'What Is Happening At the Park?' is an adapted and interactive book , which targets the action verbs swinging, crawling, digging, climbing, riding, flying, sliding, blowing, looking and jumping . Students can also determine the pronoun and object within each image. Students will learn to label actions, verbalise SVO sentences and extend their sentences. Designed for Special education, Students with Autism, Speech Therapy, Early Intervention or Early Childhood Classrooms. The book features 10 pages , each with its own real life photograph of a child completing an action at the park. Underneath the image is the corresponding sentence segments with spaces for the student to select the correct visuals for 'who' (Pronoun), 'doing' (action verb) and 'what' (noun). Each section of the sentence is colour coded to allow the student to identify which visuals go where e.g. verbs are blue and are placed in the blue 'doing' box (see preview). Students select the correct visuals from an array determined by the teacher/therapist and placed on page 9 using Velcro. This page is to remain at full size while other pages are trimmed in half. This will allow the visuals to be visible as the student works. Visuals on page 9 will need to be changed every few pages. Only a small array should be visible at one time to avoid overwhelming the student with choices. Visuals have been created using Smarty Symbols . Smarty Symbols are specifically designed to be easily interpreted and used by students with special needs such as autism. To prepare the book simply trim pages 1-8 in half and laminate. Place soft Velcro on the who/doing/what boxes on each page and the Velcro here strips on pages 7-8. Laminate page 9 whole and place soft Velcro on the strips. Bind Pages 1-9 together on the top edge (page 9 should be visible at all times). Cut and laminate the visuals on pages 10-11 and place hard Velcro on the back of them. These can now be stored on pages 7-8 and placed on page 9 when in use. Please see preview and video for clarification. Interactive books for preschoolers are a great way to get them involved in a book in meaningful ways. Since social emotional learning in preschool is key, I created this wonderful "I Can" interactive book. Preschool children will learn important concepts about what it means to be responsible. This colorful interactive book for kids gets them reflecting on how they can and do contribute each day to their own homes and families. All you need to do to prep the interactive preschool book is print, cut out the cards, and laminate for durability. Your child will likely want to go through it again and again!

Adapted books are one of my favorite ways to teach new skills. They are fun and interactive. During the session they keep my students focused and engaged. I love using them with my students to teach them how to answer who and what questions. I am going to go through how I use my adaptive who and what books with my students. Subscribe Vocabulary The first skill I use these book to teach is vocabulary. I go through the book with both who and what questions, labeling each pictures. I have my students repeat the names or point to the picture. The small choice pictures can be used to match with the larger pictures in the book. Sorting people vs Things After reviewing the vocabulary we sort the small choice pictures into people and things. I have them velcro the people on the who grid and the things on the what grid. Answering Questions I start my students using the what book that has no people in it. I read the question “What is next to the house?” The student finds the answer and places it on the sentence below the picture. I then read the answer. When my students are able to read the sentences and respond verbally they are encouraged to do this. As my student become proficient in answering what questions, I introduce the who book. We continue to sort people and things each session to help the students differentiate between who and what questions. As my students master this skill I introduce the book with both who and what questions. For students that struggle with the transition to this book I will limit their choices to only people when a who question is presented. Themes Each month I switch to a different set of who and what books, so my students do not memorize the books without truly learning the skills. This BUNDLE of adapted books includes the following: Adapted Family who and what questions Adaptive Fall who and what questions Adapted Halloween who and what questions Adapted Thanksgiving who and what questions Adapted Christmas who and what questions Adapted Snowman who and what questions Adapted Valentine’s Day who and what questions Adapted Leprechaun who and what questions Adapted Spring who and what questions Adapted Beach who and what questions Click HERE to check out the entire BUNDLE. I hope this helps you use these books to improve your students vocabulary skills and ability to answer who and what questions.

You might know I LOVE adapting books. And for good reason! Adding symbols and/or interactive pieces to books helps give students confidence and a purpose while reading. Recently, I adapted this book B is for Breathe using Widgit Online and it was so simple! I wanted to share the steps here with you, so you can adapt books of your own. And also, I'll share the symbols for this book as well. Using Widgit Online Software Widgit Online is very user friendly. It is similar to other word processing software, but when you type words, symbols appear with it! You can type in a regular word-type document, or you can choose a template to get started. For this book, I decided to use one of the templates. I picked the custom grid and simply added symbols to the grid! It is literally as easy as just typing in the boxes and the symbols appear! Here's a couple quick tips when using widgit online. How to change text on a symbol: See below. I wanted the symbol to say talk about feelings but wanted the feelings symbol. So I first typed "feelings", and then went up to the symbol with cat with the green box under it. When I click that symbol, it allows me to change the text that goes with that symbol. Super easy! How to change skin color for symbols: This button shows below allows you to change the skin color to any of the options below. And the button to the left of that one changes it from colors to black and white. Adapting the Book Often I add symbol sentences to books, but for this book I decided to add symbols to each page to focus on the calm down strategy offered on each page. First, I printed two copies of the symbols I created in Widgit Online. The first copy I cut apart (using a paper cutter, saves time and your fingers!) and then used packing tape* to attach each picture to the appropriate page. (*Note: For a sturdier copy of the book for heavy use or with rough students, take the book apart, glue symbols on and then laminate.) I put the pictures in a different spot on each page and this was for two reasons. The first, so that the book would still lay somewhat flat when all the velcro and extra pieces were added (as opposed to keeping them in the same spot). Also, this way I could make sure the symbols didn't cover up much of the artwork on each page. I added soft Velcro on top of each symbol after securing with the packing tape. And I actually cut the dots in half, because otherwise sometimes the pull can be so strong! Smaller dots would have also worked as well. The second copy I laminated. Then I added hard Velcro to the backs and then cut apart (with my paper cutter). That's all! Now the book is ready to use. Using the Adapted Book I usually just take off the symbols and place them next to the student or on a Velcro page or piece of carpet that Velcro sticks too for the students to take the pieces off while they read. Another option would be to print a third copy of the symbol page, laminate and attach the symbol pieces to that while reading or storing! As the student reads each page, they can match the calming strategy symbol to the each page. This is helpful because it gives the student something concrete to do on each page while reading the book, giving the book more of a purpose. Also, students can see how many pieces are left and know how much more of the book they have left! I also think it would be awesome to go through and practice these strategies with your class and discuss with students which strategies they think help them the most! You can even keeping one of the symbol pages in your class and when students need to calm down, they can look at those options for a coping strategy. Want to adapt your own copy of B is for Breathe? What is an adaptive or an interactive book? Some people use these two words interchangeably and some people see them as separate things. However you see it, they are both a type of book designed for special education, speech therapy, or young children. Here are my definitions: Adaptive Book: An adaptive book is a book that has been well.....adapted! This might mean that there are adaptive sentences with picture representation (picture symbols) underneath the words or that it simply a b
Using photos for therapy isn't exactly a new concept, I have tons of decks of skill cards that use photos! But, I needed something new that would meet a lot of different goals and came up with this binder.

I have been creating tons of adapted books this year! Some of them I have written myself, such as my environmental print Fast Food book or the Shark Hygiene book. Other books I have taken apart, added symbols from Writing with Symbols or Board Maker, laminated, and added adapted pieces. I love making book interactive as it checks for comprehension and gives the student a clearer purpose for each page.
