Welcome. I am so happy that you stopped by. My garden gate is always open for you to come in and sit and relax with a cup of tea early in the morning when the air is bright and fresh and still cool from the night time ocean breezes. Most of Southern California is sweltering, however, we are still staying fairly cool near the coast compared to the high temperatures inland. I can tell that Summer is starting to wind down when it is time to pick the last of the Hydrangeas to dry to use in Fall arrangements. Let's join Bentley, my helpful Studio Assistant, in the garden to see what is ready to cut and then find something to paint. The Delphiniums are fading and it is time to pick the last of them. I love the blue and purple color of them and they are one one my favorite cottage garden flowers. These are the pale washed out blue Hydrangeas. These are the brighter blue ones! The difference in colors of the flowers on the same bush is amazing. This year some of my hydrangeas were a lovely blue and some of them a more washed out pale blue - it is hard to get them the right color. When I add the acid early in the year before they bloom - I never know what color they will be until they bloom - some turn out dark and some turn out light!!! My vintage blue Rocket bicycle is the inspiration for lots of my bicycle paintings - you have probably seen it many times and I hope you are not getting tired of it. I decided to paint it with some of the hydrangea blossoms in the basket. I put 3 coats of vanish on the little bicycle paintings so I can hang them outside in the garden. I always take lots of photographs so I can use them for reference after the real flowers in the garden are gone during the Fall and Winter months. I love the classic look of blue and white china and decided to paint the blue Hydrangeas in a blue and white vase. Blue and white china has become a signature for me and is found in most of my larger paintings. "Art In The Garden" Dear Readers, Thank you for stopping by. I sincerely appreciate your visits, e-mails, comments and those of you who follow my blog. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to see me paint something special. Due to the numerous requests I receive regarding purchasing the small original art I usually blog about I made the decision to sell only small art in my ETSY shop - all art is an original and will be $45.00 or less and vary in size from 9x9. 8x10 or 8x8 or smaller. I want to keep the shipping price to a maximum of $10.95 and will ship via US Post Office. I will be on a blog break until August 24th so I can work on my ETSY shop. My ETSY shop can be reached by clicking on the photo of any painting on the right side of my blog under MY ETSY SHOP. My large paintings can be found at the Heart of The Island Gallery on Balboa Island. Have a lovely week. Blessings, Erin "The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places . . . and you shall be like a watered garden . . . whose waters never fail." Isaiah 58:11

Good morning! It is a beautiful sunny autumn day here again with the promise of a beautiful holiday weekend. We have several tours from Japan in the next few days before wrapping up our season and putting the garden to bed. Doesn't seem like yesterday we were looking forward to those first blooms.? Don't worry in no time we will be doing that again. It is definitely true that the older we get time goes by. Anyway, it is the season to gather in some garden goodness to enjoy over the months ahead. I love to pick some of my hydrangeas to have indoors as they dry so nicely. Just put them in a vase with a couple of inches of water and leave them to dry while enjoying their beauty. We have lots of hydrangeas in different shades. Don't they look pretty in the vintage McCoy vases.. A little late blooming David phlox in with the hydrangea. This fall blooming monkshood is just coming into bloom-love it's late season color with the burning bushes , asters and sedums. A late summer bouquet of wildflowers that I gathered on our morning walk a few weeks ago but didn't have a chance to share as I had computer issues. And as a bonus for you today this basket of goodies- what could be sweeter than these two puppies? They are Bernese Mountain puppies that came to visit with their sweet owner my friend Snow. I am joining My Romantic Homes for Show & Tell Friday Thank you for visiting, Carolyn
The White Wedding® Panicle Hydrangea is a new and greatly-improved form of the traditional PG Hydrangea, and perfect for smaller gardens in cold areas. It has very large rounded heads of white flowers, not long and tapering like other panicle hydrangeas. The stems are very strong and upright, so the heads never flop, and always look great. Its moderate size, to just 6 feet tall and wide, makes it perfect in small gardens or smaller spaces, and it grows just as well in warmer states, where it will bloom in early summer. It is much easier to grow that mophead hydrangeas, and it grows well in sun or shade. Perfect as a specimen in a small space, or planted in groups to fill larger ones, it also makes an effective and interesting informal barrier or lower screen. Very large, almost spherical white blooms in summer and fall Very hardy variety, to zone 3 Perfect small form of the PG Hydrangea Easy to grow in sun or partial shade Thrives in all kinds of soil The White Wedding® Panicle Hydrangea is a top-choice plant for even the coldest zones, but it also thrives in heat too, and it is perfect for southern and western gardens. Grow it in full sun in cooler areas, and in partial shade in warmer ones. It grows in any well-drained soil, of any pH, and it is normally never bothered by pests or diseases. It has all the good points of the old ‘PG’ variety, but none of the bad ones, with flower heads that never flop. Easy to grow and trouble free, this beautiful shrub is winning hearts everywhere.

This deciduous Smooth Hydrangea variety is adaptable to most soils, as long as they drain quickly. The root systems won't tolerate standing water, for long. However, Annabelle can be used near the edge of Rain Gardens. Hardy in USDA growing zones 3-9, this variety has minimal pruning requirements and growing Hydrangeas like this is very easy. It blooms on new wood, so each year, you'll start over. Get out there every year in late winter, early spring. You'll simply snip all branches down to the ground and remove them. New shoots will grow and develop each year. We recommend pruning Annabelle Hydrangea in spring, rather than fall. That way, you get a chance to enjoy the interesting dried flower heads all winter long. You need something to look at! Annabelle performs best with full sun exposure of 6 hours of sunlight a day to produce a glorious flower display. Sunlight also allows the growth of nice, sturdy stems that effortlessly hold the huge blooms aloft. The plant will tolerate a partial sun or part shade position—such as the east side of a house - but not full shade. Please ensure they receive at least 4 hours of light a day where you decide to place them. Dappled shade and afternoon shade are best. However, don't plant Annabelle in full shade positions. If they don't receive enough sunlight, they will develop thinner stems that may have trouble supporting the large flower heads. Full shade will also limit flower production. It can take more sun than most people think, especially if you provide a nice, thick layer of mulch over the root ball. Give Annabelle Hydrangea as much sun as you can by pruning nearby trees. Provide an even amount of regular water, especially early in the season during flower development. Protect young plants with supplemental water as needed. Use this easy test to see if your new plant needs water. Poke your finger into the nearby soil (yes, you can wear gloves). If it feels moist, no need to water that day. Check again tomorrow. If the ground is starting to get dry, give your new plant a nice long drink. The massive, rounded, mophead flowers are actually corymbs that are comprised of many sterile florets. No need to worry about self-seeding or spreading out of bounds. Whether this is your first yard, or your fifth - you will never regret using Annabelle Hydrangea in your yard. With enormous, pristine white blooms, lush foliage and a forgiving nature, she'll be your best friend. Get this flowering shrub off your wishlist and order at NatureHills.com online garden center today! Frequently Asked Questions Can Annabelle Hydrangeas take full sun?
