My favorite part about getting ready for back to school is getting all of the bulletin boards set up around my classroom. Here are some of my favorite ideas.

Do you have one of these bulletin boards in your classroom? Last year was my first year putting a "While You Were Out" board in my room, and let me tell you... life changing!! I am the WORST at keeping track of the kids that are absent each day and reminding them to make up the work they missed. But, having this in the room takes the responsibility from me and gives it right to my students. I spend about 15 minutes on the first day of school talking to the kids about responsibility and how this board works. I also make sure to showcase this board to my parents on Back to School night. Want to make one for your classroom? The title letters and days of the week can be found for free right here. I just used some plain file folders that I covered in contact paper, some black butcher paper, cheap border, and tissue paper pom poms (which you can buy or make yourself if you're feeling crafty!). I'm telling you, you NEED this bulletin board in your classroom!! Seriously, life changing. Seriously. Not even kidding. Happy back to school!!

I do a Classroom Guidance lesson at the beginning of the year with each of the 3 classes I'm in charge of; 8th, 9th, and 10th. During this lesson I go over what my main responsibilities are as a School Counselor; scheduling, testing, and counseling. When I talk about counseling with my students I always go into what are the three things that I have to report. I find it is a good way to open the door to that conversation, it also allows me to remind students of that conversation if and/or when they come down to talk to me. "Remember when I was in your classroom at the beginning of the year and I told you there were three things that I have to report?" Then I go into my conversation about our two types of diplomas, credits, verified credits, yadda yadda. It's amazing how many times you can over something and students still forget. I also give each student an "information sheet" to fill out and give back to me. My goal is to meet with each student individually to talk about what they want to take class wise, career wise, college wise, etc. During that time I find it will be helpful for me to have their information sheets to help me guide them. It also has some information to allow me to pick out students who might be in need of a little more attention counseling wise. Below is the information sheet. Before I finish my lesson, I give each student a checklist. I created these checklists, but I added them below to share with you :) I tell students that whether they are college bound or not, these sheets will help them graduate.

I am incorporating many of the amazing ideas that I have come across on Pinterest and this is one of them. It's a missing assignment form, which you have students turn in when they do not have an assignment. I thought it would make it much easier to keep track of those who did not do something versus those who are absent. So here it is!

The ability to inquire lays a strong foundation for meaningful education and helps bring mindfulness to the learning process. Added awareness of what you know, where you lag, and classroom session outcomes boost cognition in the overall learning methods. I think we can all agree that if you are a teacher, you will occasionally come home stressed out, right? There are a variety of reasons for the stress. If the reason is due to a student with behavior problems I have a tip for you. You know the Oprah shows with Dr. Phil when he is talking to a guest and he says "how's that working for you?" When I find myself stressed out about a student and his/her behavior which is affecting the delivery of my instruction and the chemistry of my class, I ask myself "how's that working for me?" I write down the strategies that I have been using. Then I look at why those strategies don't work with this student. The next thing that I do is take careful documentation. I need to know what day and time of day the behavior is worse. Once I can see a pattern I can investigate to see why some days or times are better than others. Is Thursday morning a bad day? Maybe the student had an extracurricular activity the night before that caused the him/her to go to bed later than normal. Tired and cranky students are not at their best in the classroom. The behavior form below is a quick and easy form to use. Choose two target behaviors such as keep hands to himself/herself when lining up and blurts out during circle time lessons. Put a tally mark to document the number of reminders you give the student to keep hands to him/herself or about blurting. Click HERE to download this freebie. Looking for more tips?
