Synopsis Expand/Collapse Synopsis Dantes Divine Comedy is one of the most highly regarded works of world literature and a classic that continues to inspire fiction and poetry today. Written between 1308 and 1321, the three books of this epic poem--"Inferno," "Purgatorio," and "Paradiso"--tell the story of the poets personal journey through the afterlife, an odyssey that leads him from his wanderings in the spiritual wilderness to a paradise shaped by Divine love. This edition of The Divine Comedy features the classic translation of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It also features more than one hundred engravings by Gustave Dore, long considered the greatest artist to illustrate Dantes timeless masterpiece.
In 1901, Vittorio Alinari, head of Fratelli Alinari, the world’s oldest photographic firm, decided to publish a new illustrated edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Inferno, Canto X: Many artists have attempted to illustrate Dante Alighieri's epic poem the Divine Comedy, but none have made such an indelible stamp on our collective imagination as the Frenchman Gustave Doré.
Brand New/Unread condition! ABOUT THE BOOK: Midway upon the journey of our life I found myself within a forest dark, For the straightforward pathway had been lost. In Inferno, the first of the three books in his Divine Comedy, the poet Dante, adrift spiritually and emotionally in life, journeys down to Hell. A prolific and extremely talented wood and steel engraver, illustrator, and sculptor Gustave Doré created macabre Visions. Angels, demons, historical drama and human tragedy filled his detailed etchings. The Paradise Lost illustrations and Dante's Divine Comedy have become so praised that many have become macabre popular culture items in their own right.

"Empyrean," illustrated by Gustave Doré in the 19th century, is a mesmerizing and ethereal depiction of the highest heaven. The illustration portrays an intricate and luminous celestial scene, with countless angels and divine beings forming concentric circles around a central radiant light. The figures appear to be in a state of rapture, their wings and flowing garments contributing to the dynamic and swirling movement within the composition. At the bottom center, two human figures, likely representing Dante and Beatrice from Dante's "Divine Comedy," stand in awe, gazing upwards towards the blinding source of divine illumination. Doré's masterful use of light and shadow, along with his attention to detail, creates a sense of infinite depth and spiritual transcendence, capturing the sublime and otherworldly essence of the Empyrean. A series of book covers and interior spreads, a contemporary take on Dante's classic poems. I wanted to create a set of book covers that did not use images from the Bosch Hell painting, or any images of Dante and Virgil that are normally found on covers for the Divine Comedy. I was inspired by Dante's use of mathematics and architecture in describing Hell, Heaven and Purgatory. I employed simple geometric shapes and color to represent these places, while still keeping the design simple, and allowing the reader to use their imagination when reading these vivid poems.
