Most of you have heard or read about Swedish illustrator Gustaf Tenggren. He was hired by Disney in 1936 to help develop the art direction for short films like The Ugly Duckling and The Old Mill. He was very influential on Disney's early feature films as well such as Snow White and Pinocchio. Recently Heritage Auctions offered some of Tenggren's non Disney original artwork. The late Arthur Rackham and Kay Nielsen were among his contemporaries. Stunning work! In the painting below there is a cloud in the shape of a hand, holding the moon. That idea ended up in Disney's Ichabod Crane film version. For much more on Gustaf Tenggren, go here: http://gustaftenggren.blogspot.com

Gustaf Tenggren, born in Sweden, and emigrated to the US, was a prolific illustrator of children's books. He had a unique, vivid, caricature style. Tenggren got his big break in 1935, when he was hired as art director for Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. He also worked on Pinocchio, Fantasia and Bambi. He is one of the most popular of Golden Books illustrators and did the Poky Little Puppy. Here are some images I particularly like. These two are from a Golden Press Folk Songs book. Here are two from The Lion's Paw: And here are some Golden Book classics, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack in the Beanstalk. I love Tenggren's Jack! I always enjoy finding a Tenggren book when I'm out hunting.

It was long known that Gustaf Tenggren spent time in Copenhagen in 1919 before he left for USA in July 1920. He had a commission for E. Jespersen's Publishing Company to make 32 illustrations fro Grimm's Fairy Tales. They were completed in 1920 and published in Denmark in 1923. Also in 1919, he painted a portrait of the daughter of publisher Halfdan Jespersen. The rest of his doings in Denmark that year has been benighted - until now. Thanks to the illustrious Jules Verne Society in Denmark (Det Danske Jules Verne-selskab) and their fabulous website, 10 more titles has been added to Tenggren's row of book commissions. They were published in 1922 and contains a total of 59 black-and-white drawings, plus possibly some covers in full color. Most of the covers were reused from the previous editions but two (20,000 leagues under the sea and The children of captain Grant) were new and might have been painted by Tenggren. Cover for Illustration for 20,000 leagues under the sea, Jespersen's forlag 1922 Illustration for 20,000 leagues under the sea. Illustration for 20,000 leagues under the sea. I got on track when I read a letter from Gustaf Tenggren to a publisher, listing his illustrated work and mentioning these early illustrations. The 10 books had already been published in several illustrated editions before, but Tenggren was hired to re-draw the original french illustrations, perhaps of printing technical reasons. Despite his youth, being only 23 years at the time, he managed to produce a nice row of drawings, obviously without exceeding his very talented predecessors. None of the illustrations are signed, which is very unlike Tenggren. Maybe that is the reason these illustrations has been relatively unknown until now.
