This is the perfect time of year to review the structure and rhythm of the Liturgical Calendar and the beauty of each individual season. Last year, I made some coloring pages called "What is Advent?" etc. with some of the signs and symbols of each season to start discussions with my students. This year I'm a bit more organized and have them all combined into one coloring book with a calendar on the cover. Coloring fun can help teach about the liturgical calendar. Linking up with This Ain't the Lyceum for 7 Quick Takes! Happy Ember Friday! Have you never heard of Ember Days? You are in good company. They are not a part of Catholic culture that is in widespread usage. But they could be and I think they should be! Here's the low down on Ember Days and why they are the best part of the liturgical year you never knew existed. 1 What are Ember Days? Essentially, they are 3 days, toward the beginning of each liturgical season, set aside for fasting and prayer and to "to thank God for the gifts of nature, to teach men to make use of them in moderation, and to assist the needy" (New Advent). They are very ancient practice in the Catholic Church and established somewhere between the Apostolic age and the 5th Century. 2 When are Ember Days? They are the Wednesday, Friday, Saturday following: Ash Wednesday Pentecost Feast of the Holy Cross St. Lucia Day That roughly works out to a set of Ember Days in each Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. So why are they awesome? 3 They are a Liturgical Reset Button Each of those days are timed toward the beginning of a season, but are typically within the second or third week of a new season. That means they come right at the point when all of your lofty ideals have come tumbling down. Maybe you are already overwhelmed by all of the prayer options for Lent. Maybe you really wanted to focus more on family this Advent but family time has yet to happen. Maybe you are in a September spiritual slump. Each of those Ember Days come at a time when you could probably do with slowing down, re-focusing, and re-evaluating. 4 They are the Main Reason I Have a Clean House Lemme tell y'all a secret....I don't clean all that often. I tidy. I pick up. I wipe down the kitchen counters and bathroom surfaces (or as I call them the "high consequence areas"). But stuff like scouring the bathtub, dusting, sweeping into corners? Yeah....that happens about four times a year for sure. Ember Days! When the Ember Days roll around, I make sure I set aside time to hit all of those tasks. It makes sense to me to clean out my physical house while I am cleaning spiritual house. Because the Ember Days come around just before the part of that liturgical season that involves hosting parities, the house is then cleaned and ready for festivities! So much to love! 5 They are a Reminder To Pray While We Work Because I am normally cleaning during my Ember Days, I have to pray while working by necessity if the prayer part is going to happen. I have found that to be a huge blessing! Doing the externals of making myself do the tasks I do not enjoy doing, while holding mental intentions and prayers for other people is very humbling. It is an excellent reminder that my work is not about me. 6 They Are Something The Kids Can Understand Ember Days are very much an external practice that has a big internal effect. The whole experience is full of stuff the kids can latch onto: praying for people they care about, helping clean out under their beds, making decisions about what clothes don't fit them anymore, etc. I find that the Ember Days happen often enough for even my little kids to remember the last time they came around. That means they are a convenient way to jump start a family culture centered around the liturgical year. 7 That Thursday Rest Day is Genius At first I thought it was odd to schedule the days Wednesday then Friday and Saturday. Why not just go full steam ahead? But I have decided that the Church was wise to make it that way. Because that Wednesday is probably going to be a little rough as I make myself get moving and get my family back on board. Because there might be other weekday stuff that, by necessity, should get done. Because having one of the days fall on the weekend greatly increases the likelihood this might be a whole family endeavor. Are you observing the Ember Days? All this month I'll be posting about resources to help you live, learn, and celebrate the coming season of Advent. What better way to begin than with a review of a brand new tool for Catholic homes and classrooms- a printable Liturgical Calendar that can be colored in week by week. A resource like this is seriously one of my most frequently asked blog questions, and I never have had a good answer until now. Many printable calendars are not good for varying ages, don't have enough info or are too busy, and more importantly, no one seems to consistently make new ones each year. I told you back in this post that one of my favorite parts of being Catholic is living out the beautiful rhythm of the Liturgical Year. The fasts and feasts, the orderly-ness, the life of Christ lived out in the Church- every Catholic can benefit from making the Liturgical Year more a part of their prayer and daily life. *TelosArt provided me with a free 2017-2018 Liturgical Calendar and printable coloring calendar in exchange for an honest review. I only recommend things that I have used and love, and these opinions are entirely my own. I reviewed TelosArts's Liturgical Calendar a couple of month ago, and have since ordered sets for both our school and CCD program through her generous bulk pricing. TelosArt has created a set of simple, but beautiful, Liturgical Calendars for the 2017-2018 year. This calendar would look lovely hung up in a home as well as in a school classroom, CCD room, RCIA meeting place, etc. It is usable and attractive both for kids and adults, and packs tons of info within the clean design. Liturgical seasons, dates, colors, feast days, and more is included on each calendar. My fellow teachers and catechists are excited to start teaching with these calendars, and after talking more with Jessica from TelosArt, we are thrilled to use a matching printable and colorable calendar with each of our students. The printable blackline 8.5" x 11" calendar holds the Liturgical Year calendar on one side and a list of major Feasts and Solemnities on the back. I thought I'd share a few of the ways I (or our catechists) plan to use these calendars this year: For a Liturgical Year overview- perfect to study just before Advent, about all the major seasons of the year. Students could color in Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time, Lent, and Easter seasons on their own calendars while discussing the representation of the Life of Christ found in one full rotation on the calendar. To talk about the significance of colors- We'll discussion the meaning and symbolism of the colors of the Liturgical Season and connection to feast days. As a classroom display and continuing study- We plan on adding a small post it flag to mark the week of the Liturgical Year we are currently in and move it week by week. Another teacher is adding a spinning arrow on a brad so that they can turn the wheel throughout the year. For small group activities- My school purchased enough calendars that I have a set of five in my room, meaning that I can set up some group work where the students can see the details of the calendar up close. I plan to have them look for and describe the rhythm and structure of the Liturgical Year, pay attention to the location of certain feasts and their seasons, etc. As we discuss those patterns, they will color in the inner season circle on their own personal calendar. As the year progresses- We also will keep our calendar in our faith folder and pull it out as the seasons change. In the outer circle there is a section for all 52 weeks in the year, so we can keep track of the seasons and feasts week by week. To celebrate Feasts and Solemnities- The Convenient month by month outline on the back highlights Saints and Feasts. We can use this to plan ahead for celebrations, chose a patron Saint for a certain time period, connect Feasts to Seasons, etc. We'll use the calendar alongside my Liturgical Year Coloring Book, which you can get in this post. I can't wait until Advent to really dive into all the conversations I know this Liturgical Calendar is going to spark. I'm sure you can think of great ways to use it with your students too!
