For this Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions Lab, students will perform two chemical reactions and measure their temperatures. The first reaction is that of vinegar and baking soda and the second is with hydrogen peroxide and yeast. These are simple and excellent examples of endothermic and exothermic reactions as the temperature changes are dramatic. The students will collect the temperature data using a stopwatch and then graph the data and answer 6 analysis questions. The lab involves simple materials… each group will need: 1 small beaker (50 mL) , 1 stopwatch, 1 thermometer, 1 small bowl or beaker with baking soda and a teaspoon (I put these materials on a tray for each group). On a front table of the classroom, I put a large beaker with vinegar and some bottles of 3% hydrogen peroxide (just drugstore strength). I hold onto the envelope/container of yeast. Teacher notes, graph and analysis questions keys, and scientific explanations for the reactions are included. This lab pairs well with my Endothermic Exothermic Cornell Doodle Notes! Thanks for looking! Sunrise Science

These homeostasis activities are designed to give students a fun and active way to experience homeostasis. This resource has two different homeostasis activities designed with middle school and early high school science students in mind. Each activity is described in detail and is accompanied by a student worksheet. The activities require very little preparation from the teacher, and the students love getting out of their seats and moving around. Teachers can space these activities out over two days or give both activities in one block period class. Each activity promotes student reflection and class discussion. These are great activities where students have fun while learning more about the content. The materials needed for the activities are only one timer for the teacher, graph paper for students, and space to move around. The first activity lasts 20+ minutes. The second activity lasts 45+ minutes. This resource can also be purchased as part of the Homeostasis Package, which comes with everything you need to teach a week-long unit on homeostasis in your middle school or upper elementary science class. What teachers are saying about this resource: “I've used this a few times now and it's been successful each time. It's a fairly quick and fun lab that I use pretty early on. It's also a great intro into teaching students to find their pulse which helps for labs I use later on. Great resource!” “Love doing this in class, the kids had so much fun!” “Kids had a deeper understanding of the content because of this activity” "It is awesome to have a well-thought worksheet to have students really analyze what they experienced." This is a great lab to begin with in your scientific method unit! Students will test whether or not the 5 second rule is really valid or not. Three versions of this lab are included: 1. Teacher led (grades 6-8)- Students will be given the procedures for the lab and be expected to test the experiment, collect data, and draw conclusions. 2. Student led (grades 9-12)- This inquiry based version allows students to come up with their own experimental design. Many students will not have the best set-up, and that is okay! It leads to great discussion about controlled experiments. Both versions have been left editable so you can change food types, amount of time food is dropped, etc. 3. Student led (grades 9-12)- Same format as the inquiry based version but includes a CER chart instead of post-lab questions. To complete this lab you will need to order pre-poured agar plates from a biology supply company or pour your own. Tired of having your students make an invasive species "wanted poster?" Have them write an obituary instead! In this project, students will choose an invasive species to research, but also take it a step further by understanding its role in the ecosystem and brainstorming ways to eliminate the unwanted species. They will have two options to complete the obituary assignment: Option 1: Write an obituary for a species that has died off as the result of an invasive species that has moved into the area. Explain the life history of your organism. Your article should explain specific ways the non-native species outcompeted the native species, and how the non-native species has impacted the ecosystem. Option 2: Write an obituary for an invasive species that you have found a way to eliminate. Your article must explain the method used to exterminate the invasive species. The method chosen must have a minimal impact on other organisms in the area. Your method must be well thought out and be a viable solution to the problem. Included in your purchase are: - Student handout with assignment directions - Student brainstorming and research page - Editable grading rubrics for both options - Sample obituaries for both options You might also be interested in: Skull Lab Ecology Writing Prompts Keystone Species and Trophic Cascades Ecology Exit Tickets Be sure to follow my TpT store by clicking on the green "follow me" next to my seller picture to receive notifications of new products and upcoming sales. This is a great resource for anyone that teaches about early explorers, early exploration, reasons for exploration, and the routes taken. I created this printable for the students to fill in while they listened to different groups present about the explorer they researched. These look great and are fun for students to cut out and glue into their interactive notebook. These could also be used as a center or rotation activity where students research an explorer and fill out the information for that specific explorer. I use the included research poster to guide and organize student research. Students use the cards to then present and create a more concise poster I have also had students fill these out while they listen to classmates share their report. Making these a great way to hold student's accountable while they listen. This Explorer poster is an awesome research tool. I have my students fill this out while they are completing their research on their chosen explorer. This allows the students to easily see what information they still need to find, and access their research when writing their essays. The great thing about this product is that it can stand alone without an essay or additional project, or serves as an effective scaffold to an Early Explorer project. Research Poster: Name of explorer Route of most famous exploration Reason or motivation for exploration Draw their portrait Birth year and Death Year Where they were born Favorite Facts What they were famous for Flag of sponsoring country - I have every student complete one of these sheets. For explorer projects students work in groups so these sheets are a great way to keep everyone accountable. This resource also includes a card for the following explorers: Leif Ericson Marco Polo Francisco Pizarro Prince Henry Bartolomeu Dias Christopher Columbus Amerigo Vespucci John Cabot Vasco De Gama Vasco De Balboa Ponce De Leon Ferdinand Magellan Hernando Cortes Sir Francis Drake Samuel De Champlain Henry Hudson Jacques Cartier Francisco Coronado Hernando De Soto James Cook *****UPDATED VERSION***** Now includes blank cards as well as: Robert de La Salle John Smith Daniel Boone Lewis, Clark, & Sacagawea Students must provide the nation the explorer represented, their purpose for exploration, a favorite fact or accomplishment, and draw the route of the explorers on a map. This lab is best used in your unit on "Matter and Change" to reinforce the concepts of physical properties and intensive properties. In this experiment, the student will be given two liquids: isopropyl alcohol and an unknown. The student will determine the temperature at which they boil and identify the unknown according to its boiling point. Purpose of the Lab: To determine the boiling point of isopropyl alcohol. To calculate the percent error between the known boiling point of isopropyl alcohol and the boiling point determined experimentally. To determine the identity of an unknown sample of liquid by determining its boiling point. MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT: Thermometer (-10 to 110 deg. C) Beral pipet (thin-stem/long) Rubber bands (very small) Beaker (250 ml) Bunsen burner Isopropyl alcohol Acetone Matches What is included in this product? Editable lab handouts that are ready to be printed and passed out to your students. Complete instructions. 2-page Teacher Guide containing set-up instructions, tips, and suggestions. By making careful observations, students will watch for and observe “rings” of condensation that rise up the tube of the pipet. Once these “rings” of condensation are stable, students will record the temperature at which the rings neither move up or down. Students will carry out three trials to get an average boiling point for each liquid. Students will complete 5 analysis questions. Students gain practice and experience in using proper lab techniques. You will receive both an editable Word document as well as a pdf form of the lab.
