The "Chitlin' Circuit" was the name given to a lot of clubs and venues throughout the Eastern and Southern US States. They were safe for African American musicians, comedians, and entertainers to perform at during the age of Jim Crow laws forcing their segregation (ending in the 1960s). Chitlin is slang for a soul food dish made from pork. Some of the venues on the Chitlin' Circuit were the Cotton Club and Apollo Theaters in New York City, Regal Theatre in Chicago,Howard Theatre in Washington, D.C., Fox Theater in Detroit and the Uptown Theatre in Philadelphia, and a bunch of 1 night stand places in the middle. A lot of these acts played Idlewild to incorporate some relaxation along with work. Many of these fabulously talented artists started on the chitlin' circuit, including Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald,Lena Horne, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Dorothy Dandridge, Sammy Davis Jr., Ray Charles, The Supremes, Jackie Wilson at the Paradise Club Moms Mabley, Ike and Tina Turner,George Benson, B.B. King, Richard Pryor, Muddy Waters, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Redd Foxx, Patti LaBelle, Jimi Hendrix, Gladys Knight & the Pips,The Temptations, John Lee Hooker, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, The Isley Brothers, and The Four Tops. ( The dancers were love with Otis) And a Motortown Revue Dancer named Donna Dixon….I met Donna on the phone as she called into me for tech support a few years ago. It was just before the holidays and we struck up a long conversation as I fixed her computer problems. Donna was a backup dancer for the Funk Brother's band. They were the massively talented studio musicians that created the "Motown Sound" See a bit of their movie:Standing in the Shadows of Motown HERE The touring company of acts from Motown were called the Motor Town Revue.Donna told me all the gossip "on the road"with the famous groups. She also sadly told me then how Levi Stubbs had just had a large stroke and was wheel chair bound. He would never perform again. See my post about him HERE Donna told me about playing in the summers at Idlewild,Michigan's Paradise Club. This was an area of Michigan that I had never heard about and found it fascinating that there was very little information about Idlewild. Here is a little history from the book: Idlewild: The Black Eden of Michigan Once considered the most famous African-American resort communityin the country, Idlewild was referred to as the Black Eden of Michigan in the 1920s and '30s, and as the Summer Apollo of Michigan in the 1950s and '60s. Showcasing classy revues and interactive performances of some of the leading black entertainers of the period, Idlewild was an oasis in the shadows of legal segregation. Donna suggested I read a book that mentioned her and Donna's picture is in it twice! The book was written by Dr. Ronald J Stephens an acclaimed expert on African American History at several large universities. It was a fascinating hour long conversation with a woman that has lived a fascinating life in Detroit. She is still as as sparkling as her costumes were back then.

The bodice of this dress is absolutely covered in iridescent beads and sequins. The lovely deep purple satin is cut on the bias for a flattering fit. Size medium this garment measures Bust 36” Waist 32” Hips 48” The dress is shown on a mannequin measuring 39” 28” 43”. It fits well through the waist and hips but the bust is a bit too small to fit this mannequin. The cups give about an extra inch or two of ease, so a 36” or 37” bust would be ideal. Condition is good, there are some snags in the fabric on the lower portion of the skirt. The inside bust is discolored (See picture nine), but it is invisible when worn.
Tours and Weekend Keeper programs at the DeTour Reef Light are available from mid-June through August. The DeTour Reef Light Preservation Society (DRLPS) volunteers have worked since 1998 to restore and preserve the DeTour Reef Light located one mile offshore in northern Lake Huron at the far eastern end of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula between DeTour Village and Drummond Island. Built in 1931, the 83-foot tall lighthouse is a strategic and historic landmark that marks a dangerous reef to help guide ship traffic from and to Lake Huron and Lake Superior via the strategic St. Mary’s River. The DRLPS completed major restoration of the structure in 2004, and a weekend program and public tours to this unique lighthouse began in July 2005. The DRLPS received the 2005 Governor's Award for excellence in historic preservation, and the Superior Award in 2006 from the Historical Society of Michigan and the DeTour Reef Light is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2010 the DRLPS was the first volunteer group in Michigan to be designated a Preserve America Steward by First Lady Michelle Obama.
These places may be modest in appearance, but they pack a big punch in the flavor department.

This vivid blue nylon sweater from the 1960s is in excellent condition with a ton of stretch left. The square pearlescent buttons and ruffle front give it a distinctly 1960s look. Size large this garment measures Bust 37” to 44” Waist 36” to 43” Length (back collar to hem) 22” Zipper 8” Sleeve Length 7” Sleeve width 17” around at seam 11” around at cuff This sweater is shown on a mannequin measuring 39” 28” 43”. It was a decent fit, but would look better on someone a bit larger. In particular the sleeve were much too large for my mannequins 11” around the triceps arms. Condition is very good, nylon really keeps it’s shape so the sweater looks almost brand new. The only flaw is some slight discoloration on the left underarm. The last photo is the best picture I could get, the darker patch across the seam is slightly more noticeable in person but invisible when the sweater is worn.
The sleek silhouette of this late 1960s dress contrasts beautifully with the eye catching floral pattern. Made of rayon and full lined in a nylon rayon blend this dress is homemade but completely finished. Size large this garment measures Bust 40” Underbust 36” Hips 48” Length (shoulder seam to hem) 40” This dress is shown on a mannequin measuring 39” 28” 43”. It fits very well, the dress is meant to skim the body so two or three inches of ease in the bust is ideal. The darts give the extra ease not shown in the flat measurement. Condition is very good. This dress was probably homemade by a skilled dressmaker. The seams are all pinked so raveling is minimal and there are no holes or stains.
This lovely dress by Austin Reed is made of a fine wool in a rich dark purple color. The simple lines give you a number of styling options and the long sleeves will keep you toasty in cold weather. Size large this garment measures Bust 38” Waist 35 1/2” Hips 41” Length (shoulder seam to hem) 39” Sleeve Length 21 1/4” This dress is shown on a mannequin measuring 39” 28” 43”. The dress fit well, the darts in the bust and stretch of the wool fabric give a few extra inches of ease for the measurements. Condition is good. There are no stains and all the stitching is strong. The only flaws are two small moth holes, one on the side of the collar (See picture five) and one on the back shoulder (See picture six).
This 1960s nightgown is by an unusual brand Witchcraft by Carol Ann of Puerto Rico. It has a gorgeous lace overlay on the front with two satin appliqués and a pair of puffed pleated cap sleeves. Marked size medium this garment measures Bust 42” Waist full Hips 54” Length 37” The nightgown is shown on a mannequin measuring 39” 28” 43”, it’s a good fit on this mannequin though it would fit well on someone with measurements a couple of inches larger too. Condition is good. There is one small spot on an armhole where the stitching has come undone (See picture six), and two tiny brown spots on the back of the nightgown that didn’t come out when I washed it (See picture seven).

This suite by Evan-Picone features a mandarin collar and diagonal cross stitching and slightly puffed sleeves for that give it more personality than your typical suite. The jacket and skirt are both in excellent condition and should be very warm considering how thick the wool fabric is. Size small this suit measures Jacket Bust 40” Waist 40” Length (shoulder seam to hem) 19 1/4” Sleeve Length 19 1/4” Skirt Waist 27” Hips 41” Length (waistband to hem) 25” The suit is shown on a mannequin measuring 35” 26” 35”. The suite is designed to fit loosely so it worked well on this mannequin. I think any bust measurement larger than 37” or waist measurement larger than 26” would be too sung. Condition is excellent. The fabric and seams are strong and there are no holes or stains.
