Do you want to learn how to dress like Phryne Fisher? Here is my take on modern dressing taking inspiration from the 1920s and the famous lady detective.
This month, my book club is reading Bill Bryson's latest book: One Summer: America, 1927. I'm only about half-way through, but so far it's been fascinating. That summer, Charles Lindberg made the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic from New York to Paris, Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs, and Al Jolson's "The Jazz Singer" was released as the first "talking picture". If you're a fan of the show Boardwalk Empire, you may already be familiar with the flappers, gangsters and bootleggers of the era (season 4 was supposed to take place in 1924), but as I've been reading, I've found myself wondering what everyday life looked like for most Americans. A little internet sleuthing turned up a treasure trove of great photos. Read on for lots of fun photos from 1927: Here's downtown San Francisco, 1927. This is what 4-wheel drive looked like back then- such tiny trucks! Milk was still delivered via horse and buggy in Washington D.C. Babies were only ten cents! So cheap! Clara Bow hats were all the rage I think they mean "The scandalous American flapper Girl"- look at those bare shoulders! This is what you wore if you weren't a flapper. Side note: aren't these realistically colorized photos amazing? They really seem to bring the past to life. Check out more colorized photos here. Swimsuits were H-O-T-T!! Even the dudes were dapper. Will the nautical look ever not be in fashion? And even back then, there were weirdos. Yes, she is painting a picture of a dog smoking a pipe... For more photos from 1927, you can check out my Pinterest page. The website Shorpy.com is also chock-full of amazing old photos. [Photos, from top: girls on beach, San Francisco, 4-wheel drive, milk buggy, babies, Clara Bow, American Girl, school photo, diving board, dapper dude, sailor jacket, smoking dog]

The American Transcendentalists: their prose and poetry edited by Perry Miller paperback in used condition, has some underlining throughout text "The established religion in New England in the 1830's-the decade when Transcendentalism flourished - was Unitarianism, a religion that epitomized rationalism, liberalism, and the cult of social conformity. It was in its vehement rejection of these Unitarian values that Transcendentalism began and became the most extensive and energetic upsurge of the mind and spirit in America until the 1920's. Sustained by the minds and hearts of such writers as Emerson, Thoreau, William Ellery Channing, Orestes Brown-son, Margaret Fuller and Bronson Alcott, who are among the authors represented by Perry Miller in this anthology, and invigorated by the works of such Europeans as Words-worth, Coleridge, Carlyle, and Goethe, Transcendentalism became a religion in itself - passionate, radical, and, in the estimation of its opponents, subversive.Conventionally Transcendentalism has been viewed by historians as an idyll - a pastoral moment, benign and faintly eccentric, in America's past. One aim of this anthology is to challenge and replace this view with evidence that Transcendentalism was less idyllic by far than we have supposed: that instead it confronted an orthodox conformity with vigorous and passionate rebellion - the first of a succession of revolts by youthful Americans against the complacency and Philistinism of their elders." Vogue unpacks 1920s fashion, from the decade’s prevailing trends to the era’s top designers.
Exploring 1930s fashion and my growing obsession with the flutter styled skirts that were very popular during a time of austerity and great innovation.
Decade Lookbook: 1910's Part 2 Fashion from 1910 to 1919 in the Western world was characterized by great opulence in the first half of the decade-- a stark contrast with the somber practicality of garments worn during the Great War, or WWI. Men's pants were worn cuffed to ankle-length and creased. Skirts rose from floor length to well above the ankle and women began to bob their hair. This is my second 1910's lookbook; click here you'd like to see the rest of my decade lookbooks. When I first picked up a vintage 1920s clothing catalog, I read the descriptions about dresses made of voile and stockings made of lisle. Huh? Voile? Lisle? These are not fabrics I read on my clothing tags. Turning to the colors, I get even more confused. What is Gas blue? Palmetto green? French beige? Briar

Most 1920s makeup tutorials online show how to apply 1920s inspired makeup or looks based off of black and white film movie stars. Both are inaccurate to the real 1920s. Makeup for the everyday woman was much softer and more natural. This tutorial is about creating the natural 1920s look for both the day and
