them in the press, including the New York Times, which in 1894 described two versions: a red silk example in good condition owned by Walter Aldrich of Providence, Rhode Island, and a worn white square with a blue border (much like the one at the top of the page) owned by Mrs. William Daingerfield Peachy of Washington, D.C. Lelia Russell Meem Peachy inherited it from her father Dr. Andrew Russell Meem. The Times attributed the origins of these relics to two sets of twelve handkerchiefs ordered by Judah Benjamin when he was in England during the war." The piece at the top recently sold at auction, and I've found references to a few other examples including one in a display (loaned by Miss Green) at the Confederate Museum in Richmond described in an 1898 catalog, which also mentioned the survivor in Providence, Rhode Island. An example in the Hall of History in North Carolina was described in a 1914 catalog and one in a Kenosha, Wisconsin public collection was described recently. The catalog of the 1888 Virginia Exposition listed a square loaned by Captain C.F. Johnston. Questions How many of these were printed? Is that black and white photo really of a cotton bandana or were they all silk? Did Benjamin actually order them when he was doing diplomatic work in London during our Civil War? The 1898 Confederate Museum catalog added to the romance with a story that Miss Green's piece was "One of twelve said to have been ordered from England by Judah P. Benjamin. Was rescued when on its way to this country from the Alabama when she sunk. Only one other [the Providence example] is said to have been saved.... Sinking the Alabama. Rafael Semmes is pictured on the bandana. He was the commander of the CSS Alabama, another Confederate commission built in England in 1862 to harry Union shipping and run the blockade. The Alabama was sunk by a Union boat in French waters in 1864. The CSS Alabama had it's own romance. Combining the story of the bandana with the boat seems to go a little too far in the mythmaking department. It's enough to know these were printed in small runs in various colors, that they made it through the blockades to the Confederacy and that so many survived. Now all we have to do is find a scrap of one in a crazy quilt. Another question---since one has to be skeptical: Benjamin escaped to England after the Civil War. Did he order these as post-War souvenirs?

He was a Collaborative Photographer With a Singular Eye He traveled with the anthropologist Margaret Mead, teamed up with President Lyndon Johnson and shot for Life and Look, creating revelatory pictures. Later, during his student days at Columbia College - which were interrupted by a two-year stint in the army - his skill as a photographer grew, but still regarded photography as no more than a hobby. Then two events in college helped to direct him toward his career in photography. First, he sent off selections of his work to two national photography annuals and was pleased, indeed surprised, when both indicated they were eager to print his pictures - and did. But perhaps more important was his becoming a student of the distinguished anthropologist Margaret Mead. To fulfil a term paper requirement in one of her courses, Mr. Heyman submitted a photographic essay that interested the famous professor. Out of this began a friendship and collaboration that continued for more than twenty years. Their first collaboration began shortly after his graduation from Columbia in 1956, when she invited him to go with her to take pictures in Bali. Other field trips followed: some with Mead and others where he went alone. Since then, Ken Heyman has photographed in more that sixty countries. These photographs have appeared in major exhibits and in two books co-authored with Margaret Mead: Family (1965) and World Enough (1976). While Ken Heyman's name may not be instantly familiar to most, his body of photographic work is extensive and has penetrated printed media and popular culture for the past fifty years. As a photographer for Magnum Photos (an international photographic organization) Heyman shot more than 150 photojournalist assignments for Life magazine and is perhaps best known for his lengthy, twenty-year collaboration with well-known anthropologist Dr. Margaret Mead. Heyman, who was a student of Mead's at Columbia College, submitted a photographic essay to fulfill a term paper assignment in one of her courses.
