“This is a marvelous, brilliant, un-put-down-able book that swings between dark whimsy and harrowing bleakness with dexterity and skill. At the very end of the grimy ...”
3935. On the afternoon of the birthday party Harriet’s sister Clara came for a visit and to have tea, and to give her sister her birthday presents in advance, before the other guests arrived. We have spent so much time talking about Emily and her tutor that I think I should remind you about Harriet’s sister, and her peculiar situation. 3936. The sister, Clara was one of those persons who find religion at a certain point in their lives. Having discovered religion, it takes over their mind completely and they begin to try to convert their friends and neighbors to their new found ideas. 3937. You know quite well that I, personally, was suspicious of Clara’s convictions and I harbor the notion that she has become devoted to the church simply to escape from the claustrophobic atmosphere of her house. I have already mentioned before that the trips to her Bible study group were just a screen to give her a little freedom from tending for her dying husband. 3938. You might think that if Clara’s so called religion was just an excuse to get her out of the house, she might be luke-warm about the convictions of others, but in her situation the opposite was the case. She felt it was necessary to convert others, and the weaker her faith was, the stronger was her need to preach to her friends and relations.

_______________ 'The Morville Hours is the most beautiful book I have read in years' - Nigel Slater 'A truly remarkable book that is both intimate and universal. We are left with a renewed sense of what it is to be human' - Daily Telegraph 'This is gardening writing at its best. Swift's prose brings the garden alive in all its details, scents and meaning ... Evocative, heartfelt and magical' - Guardian _______________ In 1988 Katherine Swift arrived at the Dower House at Morville to create a garden of her own. This beautifully written, utterly absorbing book is the history of the many people who have lived in the same Shropshire house, tending the same soil, passing down stories over the generations. Spanning thousands of years, The Morville Hours takes the form of a medieval Book of Hours. It is a meditative journey through the seasons, but also a journey of self-exploration. It is a book about finding one's place in the world and putting down roots.

The 18th of June was a very sad day for us at our home, as it marked the passing of a beloved heroine and inspirational figure, Ms. Tasha Tudor. Though famous as a children's book illustrator and author, I loved the books that Tovah Martin wrote about her lifestyle, and the beautiful pictures by Richard Brown. What a lovely, inspiring, gentle life, and what wit and wisdom she displayed! Although we never met her personally, we sense a great loss, knowing that her candle has gone out. Certainly Heaven has a new star, and will be made brighter for it. Goodbye, dear friend!

Brie joins us today from her home and foodscaped garden in North Carolina to share more, including her incredible enthusiasm. Brie is all about the creed of the 4
Before Europeans first arrived in Asia, China was one of the most advanced and powerful nations in the world. It was the most populous, was politically unified, and most importantly, it had mastered the art of agriculture. However, when Europeans first landed on Chinese shores, they found a nation that had revered to traditional culture and warfare. Industrialization was almost nonexistent. At the beginning of the 20th century, China was divided into sphere of influence with each powerful Western nation trying to exert as much control over it as possible. The Chinese resented foreigners control and expressed this at the beginning of the 20th century with the Boxer Rebellion. At the same time, the traditional government of China began to fail in the early years. The Chinese people, being resentful of foreigners and dissatisfied with inability of the present government to throw them out, initiated the Revolution of 1911, replacing the Chinese 2000 year old imperial system with the Republic of China headed by Sun Yat-sen.
