So many outstanding comics anthologies, so little quality eyeball time. But worry not: Print’s come to your rescue. Hailing from fifteen countries, the individuals participating in Eyes as Big as Plates have backgrounds as varied as their surroundings: there are zoologists, academics, and librarians; fishermen, wild boar hunters, and Sami reindeer herders; and opera singers, kantele players, and artists. They’re tethered by the ongoing project, which dresses each figure in sculptural wearables made of organic materials that allow them to blend in with the surrounding landscape. Launched in 2011 by Norwegian-Finnish artist duo Karoline Hjorth and Riitta Ikonen (previously), Eyes as Big as Plates hinges on the idea that it’s essential to explore how humans exist within nature. Los Angeles-based illustrator and storyboard artist Victo Ngai produces layered illustrations that reveal elaborate worlds filled with unexpected details. A beautiful expanse of unencumbered nature stands guarded inside a wide-mouthed bullfrog, while a seaside city burns with brilliant flames in the fabric of a heroine’s dress. Each scene inspires the viewer to pause, making sure they haven’t missed a key character that might unlock the work’s tangled narrative. Ngai is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, and provides illustrations for clients such as The New York Times and The New Yorker. More
Winged Victory, Nike of Samothrace, 190 BC. A highly detailed exact miniature of the large statue from antiquity, which is housed in the Musee du Louvre, Paris. This item is entirely handmade in England, so there are no customs charges within the EU. The marble statue represents the goddess as she descends from the skies to the triumphant Armies. Sculptured arts have been commissioned to re-create this beautiful marble Nike, exact to the full sized original. Every mark, and every chip from centuries of wear and war, has been duplicated throughout, including the restoration done over the years, including the frame on the statue’s outstretched right wing, which is a symmetric plaster version of the original left one, as it was missing along with the head and arms when unearthed in 1863. Before she lost her arms, which have never been recovered, Nike's right arm is believed to have been raised, her hand cupped round her mouth to deliver the shout of Victory. Despite its significant damage and incompleteness, the marble Victory statue is held to be one of the great surviving masterpieces of sculpture from the Hellenistic Period, and from the entire Greco-Roman era. The statue shows a mastery of form and movement which has impressed critics and artists since its discovery. It is considered one of the Louvre's greatest treasures, and since the late 19th century it has been displayed in the most dramatic fashion, at the head of the sweeping Daru staircase, within the museum. The work is notable for its convincing rendering of a pose where violent motion and sudden stillness meet, for its graceful balance and for the rendering of the figure's draped garments, compellingly depicted as if rippling in a strong sea breeze. Akiya Kageichi is a Japanese illustrator who calls himself Golden Gravel, a name which may refer to Japanese rock gardens. His sinister jesters, lazy rulers and clandestine warriors are set within scenes full of chaotic imagery. Astrological symbols, particularly moons, are heavily prominent, suggesting the mysterious forces of dark nights are at work. In a single plane, objects morph, creating dynamic and active scenes. Kageichi reveals hidden underworlds and secret futures, in which sorcery and witchcraft pull the strings and determine what happens in the real world.
