'Each year Eliot's presence reasserts itself at a deeper level, to an audience that is surprised to find itself more chastened, more astonished, more humble.' Ted Hughes Poet, dramatist, critic and editor, T. S. Eliot was one of the defining figures of twentieth-century poetry. This edition of Collected Poems 1909-1962 includes his verse from Prufrock and Other Observations (1917) to Four Quartets (1943), and includes such literary landmarks as The Waste Land and Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.
I like to spend a couple weeks each year teaching my students about poetry. We do a number of fun activities in addition to reading and writing different poems. We have a poetry battle, rank poetry, make a poetry journal, and much more! Here is a look into my poetry unit.... To kick off my poetry unit I have my students each complete this KWL Chart about Poetry. We then discuss what poetry is, what a poet's purpose is, what poems can have, etc. I use and display these posters during my unit! Over the years I have found poems that are great for young children to listen to. Instead of having multiple books that I have to search through to find the poem I want to read, I have typed the poems on individual pages and compiled them together. Each day I choose two different poems to read to my class. After reading the two poems, my students each vote on which poem they liked the best. We fill in the Poetry Battle bracket together. By the end of my poetry unit my class has found their all-time favorite poem (which is usually Brod Bager's poem Booger Love)! I also like for my students to fill out the Ranking Poetry page after listening to a poem. I like for them to fill these out after listening to poems that have the different parts of figurative language in them that we have learned about. Here are some of the different figurative language topics that I cover during my poetry unit. Each poster has the term, definition, and example. If you are looking for Figurative Language Posters click HERE to download my 23 Figurative Language Posters from my TpT Store! Each student makes their own Poetry Journal throughout my unit. They choose the cover of their journal. They color, cut, and glue it on the top of a brad folder. Each poem the student writes gets hole-punched and added to their folder! Each student also fills out the "About the Poet" page and adds it as the first page to their poetry journal. Here's a look at the different poems we learn about and write throughout the unit. I usually pick one poem a day to teach and have the students write during our allotted writing time. Word Picture Poem Who, What, When, Where, Why Poem Triplet Poem Shape Poem Quatrain Poem List Poem Limerick Poem -ing Poem I'm So Smart Poem Important Poem If It Weren't For You Poem If I Were...Poem I Wish...Poem I Like...Poem I Am Poem Holiday Poem Haiku Poem Free Verse Poem Diamante Poem Couplet Poem Color Poem Cinquain Poem Bio Poem Alphabet Alliteration Poem Adjective Poem 5 Senses Poem 2-Worder Poem Acrostic Poem By the end of the unit each student has a wonderful collection of poetry they have written. I slip a parent note in the first pocket of the folder and send each student's poetry journal home. The parent note tells the parents all the wonderful things we learned during our poetry unit and invites them to sit down with their child and read each poem their child has written. Every year I loved creating a cute keepsake book for my students to take home at the end of the year. This yearbook was inspired by my own kindergarten yearbook. Included in this yearbook is a page that can be used for every student in the class, a preschool poem, and a page for a handprint, as well as a self-portrait with writing prompt for each month of the school year (September-June), an autograph page, a place for a teacher's note, and a page for photos. I've also included three blank pages with cute borders for anything you want. If you need this yearbook tweaked for any reason, just let me know. This yearbook is also available in my store for 1st grade and kindergarten. Happy teaching! :)

This editable end-of-year letter/poem keepsake to your students, "Farewell From The Teacher" set is always a hit with Teachers, students and their families year on year as a way of giving a memorable goodbye. It includes a full-page letter sized fun themed letter/poem plus matching bookmark keepsake for students in full, super vibrant color! Psst: it's also available separately in my store in an AUS/NZ/UK compatible format (there's a link straight to it further down this listing). You can personalize these letters/poems and bookmarks to present to your students at the end of the year in a bright, fun and memorable way - all in a super quick and easy way thanks to my included game changer! The full-page sized letter/poem could be glued into a students portfolio or perhaps even presented to them with a graduation gift and/or certificate at an end-of-year celebration. You could even present it to a student leaving your class/school as a lovely parting keepsake (the wording of the poem allows for compatibility whether it's a one-off student leaving, or it's the end of the school year for everyone). Giving the gift of a book to your students as a parting gift? Why not pop the matching bookmark inside? So what exactly is the game changer mentioned earlier? This is simply a one page table/grid included in the set, where you enter your name and each of your students names just once, that then automatically populates all of that data instantly into ALL letters/poems and bookmarks! That's right, no moving through countless pages to manually enter name details. You simply type your names in once, moving between each one entered with just your tab key, then they're all instantly ready to print! The table/grid allows space for a whole class worth of names (up to 30 at a time). Need more than 30? You simply click on the red box that says "reset all names" to enter more. This reset button will save you so much time if and when you need to add more student names. Without it, you would need to remove all text from each of the boxes manually, which would be quite time-consuming. I made these for my daughters kindergarten in 2016 and the Teachers and staff loved them, especially the enormous amount of positive feedback they received from families about them too. Everyone just loved what a lovely parting keepsake they were for their children to cherish from their year at kindergarten. They were glued into 50 separate child portfolios as "the last page" of their portfolio for the year. The Teachers and staff of that center have been adding this into the portfolios every year since, with wonderful feedback each time. Why not check out my preview PDF file attached to this listing for higher quality perspective than thumbnail previews allow? This set comes in a USA letter sized format. It can easily be printed to tabloid size if preferred though, by a quick adjustment of your print setting preferences. Are you looking for this in an AUS/NZ/UK size format? And I'm back! Sorry to have been MIA for a while, but I was busy moving my daughter back to school across the country! I still can't believe she's already a sophomore! I just loved the excitement and anticipation in the air: all the cars pulling up with overstuffed trunks, dads carrying boxes after boxes into dorms, students arriving off the metro, in taxis and Ubers, rolling suitcases down the street. Friends calling out greetings and screams & hugging friends. Made me a little nostalgic to go back to college! I got back just in time for Back to School Night! I love my new class and had a terrific evening sharing our class highlights and goals with my new parents! We had some interesting discussions about Common Core & hopefully some of their misconception and fears are put to rest! (I included a couple of slides as talking points in my presentation.) One of my favorite beginning of the year projects is called our Me Museum. (Kudos & thanks to my mentor & friend, Cynthia!! Although now retired, her ideas always involved differentiation and the whole child!) It's a short-term project where students bring in artifacts about themselves, decorate a shoebox as their gallery, then write reflections and an acrostic poem. Other than decorating their box at home, all work is done in the class. Students use their artifacts as tangible objects to spark their writing; first sharing aloud, then writing. They bring in one artifact to represent their family, one artifact to represent an accomplishment, and an artifact to represent something they enjoy. It's really a wonderful project because the kids are so excited to talk about themselves (of course!) and share sides of them we may not know about in school. The acrostic poem describes the student, as well as its symbolic border as another way for the kids to add more information about themselves. My artistic kids LOVE drawing pictorial representations of themselves! I also share my own Me Museum as way of introducing myself as more than just their teacher (and as a model for the finished product). After the museums are complete, we invite parents and families to our Me Museum exhibit and gallery showing. It's a wonderful opportunity to showcase your class and elicits wonderful discussions! You can get your copy of the directions and rubric here. If you try this project with your class, I'd love to hear about it and see pictures!

