One of my Visuals. We are continuing to "EXPLORE" the various attributes of the FRUIT of The Spirit. The children are really excited about this topic. Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, I decided to do an "extension" to last weeks lesson. We are going to have different lesson for every attribute....but, because so many of my students are out of town, I did not want to proceed forth into the LOVE lesson. I did not want them to miss any of the lessons on the individual attributes. My students will be making a "Fruit of The Spirit" fruit basket as their Take-Home project. I think they turned out very cute...They will color and glue the basket together and then add "paper fruit" and the Fun Foam Fruit as well. For their "Explorer Journal" activity the kiddos will be making a Fruit of The Spirit Puzzle. The will add the puzzle pieces to make a complete apple. My focus with them is going to be that we have to have ALL the attributes to have a COMPLETE fruit...If we are missing any of the attributes we are NOT completely the way GOD wants us to be...so, we need to improve, change or add the attributes we are missing. Completed Fruit of The Spirit Puzzle. Our Review Game for this week is a Bean Bag Game...The kiddos will answer a question from the lesson and then get the opportunity to throw a bean-bag at the "Toss-A-Cross" game...They will then have to answer the question that they turn over with their bean-bag. My students LOVE to throw bean-bags...so, I know they will LOVE playing this game. (BTW, the game was made from a old Toss-A-Cross game, that I purchased at a yard sale for 50 cents. Always keep your eye out for things you can re-purpose for Bible Class.)
He sings. He dances. He makes all the girls swoon. Fans all over the world sit on the edge of their seats waiting for the release of his newest video. He's all the rage and is stalked online by groupies of all ages. Justin? No, Dustin - Dustin Smith, that is. Also known as the Teacher Tipster, Mr. Smith is a favorite of teachers everywhere and he's an absolute genius. If you've watched his videos, you know that his love of teaching is genuine and he does an amazing job at combining learning and humor, while still showing a clear respect for his students. In a nutshell, watching him makes you want to become a better teacher, and using his tips helps you get there. If you haven't discovered him yet, check him out here. I've used a bunch of Mr. Smith's tips in my classroom, and I have a few more ready to go for the new year. If you've read my recent posts, you know that I plan to really focus on the teaching and reteaching of behavioral expectations in the beginning of the year. To help with this, I can't wait to use Dustin's lesson on teaching self-control using bubbles. First, he blows some bubbles and, as expected, the kids all pop them. Then, he challenges them to NOT pop the bubbles even if one lands on the tip of their nose. As he says, "Do they want to pop them? Yes- big time. But are they going to pop them? No way." This is such a great way to introduce the concept of self control and launch a discussion about stopping to think before you act. Dustin refers to it as a "bullet" in your year that you can refer back to again and again. "Think about that time when we didn't pop the bubbles..." Genius! Check it out - So, I bought myself a jumbo bottle of bubbles at my favorite place - the Dollar Tree - and made a cute little label to make it an official bottle of "Self Control Bubbles." I plan to do the mini-lesson during the first week of school and then have the bottle handy to use as needed throughout the year. I love the idea of having a concrete, visual cue to remind the kids of the concept of self-control. After a while, teachers can call for volunteers to identify the Bible story. This will encourage children to learn the names of the Bible stories. By hearing the names of the Bible stories as they play each time, they will soon be able to identify them. This board game can be used in numerous ways to teach children: 1) to identify the Bible stories by a picture 2) name a fact about the Bible story 3) answer a question about the Bible story (review previous lessons) 4) spell a character or object from the Bible story This game is free, however it is only to be used for classroom and personal use.
