(Topps) Garbage Pail Kids—those genius and irreverent trading cards that feature lots of puke and bombs and blood—are back with a new series that takes aim and the foibles of five of the 2016 presidential candidates: Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, and Ben Carson. And they’re pretty good, too, but it’s mostly …

Man, we wish we'd held on to so. many. things.
Lately I've been doing a bunch of Garbage Pail Kid related artwork so I thought I'd post some of it. I really like doing my own versions of some of the old cards and it's really helped to get me out of an artistic slump. I figured it might be fun just to start with the 15th series cards so the first one I did was #581 (Shel Game/ 3-Card Monte). Here is the original card. I did the original illustration in felt-tip pen and tried to mix my own style with a little bit of Tom Bunk and Robert Crumb. Here is the final version after I colored it with photoshop and added the logo and name banner. The next card is #582 (Take-out Dinah/ Chow Mame). I did this one with felt-tip also. For the final colored version I did on Photoshop I decided to add another G.P.K. into the image. On her plate I added (Misfortune Cookie/ Chow Maynard) from card #509 from series 13. Next I did card #583 (Lyle Tile/ Harry Glyph). I did the original figure and background in ballpoint pen. I wanted to change things up for the final Photoshop version so I added some repetition. Card #584 (Slimy Hymie/ Crawlin' Rollin) was next. I knew I was going to have fun with the worms. I did this one in felt-tip and decided to do a full figure. I spent a little more time coloring this one. I wanted to add some of the shading and highlights I didn't really do on the previous cards. I still did a card version to stay with the program. I did one of my favorite cards #585 (Picky Nick/ Beulah Ghoul) next. I decided instead of the skull on the card I would slip in another G.P.K. again and I knew the perfect one right off the bat. Another one of my favorites #328 (Glowing Amber/ Bright Dwight) from the 8th series. I sketched this one in ballpoint with shading this time. For the final Photoshop image I was lucky enough to have a great scan of the original card art so I just tweaked the background and cut, pasted, and colored out the part I needed. I figured while I already had the Glowing Amber version that I'd do a final colr version of that card also. The next card in the 15th series was #586 (Peter Cheater/ Dean List). I did the original drawing in felt-tip pen again. I changed a couple of minor things in the final version and my daughter Sam helped out coloring it. She did a perfect job and was an amazingly fast learner. #587 (Mala Nutrition/ Cornelia Flake) was a lot of fun. I was inspired by Tom Bunk again while working on this. I wanted to add some of his gross little details like the zits and band-aid. I did the original drawing in felt-tip again. For the final colored version I decided to import a tile grid and enlarge the pupils because my wife thought she looked psycho. I agreed with her and fixed them but I did have to remind her that it's not normal to eat cereal out of the toilet. I also used a Wacky Package image from the 70's for the cereal box. The next card #588 is (Yo! Gert/ Ice cream Connie). I thought I would do a version where she was in a bowl instead of a cone. I did the drawing in felt-tip. I'm not too happy with the way it turned out and will most likely redo it later. Sam and I had fun coloring it though. She made a version where it was mint chocolate-chip, and I made a strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate version we named "Neal Politan". The next card I did was #589 (Ecch Benedict/ Brain Les). I just sketched it out with pencil and have yet to do a colored version. I plan on doing a colored version in the near future. Another one I'm still working on is the next card #590 (Little Leak Len/ Snot-ball Saul) So far I just drew the figure in felt-tip. I'm thinking it might be fun to put other baseball related G.P.K.s on the field. One more piece of Garbage Pail Kids art I wanted to share is a ceramic Cabbage Patch Kid I bought at a thrift store a while back. I purchased it with the intentions of painting it as Leaky Lindsay/ Messie Tessie but I hadn't gotten around to doing it. I finally painted it the other day and even though the hair/clothes still aren't the right color I like it a lot better now. Here are some pics: I'll keep posting updates on my Garbage Pail Kid art as I'm working on it. Happy Holidays!!

Art Spiegelman’s career has produced a wide-ranging body of work. There are punk favorites Garbage Pail Kids trading cards, his comics for Playboy, his New Yorker covers, and (of course) his Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel Maus, a complex and stylized account of his father’s reflections on the Holocaust. Spiegelman has worked in the “highest” and “lowest” of artistic milieus, and while Garbage Pail Kids are probably considered the nadir of his vulgarity, his lesser-known Wacky Packages series are their obvious predecessor. Drawn primarily by Spiegelman and then painted in full by pulp master Norman Saunders, these parodies of household brands were sold in packs of five with a stick of gum. Although packaged as trading cards, they were actually stickers you could pop out, presumably for easy defacement of public property. The work was juvenile and snide, but this stuff was the Clickhole of the late 1960’s, and although reboots and new series of Wacky Packages were launched in later years (with art by the likes of Kim Deitch, Drew Friedman and Bill Griffith) it’s the early ones from Spiegelman and Saunders that really skewered brands in a fresh, irreverent way. While Wonder Bread actually ended...
Reading the morning newspaper is a relaxing ritual for many people, but unfortunately, this admirable habit results in the waste of a lot of paper. Rather than simply tossing your old newspapers in the garbage pail (a very environmentally unfriendly approach), or even putting them in the recycling, you can let your trash save you some cash by using your old papers as a substitute for store-bought cleaning, lining, and packaging products. Here are some of our top ideas for repurposing those daily broadsheets.
