There are six levels of validation in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which promote an environment where people feel accepted and understood. As much as possible, we should use the highest level of validation in any given situation. The first level is about showing interest and being present while the sixth level is radical genuineness. The DBT 6 Levels Of Validation worksheet asks clients to engage in reflection and describe a scenario where validation would be helpful. For each level of validation, they can brainstorm ways to show support to a friend or loved one going through a difficult experience. Kids and teens answering the worksheet can practice articulating their responses, which helps them develop their communication skills and have healthier relationships. Feel free to pair this worksheet with our DBT 6 Levels of Validation handout which serves as a practical resource on the topic. *This item is an instant digital download. Journaling improves a child’s self-esteem by allowing them to reflect on their positive behaviors, lessons learned, and personal goals. This daily self-esteem journal is a therapeutic tool that lets kids rate their self-esteem on a scale of 1-10 and answer questions like, “A kind thing I did today was…” and “Something I learned today was…” The key is to give them the opportunity to spend time thinking of things that will make them feel good about themselves. This journal can be used by parents, teachers, social workers, and mental health professionals when working with children. *This item is an instant digital download. Thinking errors, also known as cognitive distortions, are irrational beliefs that contribute to uncomfortable emotions and unwanted behavior. They are often discussed in both DBT and CBT. Research shows that certain types of distorted thinking can lead to increased anxiety and depressive symptoms. The sooner you become aware of these distortions and address them, the less likely they can influence your perceptions and decision-making processes. The DBT Thinking Errors PDF handout outlines 10 patterns of distorted thinking, and each includes a specific example to illustrate how it manifests in a client’s everyday thoughts. For instance, the thinking error Blaming might include the thought, “The only reason I got an F is because of the teacher.” For kids and teens undergoing therapy, this handout can help them question their assumptions, especially when these are causing conflicts in their relationships. After learning about thinking errors, they can keep a thought log where they can jot down their thoughts and check if these thoughts are based on facts or opinions. This handout is specifically designed to be used with other DBT resources, but we also offer CBT versions with the title Cognitive Distortions or Thinking Errors. You can find additional unique product designs in our Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTS), Thinking Traps, Negative Thinking Patterns, or Unhelpful Thinking Styles posters. *This item is an instant digital download. Radical acceptance coping statements serve as affirmations to accept reality as it is. Since they offer important reminders during times of distress, repeating them allows a person to have a more optimistic perspective. These statements are often used in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). The Radical Acceptance Coping Statements Worksheet includes positive coping statements, such as “I can’t change what has already happened,” and “I can feel anxious and still deal with this situation effectively.” It also includes three empty thought bubbles for clients to write down their own coping statements to increase acceptance of a situation. As young people reflect on the statements on the worksheet, they can have an increased awareness of their stress response and explore coping skills. Users are encouraged to keep the worksheet in a visible place as a helpful daily reminder. It’s okay to revise coping statements from time to time so they remain relevant. This worksheet can be added to our Radical Acceptance Coping Statements handout to explore more positive coping statements. *This item is an instant digital download.
