THE DRESDEN CODEX The Dresden Codex is an ancient Mayan book dating as far back as the 13th or 14th century. It was rediscovered in the city of Dresden, hence the book’s present name. Only four Mayan manuscripts are known to still exist worldwide, of which this is the oldest and best preserved. The Dresden Codex comprises 78 pages of Mayan hieroglyphics, numerals and figures which provide accurate astronomical tables, ritual and divination calendars, calculations of the phases of Venus, eclipses of the sun and moon, instructions relating to New Year ceremonies, and descriptions of the locations of the Rain God, which culminate in a full-page miniature showing a great deluge. The codex has played a key role in the deciphering of Mayan hieroglyphics and the understanding of the Mayan Calendar. In addition to the Dresden Codex you'll also receive five other ancient South American manuscripts each of which has been scanned in high quality and preserved forever in pdf format - easy to read on your laptop or computer, or transfer to tablet, smartphone, kindle or e-reader. Maps, bodies, stories, symbols, totems, machines, talisman, graphics. These are the things that interest me in making art these days. I circle around and through them in a number of different ways as I work, but always I come back to these things. They form a kind of cellular structure to how I approach making art […]

The Codex Madrid—also known as the Codex Tro-Cortesianus—originated in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, perhaps in the Tayasal locale, in the fifteenth century. It is one of the four surviving Maya manuscripts containing almanacs that served as handbooks for divination and prognostication. The others are the Codex Dresden, the Codex Paris, and the Codex Grolier. The Codex Madrid is, like the...

Maya scribes spent their time writing in special books made of paper called codices. In these books, scribes faithfully recorded centuries of Maya history, astronomical calculations, and religious practices. Some of the Maya codices even recorded travel and hunting details. Others included tables for predicting when an eclipse of the sun would occur.
