Wow! The last three days have been so much fun with all of the freebies from the Jackpot, plus shopping till I couldn't shop any longer during the TPT sale...I think I'm going through a little bit of shopping withdrawal today. Which means, I just might have added a few more things to my wishlist after seeing all the goodies everyone else bought! This week, we've been continuing our oceans unit, and my kiddos are really enjoying their time as marine biologists! After studying different types of marine biologists on this really cool website, my students filled out job applications to become marine biologists (and to pick their animal to study). Then, we put on our pinterest-inspired scuba gear and dove into our research! We took trips to the library and to the computer lab to do some researching on PebbleGo, and the kids have been working on their All About Books the last few days. Hopefully we'll get them published early next week--Time seems to be rushing by and we've still got so much to do! Yikes! Another oceans activity that went well this week was a quick sink or float experiment that seemed to really amaze my class. I got the idea for it a few years ago here, and I just updated the graphic organizer to go along with it. Click the picture to download it for FREE:). All you need to do is prepare two bowls of water--one fresh and one very salty. Then, have the students place the items in the bowls and record if they sink or float. My kiddos were all amazed to see that the crayon sunk in the fresh water and floated in the salt. The starburst was also a tricky one. It floated for a bit in the saltwater, then it sunk! Well, I'm off to bed early because tomorrow is my second-to-last day of 6:40am bus duty! Have a good one!

Inspired by my previous post, I have created a series of 6 doodle sheets that are free to download. I have produced them at A5 size (though they could be made smaller or larger if you choose) and they can either be printed off and used as they come, or trimmed and laminated to make re-usable doodle sheets, as illustrated here. If laminated, they should be used with special dry-wipe pens to allow them to be wiped clean. I also punched a hole in the corner of each sheet and tied them together using a keyring so that I could carry them about more easily. You are free to use these however you choose (except commercially of course!) However if you do wish to use them, please consider making a small donation to help support my personal blog. You can do this by clicking on the button below, or by using the Ko-Fi widget in the sidebar. To get your doodle sheets just click on the each image to open up the full size image, then right click to download a copy. I wanted to find a new self portrait project for the first week of school this year. I saw some inspiration on pinterest, but there were no directions on how to create it. So I took the best from the pics I saw and tried to recreate it my style. I used my 5 year old to practice this before my 3rd graders start this year. Here's how I did it... Step 1: Take a photo of your student as they stand so you get their Profile shot. Step 2: Airdrop or send the photo to your computer and print it out on a regular black/white printer on plain white paper. Then take a thin tipped black marker or sharpie and trace the outline. Step 3: Fill in the profile with a black marker. I used a black crayola marker, but I'm sure any black marker or crayon will do. You can stop below the neck or go all the way to the bottom of the picture. Step 4: Cut out the black very carefully. Step 5: Glue it onto blank white paper or cardstock . Step 6: Take a black pen or pencil and a ruler and draw straight lines to separate the background into sections. Step 7: Design as you wish. I'm going to have my students choose things all about them. It could be words to describe them, favorite things they enjoy...and filled with pictures and words to show them. I like the idea of the name only being on the back, so when parents come in they can guess which one is their child. So that's it! I plan to back these on black paper and hang in my classroom. Hope they all turn out great. I think this might be my new favorite back to school portrait art project!! If you like it or plan to use it, I'd love to see your pics and comments too!
What a CRAZY week and weekend!!! We are finished with our state testing and school fair. Yahoo!!! This past week consisted of finishing up state testing, teaching students a dance for the fair performance, painting a picture for the fair silent auction, (see picture below), making over 50 candy apples for the sweets booth, and practicing for the teacher fair performance! Yes, I am one of 11 teachers who actually dances in front of the parents and students at the fair!!! I think the best part of dancing would be attending all practices after school!!! enjoying the fair candy apples for the sweet booth silent auction: each student painted a different picture on the canvas End-of-the-Year Linky Party With state testing & the fair behind me, I can start preparing for the end of the year. I am linking up with Clutter-Free Classroom and sharing my end-of-the-year ideas. I can't believe May is right around the corner!! Where did the school year go? I still need to put together portfolios and make a power point presentation. I love making a power point from all of the pictures I take during the school year. I must admit that it takes over a week to construct because I always find a way to mess up something! It never fails that every year I make some kind of mistake!!! For the portfolios, I save the students' work all year and use sheet protectors in binders. I like to put the work in order from the first to last day for the parents. I put all work in sheet protectors. The parents appreciate the organization of the work so much because it saves them the time of doing it over the summer. Also, students complete a summer writing activity. This writing activity is my favorite one of the year. The creativity that flows from the students' brains is amazing! Students are asked to write about a summer trip they have taken already or plan on taking. After editing the rough draft, students write the final copy of the essay on sunglasses. Students glue glasses on large white construction paper and draw a picture around the glasses. I was amazed the first time I did this with my class. I did not instruct them to draw a person. The end results were more than I imagined! summer writing summer writing end-of-the-year presentation set up Click (HERE) to grab your sunglasses template. What a post! Please check out Clutter-Free Classroom Project and join the End-of-the-Year Linky Party! With much appreciation,

Hey team! After a busy two days, things are starting to come together! I have been putting a few things up on my walls and started setting up the whiteboard layout. Thankfully I've had help from an amazing friend who is reallllly good at taping straight lines. Turns out that is not one of my strengths! Here are my colour posters: (also available in english and spanish) I have a 1/2 combined class this year, so it has been tricky navigating the space that I have on my walls. Above is the bulletin board by the carpet, split in half to give a space for each grade. Here is my daily schedule space: And the birthday wall: (also available in english and bilingual) I just need to get my class list so that I can get it all set up with their birthdays! I've laminated them and I am going to write on them with wet erase pens. Hope you are all enjoying the craziness of the last few days before school starts :)

Woot woot! This post was featured on the TpT blog! You can see it here. Never underestimate the importance of teaching routines. In every classroom and every grade level... but ESPECIALLY in Kindergaten. And in Kindergarten,
At the beginning of the year, while I was waiting to see what interests started popping up for Inquiries, we spent time getting to know each other and building our community! Of course, we read books to get us thinking. Here is one the kids loved that talked about how our facial features are different. I passed out mirrors and the kids all looked closely at themselves. We discussed how our faces had different shapes. Our eyes had a color, but also a shape! Same with our noses! We all made a blackline sketch of our faces to show how we saw ourselves in the mirror. The next day, we had a discussion about what practice means. They did a beautiful job for a first try, but if they did it again, do they think they would do better, worse, or the same? They all felt they would do better! We discussed that practice helps us get better! So we tried again and they felt that their second try was even better than the first. The next day we read The Color of Us. It is one of my favorites! The names used to describe the different colors of people are beautiful! During our exploration time, the kids took turns matching water color paint to their skin tone and painting the skin on their second self portrait. During this process, they learned how to paint with watercolor by rubbing the brush against the side to get rid of the drips and taking care of our water colors by washing their brush after each color. After it dried, they painted their eyes, mouth and hair. I always love these self portraits! They dictated to us what their biggest goal was for them to be able to do be the end of Kindergarten and we wrote their goal on their self portrait. Here are some of their goals: "I want to learn how to grow big muscles." "I want to learn how to write my name correctly." Here is one of my favorites: Here is the display of their work: Next, they want to create a friendship painting using their handprints inspired by one my kids made last year that is dislayed in the hallway! I can't wait to see how they make it their own!
