I love puzzles and I was always one of those people who loved having a puzzle on the table to work on little by little. Somehow over the years, we've gotten out of the habit of puzzle solving. We don't even really do many puzzles with the kids, which makes me sad. I think there

This was a collaborative project I did with one of the Science teachers at my school. He was teaching his kids about food chains and wanted an art project to go along with it. He found THIS image via Pinterest as initial inspiration for the project. UPDATE: The poster was designed by art director and illustrator Dhanashri Ubhayakar for the magazine Sanctuary Asia, an Indian nature and wildlife conservation magazine. I turned the digital image into a collage project using construction paper. I used 12 x 18" construction paper. Have a background colour (in my case, turquoise). Then start with your largest animal (the top predator, I guess... the Science teacher explained this part to the kids, heh, heh) I folded my paper vertically so I only had to draw half the polar bear and it also made it symmetrical. I collaged on the eyes, nose and teeth from scraps of paper. Then make all the other animals slightly smaller... My messy workspace below.... Ok- once you have all the animals (our students were required to have 3 animals plus a plant) it's time to layer them and glue it all together. This took some fiddling and such, but I found it easiest to lay it all out and then start from gluing the smallest middle part first (the plant- I lost my mini tree) and work your way up. I used dots of white glue. It went faster than using a glue stick. Grade 7 student results!

What happens when a great book, creative task cards and engaging doodle notes combine? A Doodle and Do resource, of course! This Doodle and Do resource is designed for students to complete after reading the novel, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. It combines fun task cards with doodle notes. The task cards require students to write, chat, swap, and draw in response to questions about the book. Then, students add their responses to fun doodle notes for the novel. This resource will have your students evaluating the text, connecting to the novel, summarizing critical elements in the book, and working creatively and collaboratively every step of the way! About the task cards: There are four different types of task cards in this resource (12 cards in all). The task cards are super unique because they encourage students to respond and react to the text in really creative ways. When students pick the “WRITE” task cards, they respond in writing on their Doodle Notes. The “CHAT” task cards encourage discussions before students jot down the conversation highlights on their Doodle Notes. Of course, there’s a set of “DRAW” task cards! Students will create doodles and sketches on their notes in response to the draw cards. And…just to make things super fun and engaging, there’s a set of “SWAP” cards. When students pick a swap card, they’ll switch their Doodle Notes with a classmate and respond to the task card on one another’s papers! The creative task cards are not only fun, they also require students to truly reflect on the novel in meaningful ways! About the doodle notes: Just the format of Doodle Notes makes learning instantly more engaging! This resource includes 2 pages of Doodle Notes. The notes are filled with shapes and doodle sketches where students will add their responses to the task card questions. Students will write in lockers and on a chalkboard, add discussion highlights in thought bubbles, and doodle in fun shapes. The end result is a set of Doodle Notes that are not only fun to look at, but filled with students’ understandings of the book! How to use this resource: The coolest part about this resource is that it’s super versatile. There are many ways to incorporate the task cards and Doodle Notes into your classroom… WHOLE CLASS: Just copy a single set of the task cards and have students work as class to respond to each task card on their Doodle Notes one task card at a time. SMALL GROUPS: Divide students into small groups and let them work together to progress through each of the task cards while they complete their Doodle Notes. LEARNING STATIONS: Set up learning stations for each type of task card. Then, have students rotate around the classroom as they fulfill the tasks at each station. Included in this Doodle and Do resource: • Teacher Overview • Teaching Ideas – Detailed instructions for 3 teaching options • How to Complete the Doodle Notes • Student Directions for the Task Cards and Doodle Notes • 4 Learning Station Cards (in case you choose to do learning stations in your classroom) • 12 Task Cards for the novel (3 chat cards, 3 write cards, 3 draw cards, 3 swap cards) • 2 pages of Doodle Notes Other Doodle and Do Resources… Figurative Language Unit - Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Hyperbole, Onomatopoeia, Alliteration Doodle and Do Reading Skills bundle! - Making Inferences, Finding the Main Idea, Fact & Opinion, Sequencing, and Summarizing 5 Nonfiction Text Structure Mini-Units - Problem/Solution, Compare and Contrast, Descriptive, Chronological Order, and Cause and Effect How to Study for a Test Doodle Notes and 5 Learning Stations Writing Responses with Text-Based Evidence Doodle Notes and 5 Learning Stations Poet and Poem Study - Maya Angelou You may also like: File Folder Book Project - Any book! Hello Everyone!! My apologies for not posting in a while. We have been so busy both at school and on the homefront. We had some major events to attend and my baby moved to Austin to start his first real job. Needless to say...emotional rollercoaster!!! At school we celebrated the 100th day of school, Valentines Day, and Presidents Day. All were a huge success. Here are a couple of pics! 100th day balloon launch!! Over the past couple of weeks we've been working so hard on our expository writing. We are writing an "All About Me" book with about 5 chapters. They are turning out so great!! I don't have pics yet, bu I will soon. This coming week we will begin our "How to Writing." We have a kind of hat theme going on for our open house, so I wanted to include a hat idea in our writing, so I've added a "How to Make a Newspaper Hat" component. I will show the kids how to make this fun little hat, and then let them get busy making their own and writing their "How To's." The unit I'm sharing today include templates, brainstorming sheets, and publishing ideas for a generic "How To" plus some specific "How To's" including "How To Eat An Oreo," and "How to Make a Newspaper Hat." For your own 40 page unit CLICK HERE! :) I am so excited to show the kids how they can teach someone how to do something! I know they will love the hats! I can't wait to show you some pics of them in the process. Till then, have a wonderfilled rest of the weekend! As always, thanks for stopping by and taking a peek through our window of wonder!! Don't forget to leave a comment!! Joyfully! Nancy
