**NOW FILLABLE!!!** We are about to have a Professional Learning where the teachers will need to practice understanding how to "unpack" standards. I always feel this is easier to many if they have some type of graphic organizer to help them "see" how to do it. I made this one to help them practice. I hope it can help you or your co-workers with this concept. I have a much more in depth process/graphic organizer available as well. Please look at it as well to see how it can help you. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/5-Steps-to-Unpacking-a-Standard-Breaking-Down-a-Standard-4257368

It's makes them feel like they are putting their best work on display and I always feel they put a little more effort into making it look great! Check it out! I'm So Fancy Writing Paper (yes, if you have the song in your head in right now.. I'm Sorry!) You can grab the I'm So Fancy Writing Paper here and this FREEBIE PAGE too! Here's the preview of just some of the 200 pages that can be used throughout the year! If you are looking for themed writing paper, check out the following: Writing Paper Themed for the Whole Year. It also comes with Handwriting Without Tears Lines! These include 82 pages and 10 Journal Covers! (PLEASE NOTE - ALL OF THESE HAVE BEEN UPDATED TO INCLUDE A LOT MORE CHOICES! UPDATE: I've had several requests for creating paper for the older students, so I made I'm So Fancy for Older Students. Enjoy! Linking up with Kelsea from Teacher Gems to share tips and tricks! Stikki-Clips are amazing! I punch a small hole with a hole puncher in posters, projects, etc. and then keep the stikki-clip on the wall attached UPSIDE DOWN. Therefore, I can change out posters in a quick and easy way. They also keep the project hanging much longer and takes less clips to hold a project! I LABEL EVERYTHING! From guided reading books, book bins, and math manipulatives, to toys, games, and supplies. It helps the children (and me) remember where everything goes. For younger children, I color code everything or include a picture so they can easily find where to put the items back. It helps to keep everything organized. You can grab these math labels here. Update: I've included more labels for you! Here are just some of the labels I made this year from my EDITABLE label collection- Update: I've been adding to the ultimate collection and it has over 180 labels with 20 different styles! The MAGIC CIRCLE TRICK on the smartboard. Want to erase everything super fast on the smart board? Take your eraser on the smartboard and create a big circle around everything you want to erase (don't lift the eraser up while doing so). Most importantly, the ending point has to touch the beginning point. Then, tap the center (or anywhere in the circle with the eraser) and poof! everything inside the circle will erase. If it doesn't work, it means you didn't connect the starting and ending point of the circle. Find some other amazing fall math ideas from other great teachers below at Math Madness Wednesdays!
I created this PDF worksheet to help students to think creatively, elaborate, and tell a story. I've used this when I taught in elementary (as young as kindergarten) and used it also in high school. There is no right or wrong answer and it is fun to see all the creative solutions that students come up with. My high school students taking the animation pathway especially liked this worksheet. We always share the results in class to see all the different solutions. I've included a blank sheet that you can have students create their own sheet and then switch with a partner and create a drawing from it. This adds a sense of challenge and game element to it. My little ones and I have been having a blast together! We are loving and learning like crazy. I always start the first few weeks with a TON of bonding activities to help students get to know each other and form loving relationships. The classroom climate is THE most important thing to focus on (in my opinion) to have a successful year together! Teaching my kiddos to have empathy and treat one another with kindness and respect is first thing! When I saw this perfect idea on Cara's wonderful blog "The First Grade Parade", I knew I had to make it my own and do it with my tiny tots. We began by reading the story Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. I explained that we were going to read a story that shows how very important it is to treat one another with love and kindness. I held up a large heart cut-out and explained that each of us has a heart and our heart's hold all of the good feelings and love that we have. We were pretending that the heart was Chrysanthemum's heart. As we read the story, the kid's passed it around and every time someone said something hurtful to Chrysanthemum, we crumbled her heart a little more. This showed how our hearts are feeling when we get our feelings hurt. At the end of the story, the other characters say much nicer things to Chrysanthemum. The littles tried to smoother her heart back out now that she was getting some love back, but the damage was done and they quickly noticed that her heart did not look perfect. They realized that it is quite hard to fix a wrinkled heart, no matter how hard they tried! The moral of the activity was that the words they say to each other can leave hearts feeling sad long after we say them. We worked to heal her heart by bandaging it up! We glued the cute poem in the center as a reminder to choose our words carefully. I also made little bracelets for them to wear! I used strips of black construction paper as the bands :) We hung up the heart in our room as a reminder! You can download the heart poem and bracelets for FREE by clicking below! Hope you are having a relaxing weekend :) XO

