The funny thing about Thanksgiving is that I don’t even eat turkey! But I do like turkey songs and activities—especially for the Kinders and First Graders. Watching them pretend to be turkeys is worth all the gobbling. Playing the steady beat in Kindergarten and developing rhythm, melody, improvisation, and composition skills in grades K-6 provides […]
Thanksgiving is coming soon. what are YOU thankful for. I, personally, am thankful that my theory teacher is at a conference and we missed two days of theory class. Ha ha! Just kidding... So here are a few Thanksgiving-oriented activities for your classes. If anyone knows the origin of this song, please let me know. To be honest, I can't remember from whom or where I learned it. The next song is obviously based on the tune of Zum Gali Gali. The change in text and the accompanying plate game I learned from my good friend, Dr. Michele Paise who is now a professor at Cumberland University in Tennessee. So all kudos for this one go to her. Thanks, Michele! Another extension could be the typical Orff idea of using word chains to create a larger rondo form. So small groups of children could create food word chains (Example: Turkey, mashed potatoes, hot biscuits, corn) to perform with body percussion and then with un-pitched percussion as small group compositions. The word chains are short, so they would have to repeat the chain at least 4 times to make it more substantial. So for instance a group could perform the chain twice with words and body percussion sounds, and then twice with only un-pitched percussion playing the rhythm of the word chain. Or they could layer in their words perhaps. One student could say and play corn over and over, then the person playing turkey could join in, then mashed potatoes, then hot biscuits. Let students be creative and come up with unique ways of performing their words chains. Don't insist that every group must do it exactly the same way. In what other subject in school can students be creative and make their own choices? The final performance would alternate singing the song with group 1 performing their word chain, then the song, then group 2 performing their word chain, and so on. Have a great week!
Preschool and Music classes can be fun and include learning skills with ideas for K-6 using turkey music and movement activities.

Ahhh.. the holidays are coming… The air is crisp, the leaves here in Massachusetts are all shades of orange, yellow, and red and most of them have made their way to the ground already! With all the excitement, I know my first graders always needed high engagement. Anything that could keep my students […]
Usually I don't post 2 days in a row but this was too good to pass up sharing and it is time sensitive in light of Thanksgiving next week. ...
Ah, Fall... the leaves are changing colors, the air is getting cooler, the coffees are infused with pumpkin spice... It's a nice time of year. I'm linking up with my blog tribe to share some of my favorite fall lessons! I am lucky enough to teach in a school that is very pro-Halloween. We have a huge costume parade and every class throws a party. It's easily one of my favorite days of the school year. So I have lots of fun doing Halloween songs along with other seasonal songs this time of year. I'll share some great things I've found to do with each grade level... Pre-K Our Pre-K students just learned the letter "M" in their classroom, so I decided to reinforce that literacy component with a fun movement activity called, "Monsters Stomp Around the House." This is a piggyback song to the tune of, "The Ants Go Marching" which we are going to be learning later in the year. Now that they've heard the melody in this song, it should be more familiar to them when we get to it! Kindergarten I learned this song in college and love doing it with my primaries: To trace the melodic contour, I use foam leaves that I bought at a craft store a few years ago. You could also use scarves or paper cutouts for the same effect. 1st Grade Another favorite song that I learned in college is a piggyback song to the tune of "The Muffin Man." This one is called "The Pumpkin Child." Oh, do you know the pumpkin child? The pumpkin child, the pumpkin child! Do you know the pumpkin child Who goes to [ school name]? I start the lesson by telling my students a story of a day when a little pumpkin came to the school and he went to different teachers in the building and asked them if they knew the pumpkin child. Each time I mention a new teacher, we sing the song again. By the time I've finished the story, they've had at least six or seven repetitions of the song and can sing it independently. Then we play a beat passing game and pass a pumpkin around the circle. Whoever the pumpkin lands on is the pumpkin child! I let the pumpkin child pick a movement (pat, clap, snap, etc.) for us to use to keep the steady beat. 2nd Grade I LOVE the book "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything" But do you know what I love even more than the book? This great video that has the story set to a song! I had my students sing along and then act out each part. After singing the song, I bring out the book and we add instruments for each part as well. 3rd-5th Grade For my intermediate students, I've found a couple of fun activities on Pinterest that I use... The kids love reading the notation for Ghost of John in this shape! And we sing it in a two or three part round. I'm excited to try this cup passing game next week. I also do a contest with The Addams Family Song... since music class is a place where we practice performing and stage presence, I challenge them to sing the song like Wednesday Addams: with a frown the whole time and NO SMILING. There is nothing funnier than watching a bunch of kids try their hardest NOT to smile!!! I hope you enjoy these Falloween (as my second graders called it) activities. PLUCK THE TURKEY! This is a Thanksgiving Hangman and a great way to get pre-teens and teens involved in the day's activities. You have to use words that have to do with this specific holiday. (OK...you don't have to, but it's definitely more fun!) Instead of slowly hanging a stick figure, you will be plucking the turkey. If you guess the word before all your feathers are gone... YOU WIN! If NOT...You're the Thanksgiving Dinner! Above is a picture of the word card. This page is laminated so that dry erase markers can be used. Here's the Plucked Turkey: Here are His Feathers: The Game Also Comes With An Instruction Card: The PDF prints out to be an 11"x17" so it can be used in larger groups. I also did a smaller version so that you can print it from home. Here is the 11"x 17" PDF file: Pluck the Turkey Here's the 8"x 10" PDF: Pluck the Turkey Good Luck!
I really like this song because I get a chance to talk with students about "call and response" songs and can introduce improvisation.