Prefixes and Suffixes Puzzles - practice prefixes and suffixes with these fun word puzzles where students match the word to the correct prefix or suffix to build words and complete the puzzles! If you need fun grammar activities that engage ALL your learners, these are it! The pictures provide wonderful support for those who need it while the puzzle format keeps your advanced students so engaged. If you love my math and reading puzzles, I think you'll love these too! Click on the green PREVIEW button to check out some more of the prefix and suffix puzzles! Students take each word puzzle piece and figure out which prefix/suffix they add to it to make the word in the picture. There are 15 prefixes puzzles included (re, un, pre, dis, under, bi, multi, over, mis, tele, auto, micro, super, uni, oct) and 20 suffixes puzzles included (ful, less, ly, y, able, ness, er, ist, phone, graph, er, est, like, s, es, ed, ing, ed (d), ed (t), ed (ed). These are a lot of fun for introducing, learning, or reviewing prefixes and suffixes! Building the words and making silly non-words from the prefixes and suffixes while matching them to the correct puzzle is my favorite part! They are a great independent center too where you can give a few puzzles to your students to match. You can give a few at a time (however many that student or group can handle) or use them to teach specific skills. For example, if you're studying plurals, you could give them the -s and -es suffixes puzzle so they figure out which ending to add to the word to make it plural and correct. **Added**: UK spelling version for multicolor/multicolour and colorful/colourful For more prefixes and suffixes fun, check out: My Little Book of Prefixes My Little Book of Suffixes Prefixes Posters and Picture Cards Suffixes Posters and Picture Cards Prefixes and Suffixes Charts Prefixes Bottle Cap Centers Suffixes Bottle Cap Centers

Well, it's four days after the storm and Connecticut is slowly getting back to normal. Many of my co-workers and neighbors are still without power and/or water and the clean-up is taking its toll on everyone's spirits a little. We've certainly seen worse storms, but this one was just so widespread that its just going to take time to get everything up and running. That apparently includes the start of school. Teachers were supposed to return to work this past Monday, and the first day of school was scheduled for tomorrow. We had a slightly extended summer vacation when they canceled our work day on Monday but we went in yesterday for meetings and today to set up our classrooms. (Don't you love how they think we can really get it all done in one day?) After a flurry of activity today trying to get everything ready for tomorrow, our principal announced that there were still too many downed power lines and road closures for the children to safely make it to school tomorrow so they have decided to push back the first day to next Wednesday. Yikes! I certainly could use some more time to get the room ready, but now we're starting the year with 3 "snow" days under our belts. What can you do? I feel like I'm already joining the party late because so many of you have already posted pictures of your beautiful classrooms and mine is still not finished. Since you've let me peek into your world, I thought I would post a few pics of what I've done so far so you can take a look at my home away from home. The door to my classroom. This is what you see when you first walk in. Our school was completely remodeled a year and a half ago - how great are the cubbies? The famous Pinterest clock wall with foam clocks from Target. I LOVE this idea. What a great visual way to remind the kids when things are going to happen while also supporting their emerging time-telling skills. The front of my classroom with my BFF the Smartboard. How did I ever teach without one? My reading corner. I still need to add some pillows (and perhaps a couple of Pina Coladas...) My new Word Wall inspired by all of the great circle graphics Kristen uses at Ladybug's Teacher Files. My favorite summer "makeover" project - my guided reading table. My sister helped make the table skirt (and when I say helped I really mean came to my house and sewed it while I held the fabric) and I got the ottomans on sale at Target. I'm very into teal and lime right now so I'm lovin' it! I'll post some more pics when I'm finished. I hope your school year is off to a less bumpy start than mine. Have a great night!