Hey everyone!!! I hope everyone is having a great start to the NEW YEAR! It's always great to have a fresh start and a clean slate. (Although, is it just me or does your new year always begin in August?) : ) One of the things that I have been working on during my winter break is our lesson plans in science. By the way, we have a brand new standard this year in science!! (AND new standards are always exciting!) Drum roll...our new standard is... LIGHTS AND SHADOWS!! I know...so fun...kind of...except...I have never taught light and shadows, EVER!!! (Confession is good for the soul.) I mean, I have always taught first grade standards, AND light and shadows have never been one of our standards until now. So I definitely had to share what I learned with my first grade friends!! YOU! I have a lot of ideas, freebies, and links that you might be able to use, too. This blog post is part one of two...so hang tight...shadows will be coming next week!! We are going to launch our unit with Oscar and the Moth by Geoff Waring. He has a great collection of easy to understand books on science. This particular book is about light and shadows. Oscar the cat and his new friend the moth set out on a little journey to learn about shadows and light. Isn't Oscar a cutie? Light is energy and it makes objects visible and without it, we cannot see anything! So we are going to first discuss the kinds of light that we find in our world and list them by two categories: natural light and artificial light! We are going to use an anchor chart just like The Lesson Plan Diva's chart. Perfect! (You can check out her anchor chart by clicking on the photo above.) We are also going to be looking at all the different types of lights in real life. Would you include matches or a lighter? I am still debating. Since we don't have a real darkroom we are going to be using the restroom in our classroom. Hysterical! Just the thought of being in the restroom is going to crack my little firsties up! I am going to take them into the darkroom in groups cause my darkroom is tiny! My students who are not in the darkroom group will be working on the activity sheet below. You can find it free here! In the darkroom, I am hanging pictures of objects around the room. I want my students to see them when we shine the flashlight around the darkroom to make them visible because of light. We will discuss how light makes it possible for them to see the objects. And when I turn the flashlight off, the objects are no longer visible. (Yes...I totally expect some shrieks!! Eesh...but in the name of science, right?) In their science journals, they are going to record what they observed by drawing or writing what was visible in the darkroom. If you would like a copy of the pictures that I am going to use in my bathroom darkroom, you can find them here! We are also going to be looking at peep boxes. Have you ever used peep boxes? Kindergarten-Lessons.com is where I learned about peep boxes!! You should totally check out the website because they have some great suggestions and ideas for light and shadows! You can click here! They are not hard to make and you can easily make one for your students to see. Here is an example of one I made: Without light you can't see anything inside... But with light, you can see lots of things on the inside! I can't believe this box already had a peep hole!!!!! My students are going to record what they see inside the peep boxes in their science journals. You can find the scene that I used for my peep box here. It's so fun and exciting to look inside!!! I will be working on another one this week and I will let you know how it goes!! What kind of activities do you do for light and shadows? I am dying to know!! For the second part of our light and shadow unit, we will be talking about shadows and shadows will go along perfectly with Groundhog's Day. Yeah!! So come on back! I can't wait to show you what we are doing with shadows! Hoping you have a great week back!! An InLinkz Link-up

The fear of failure is one I write about often. You see, my classroom is a lab. A place to experiment. A place to make mistakes and learn from them. A risk-free, test-it-and-see-what-happens kind of place. We mess up all the time. And it is OKAY! WARNING: There is a good bit of hyperbole in

Learning about Art History the hands on way! Roll-A-Haring is a game I use year after year and am always surprised at the response it gets from my students. I use this activity to introduce my Elementary Art students to the fun and simple style of, American Artist, Keith Haring. Roll-A-Haring is wildly popular in my art room and I am confident your students will love it, too!
