In 1939, when Royal H. Burpee was a Ph.D. candidate in applied physiology at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, he invented an as-yet-unnamed, four-count movement that would provide a quick and accurate way to evaluate fitness. Only later would it evolve into the six-count beast we know today. A 1RM FIT original. Design by Bien C. This racerback tank is soft, lightweight, and form-fitting with a flattering cut and raw edge seams for an edgy touch. • 50% polyester/25% combed ring-spun cotton/25% rayon • Fabric weight: 4.2 oz (142 g/m2) • Raw edge seams • Fabric is laundered to reduce shrinkage
William Daley was born in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, in 1925. His father William Sr. was a house painter with a love of literature. The younger William showed an early aptitude and interest in drawing. At the age of 18, he was serving in the US Army Air Corp during World War II when his plane was shot down over Germany, and he spent 10 months as a war prisoner. After the war he attended Massachusetts College of Art on the GI Bill, where initially he intended to major in painting. He switched to ceramics during his junior year, and he received his BS degree in 1950. Soon after, he completed his MA in art education at Columbia University Teachers College and landed his first teaching appointment at Iowa State Teachers College. Most of his nearly 40 years of teaching were spent at the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts). He considered himself a teacher first and foremost, and was known for his highly energetic engagement with his students. “I am a teacher who makes pots and things rather than a craftsman or artist who teaches,” he stated in a 1978 letter to the American Institute of Architects.

W październiku 2009 roku, Sekretarz Edukacji Stanów Zjednoczonych Arne Duncan oświadczyl w przemówieniu wygloszonym przed Columbia University's Teachers College, że wiele uniwersyteckich programów przygotowujących nauczycieli jest przestarzalych i musi zostac poddanych poważnym reformom w celu stworzenia wysokiej jakości nauczycieli potrzebnych do poprawy osiągnięc akademickich wszystkich uczniów (Departament Edukacji USA, 2009).

This lesson helps students explore the effect of culture on a person's food choices. After discussing the dietary guidelines of the USA (MyPlate), the students will look globally to explore food guides from countries around the world, and how they are reflective of that culture. Additionally, students will employ the Columbia University Teacher's College method of "boxes and bullets" to practice writing main ideas and providing supporting details for their writing and research aligned with the Common Core. This lesson was designed for the iPad as that's what my school uses, but could also be on individual chromebooks or other devices. The links that guide the research in this lesson are hosted on a public "Symbaloo" webmix, and the access QR code is on both the lesson plan (included) and project packet for students. Here is also a direct link to that Symbaloo: https://www.symbaloo.com/home/mix/13eP26Pc8a Steps: 1. Students view slideshow of global food guides and select one to research. Students explore the specifics of this guide. 2. Students explore more about the food, history, and culture of this country. 3. Using the photo website for the text HUNGRY PLANET: WHAT THE WORLD EATS by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio, students will compare what a "typical" family in this country eats to what they "should" eat according to their food guide. 4. Using the iPad app PicCollage (free), a similar collage creator on other devices, or even on paper, students will create a collage to report their findings. This Word Document Includes: -Student Project Packet with QR Codes, Lesson Plan, and Symbaloo Guide (everything you should need!) Help your students take a fascinating look at food and culture with this 21st Century Interdisciplinary Lesson!

Here are seven stories, so simply written that a child in the early primary grades can actually read them himself. The first, a rollicking, happy adventure tale, contains only 23 different words. Special 2018 Edition From the new Introduction by Janet L. Miller , Teachers College, Columbia University: \"Maxine Greene never claimed to be a visionary thinker. But forty years later, her trepidations detailed throughout 1978's Landscapes of Learning now appear unnervingly prescient. Witness and treasure Landscapes as evidence of her matchless abilities to inspire myriad educators and students worldwide.\" \"I would suggest that there must always be a place in teacher education for 'foundations' people, whose fundamental concern is with opening new perspectives on the many faces of the human world.\"--Maxine GreeneThe essays in this volume demonstrate clearly that Maxine Greene is herself an example of the kind of \"foundations\" specialist she hopes to see: someone who can stimulate, inform, and bring new insights to teachers, students, curriculum planners, administrators, policy-makers--indeed all those concerned with education in its broadest sense. These essays, a number of them based on lectures presented to various professional organizations, reveals her dedication to learning and teaching, as it reveals her belief in the potential of each individual person. A philosopher whose orientation is largely existential and phenomenological, she seeks to demystify aspects of today's technological society, to question taken-for-granted notions of social justice and equality, and to elucidate conflicts between youth and age, the poor and the middle class, people of color and Whites, male and female. As a humanist, she calls for self-reflectiveness, wide-awakeness, and personal transformation within the context of each person's own lived world--each one's particular landscape of work, experience, and aspiration.Recognizing the multiple realities that compose experience, the many landscapes against which sense-making proceeds, the essays are grouped in four sections: intellectual and moral components of emancipatory education; social issues and their implications for approaches to pedagogy; artistic-aesthetic considerations in the making of curriculum; and the cultural significance of women's predicaments today. All are richly illuminated by examples; all are written with grace and passion; all will help readers achieve greater self-understanding and critical consciousness.
Learn Science Through the Study of Food Systems Engage students in science learning through something they know and love – FOOD! Written by expert nutrition educators from the Teachers College Columbia University Extensively pilot tested and evaluated through a grant from the National Institutes of Health Growing Food provides experiences for students to learn science through the study of food systems. The module's driving question — How does nature provide us with food? — frames students' investigations as they learn about critical ideas in science: the cycling of matter and the flow of energy. Students engage in hands-on investigations of photosynthesis, explore food webs, discuss and debate managing agricultural systems, and more. They use scientific reasoning to explore and analyze their personal food choices and they apply what they have learned to personal decisions related to food systems, health, and the natural environment. “My students are thinking deeply about food system issues. They get excited every time we do the lessons. I use LiFE as a replacement unit in our adopted science curriculum.” – Stephen M., sixth-grade teacher.
