Fourth Grade artists are busy finishing up their Radial Design sewing. Students have learned at least five different kinds of stitches: running, straight, cross, satin, as well as decorated or fancy running stitch. Students designed their work to have a symmetrical balance, and a few have radial balance, which is two or more lines of symmetry. We are sewing into burlap, which is loosely woven, and makes it a little easier to line up the design because of the grid-like pattern the fibers have. These will be on display for our School-wide Student Art Show in April!
Hurray! We are back in school and back to making music! This week my students learned how to do the newspaper dance. We started with a section of the paper, unfolding it and laying it flat. This was our "dance floor". Students then could dance in their space. Before we started, each group decided what they considered to be "dancing". Most groups said that to be dancing you had to move your arms and legs in some fashion. And so the dancing began... Now, as fun as that was...it was just getting started. Next, we stepped off the newspaper and folded it in half and stepped on again. After a while, students had to move in very creative ways to stay on the newspaper. We had a great time defining "dance", practing making the fraction 1/2 and movin' and groovin' to some great tunes. With older students we created math sentences like "We are standing in 1/8th of the space that we started on." Some of my favorite tunes to use with this activity: "I Like to Move It" by Crazy Frog "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" by John Denver "Get Jiggy Wit It" by Will Smith "Happy" by Pharrell Williams "Best Years of Our Lives" by Baha Men "The Twist" by Chubby Checker "Goofy Goober Rock" by Spongebob "Walk Like an Egyptian" by the Bangles "Everything is AWESOME" from the Lego Movie "Boot Scootin' Boogie" by Brooks and Dunn Are you looking for movement ideas for that first week of school? How about ribbon dancing? You can create really inexpensive ribbons or streamers with plastic table cloths and pencils (or chopsticks or dowel rods or something of similar size. Check out THIS blog post to learn how to make them. Then check out these: This collection includes cards with pictures and cards with word prompts to use with your students. Pass out your scarves, ribbons or streamers and start the music. Then hold up the cards and let students choose how to interpret them. I also love to use other sets of movement cards that don't always have one correct way of being interpreted. I have used the reading workshop model for about 8 years now. It has changed a lot over the years! One thing that has stayed the same is the ‘Respond to Text’ station. This is a time where students get to write about their reading. The station stays the same all year, but the activities in the station change. Below is a list of activities you can add to your ‘Respond to Text’ station at the beginning of the year. 1. Bookmark Book Report At the beginning of the year, some students struggle to finish chapter books. I find that this bookmark book report helps them stay engaged in their reading. The students keep track of the pages they read, and complete activities as they read their book. There is a fiction and nonfiction version available for download. 2. Text Structures Tri-fold Students can use this trifold to ‘hunt’ for different text structures. Just put a basket of nonfiction books at the station and you are set! It’s a great way to get them reading nonfiction books. 3. Choice Board Students get to choose what activities they’d like to complete. This is great because it can be used for the story of the week (if you follow a basal) or the chapter book they are currently reading. You can have the students glue this page inside their reading notebook, or have them staple their responses to this sheet and turn in. Howdy! I'm officially on spring break and it came at the perfect time. Here in good ol' Kansas this week we will be having highs in the 70's...pefect flip-flop weather! Winning!!!! So...this afternoon I have to trudge down to my basement and find all my spring and summer clothes and so the switching out of the winner clothes begins. :) We are getting ready to begin a unit on shapes which is why I made this book for my kiddos to work on during math workshop. The shapes included in the book are a cone, cube, sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism, and pryamid. They cut out the shapes and paste them on the correct page. Then they write a sentence about the shape. This file is for sale in my TpT shop for here. These are super easy and fast to make. I copy the pages front-to-back and set the copier to staple twice on the left side. Then I can cut them in half with the paper cutter and the booklets will already be stapled and put together! This book goes perfectly with my 3-D Shapes Poster Pack...check it out here! I left my jump drive at school, but luckily its open all week so I'm going to swing by tomorrow and get it so I can share a freebie with you all tomorrow! It's a worksheet to review edges, faces, and vertices of 3-D shapes. \
'Tis the season to administer the VB-MAPP! Not only is it the time of year for all those fun holidays, it is also the time for assessing our students and their skills. By now, we should have an idea of where our kiddos are and what will motivate them to participate in the assessment. Complete those VB-MAPPs by Thanksgiving break and then re-administer at the end of the year before summer... and be amazed at all the progress! This is the FUN part of taking data! I plan on posting data sheets for each section of the VB-MAPP (as needed) over the next few weeks as I finish up testing my students. We have been working hard to learn our names! I have a helper of the day. So we cycle through everyone during the month. The first time we did King and Queen. Each person was the king or queen of the day. They got to wear a crown and cape. The crown was a paper one that they took home at the end of the day. We made a web of all their favorite things. We practiced asking and answering questions. Then everyone made a page for their book. So fun and cute. I took pictures of them all in the cape and crown for the cover. As we did this we added their name to the word wall. The second time through we did a name chart. We added names to this according to their first letter of their name. I did the first letter and different color than the rest so that they could really see their beginning letter. I put a box around all the ones that began with the same letter. Picture coming soon. The third time through did this graph. I cut 3 inch strips of cardstock. I made this chart. Everyday I had the helper come up to the front of the class and I wrote their name on a strip of their choice. Then I cut it up. Letter by letter. They would say "Oh No, It's broken" Then the helper would pick up the pieces and we glued them back together on the chart. I would then pick some names on the chart and we would compare ....Whose name had fewer and more letters than theirs. It really got them talking about their names more and the letters in them. Next time through we will be making "My book of Friends" The kids will actually cut up each name and glue it together to make a book of friends. Picture coming soon!
