Hamer people and Evangadi dance/ Gli Hamer e la danza Evangadi: questa è una bella danza a cui abbiamo partecipato, ma io sulla strada avevo curato delle brutte ferite sulla schiena di due ragazze, ecco perchè: Una delle prime etnie che incontro - racconta il nostro viaggiatore - è quella degli hamer. Circa 50.000, distribuiti in numerosi piccoli villaggi in una vasta regione stepposa oltre i confini con il Kenya. Pastori e agricoltori, dedicano gran parte del loro tempo alla ricerca del miele, uno degli alimenti principali della loro dieta. Il carattere distintivo più evidente di questo gruppo è legato alle particolarissime acconciature che ornano tanto gli uomini, quanto le donne. I capelli sono raccolti in lunghe treccine, pesantemente impomatate con un miscuglio di terra ocra e resina che conferisce alla capigliatura una tipica colorazione rossa, luminosa sotto i raggi solari. Un’altra usanza è quella di segnare i corpi con profonde cicatrici ornamentali, realizzate durante cruente cerimonie di scarnificazione. Tra gli hamer la flagellazione del corpo può spingersi fino all’estremo durante particolari rituali. In uno dei villaggi attraversati assisto a uno di questi eventi: la cerimonia che segna l’iniziazione delle ragazze alla vita adulta. La mattina, nel villaggio il clima è tranquillo e tutti i presenti, giunti anche da lontano dopo giorni di cammino, approfittano del ritrovo per discutere animatamente, mangiare miele e bere litri di una specie di birra preparata dalle donne anziane. Una bevanda blandamente alcolica, dall’odore penetrante e dal sapore discutibile. Nel pomeriggio tutto cambia. Le giovani donne protagoniste del rito, circa una dozzina, si radunano all’esterno del villaggio e iniziano a percorrere un sentiero che passa intorno alle abitazioni, procedendo a salti e intonando una nenia, ora sommessa e silenziosa, ora urlata. Gli uomini osservano. Ognuno di loro è armato con uno ramo flessibile, a mo’ di frusta. Poi il canto finisce. Ha inizio il martirio delle schiene. A turno le ragazze si avvicinano agli uomini e danno vita a un balletto rituale saltellando tutt’intorno. I due si scambiano ampi sorrisi, che non lasciano trapelare nulla di quanto succede poco dopo. All’improvviso l’uomo sferra una violentissima sferzata col suo bastone, colpendo la schiena della giovane. L’impatto produce uno schiocco rumoroso e apre una profonda ferita nella carne. Sempre saltellando e sorridendo la ragazza si allontana e torna nel gruppo delle compagne, mentre il sangue sgorga copioso dallo squarcio aperto nella pelle mogano. Altri canti. Altri saltelli. E poi un’altra frustata. E un’altra. E un’altra ancora. La schiena si riduce, a fine giornata, ad un ammasso di carne viva e pelle a brandelli. Nessuna delle ragazze sottoposte al rituale emette un grido, un lamento, o assume un’espressione di dolore. Dopo ogni colpo, semplicemente, si riprende la danza, in attesa delle frustate successive. Ogni donna hamer porta con orgoglio le cicatrici sulla schiena, a simboleggiare il passaggio ad una nuova, importante fase della vita.
