They don't call it Bridge City for nuthin'... This is the Rainbow Bridge, which is one of three ways to get across the Neches River within at least fifty miles of the Gulf. If you're one of the people afflicted with a fear of tall bridges, I'd recommend the crossing north of Beaumont, where the crossing is practically flat. This bridge was designed to clear the mast of the tallest Navy ship of the day - the USS Patoka - a tender ship for the rigid airship "Shenandoah". Not surprisingly, the Patoka never passed through, as it turns out dirigibles had a tendency to burst into flames as airships fell out of favor for a number of reasons... I was corrected by an "airship nut" in the comments below, which I always appreciate. The Neches River is a deep-water channel all the way inland to Beaumont. An incredible number of oil tankers pass under this bridge and it's sister bridge, the Veteran's Memorial Bridge just to the left of this one. For 70 years or so, this was a two-way bridge, and took the lives of at least three or four people a year because of traffic accidents - and the occasional jumper. The most common cause of death was when people would pass slower traffic (probably terrified drivers..) on the uphill side of the bridge near the top, where it was impossible to see oncoming traffic. It was a tragic combination of fear and stupidity on the part of those who had lost their fear of heights and their patience. It was always a head-on collision, and almost always fatal. For those interested in the technical details - look here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Bridge_(Texas) Click on this link to the site that describes the ship this bridge was designed to clear - the USS Patoka - interesting reading if you're into old ships and airships - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Patoka_(AO-9)
