This post was authored by Jennifer Johnson, my amazing 2018 blog intern. Check out the rest of her programming posts here. Happy spring! This month’s program is a perfect mesh of high-interest topics for kids from all walks of life. If your young patrons love tea parties, dinosaurs and/or free snacks, then this program is sure to be a hit! And what’s great is that I was fortunate enough to be able to take it on the road as an outreach program as well. Are you ready to dine with the dinosaurs? Here we go! Person wearing an inflatable T-rex costume waving at children sitting at a table This program idea came from reading Tea Rex by Molly Idle. I run a monthly program called Book Worms for kids five to eight years old where we read a picture book and then do a craft, game or activity. When I read Tea Rex, I thought, “H ow perfect! We can have a tea party with a T-Rex!” In addition to my public Book Worms program, I also take these monthly programs on the road to three different outreach groups. When there’s food involved, this can get pretty expensive if you’re not careful. By not getting too hung up on serving the prettiest tea party snacks, I was able to put on four separate tea parties for roughly one hundred kiddos for somewhere between $70-80, which is less than a dollar per child so I was pretty happy with that! Below is a list of the snacks and materials that I bought and portioned out in quarters among the groups. Snacks -3 packs of Kroger-brand fudge stripe cookies -1 pack of Kroger-brand lemon filled sandwich cookies -1 pack of Kroger-brand fig newtons -1 pack of Kroger-brand butter cookies -1 pack of Kroger-brand sugar wafers -4 bags of Kroger-brand pretzels -1 large carton of Goldfish snack crackers -2 large (50-pk) boxes of Kroger-brand fruit snacks -4 boxes of assorted flavors of Entemann’s Little Bites mini-muffins -1 gallon of Kroger-brand apple juice (for tea recipe) -16-pk Yogi Berry DeTox tea bags (caffeine free) -16-pk Yogi Lemon Ginger tea bags (caffeine free) A decorated table with a sign that says, "Welcome Friends" Other materials purchased -styrofoam cups -colorful tablecloths -fresh flowers -plastic table decorations and doilies from the Dollar Tree We already had a stockpile of plates and napkins, as well as a box of Airheads candy left over from another program that I portioned out with the other snacks. I didn’t do fancy table decorations for the outreach programs because the pretty dishes I brought from home were too difficult to transport, but we did put out flowers, decorations and table scatter for the public program. When taking the snacks on the road, I brought all the cake carriers I had at home and put the cookies and snacks in them ahead of time so that everything was already counted out. I also made sure to bring food service gloves with us so that the instructors at the sites could help us pass out food. reusable food containers next to a tote bag; Peaking out of the tote bag is a "Jurassic World"-branded snack bag. The tea recipe that I used can be found here. I did have to spend some time in our kitchen before each program to make sure the tea was freshly brewed. Luckily, the library had an insulated carafe that we were able to borrow that kept the tea at an agreeable temperature until we were ready to serve it. Our teen librarian owns an inflatable T-Rex costume and was kind enough to let me borrow it. Two of my co-workers took turns playing the role of the lovable but clumsy beast. We coordinated with each outreach group beforehand to make sure that each site had a room where the T-Rex wouldn’t be seen by the children before he was ready to make his entrance. We also made sure to have extra batteries on hand just in case the fan that inflates the suit started to die. After we’d read the story and get the kids situated with food, we’d have a quick discussion about tea party manners and how to treat our special guest before we brought the t-rex in. Inevitably, you still have the kids who will say, “There’s a person in there!” or try to pull on his tail, but you can address those individually. Overall, the kids absolutely LOVED getting to high-five, fist bump and hug a dinosaur! We even danced to “I’m a Little Teapot” with him at the public program! Children sitting at long cafeteria tables watching the door to a classroom. Jennifer is at the open door with the inflatable T-Rex behind her. If you’re interested in hearing about some of these other story/craft programs that I’ve taken on the road or if you have more questions about how this program worked, please feel free to contact me at Jennifer dot johnson at jcpl dot net.
Oedipus Silent Tea Party: Pre-reading and Textual Analysis Activity Are you getting ready to read Oedipus Rex with your class? Get your students up and moving with this Silent Tea Party. This is a rigorous activity designed for Honors students. This Silent Tea Party allows them to collaborate (silently!). They’ll walk around with a questionnaire to complete and a quotation from the Prologue. As they exchange quotations and record answers, they’ll eventually “solve” this “puzzle.” My students like that the answers are coded with NFL football teams. After your students complete this fun--but rigorous--activity, they’ll be well-prepared to read the Prologue to the play. I do this activity after introducing the Oedipus myth and before jumping into the play. My students read a modern translation of the play online, and the quotations all come from this version. The link to the modern translation is included in the Teacher Lesson Plan. This lesson plan is classroom-tested and includes the following: A teacher lesson plan with… • Common Core objectives • preparation steps • a classroom agenda • assessment strategies A class PowerPoint with… • student-friendly objectives • student directions • activity time limits

What's better than a tea party? Why a Tea-Rex party complete with royalty and dinosaurs. I talked to Youth Services librarian Tricia Wehrenberg, Youth Services Librarian at the Winona (MN) Public Library (once youth librarian at Amery Library in IFLS) about the fun and this is what they did. The seed for the program came from Tea REX, Molly Idle's 2013 book. Tricia and Marcia, her library associate, hatched the idea of doing a family evening program that would be attractive for girls and boys and many ages. I mean who doesn't like dinosaurs and royalty? Kids were invited to wear royal or dinosaur costumes. Fliers, Facebook, telling storytime caregivers and awesome patron word-of-mouth were all that was needed. Kids from tots to early elementary-aged came to enjoy the fun with their families. On the night of the program, Marcia was the princess host and Tricia was her silent t-Rex partner (the fan in in the costume to keep it inflated prevented talking). The princess began the soiree with a story, Crunch the Shy Dinosaur (Cirocco Dunlap, 2018). Next she knocked at a door and out came the T-Rex to "help," through mime, with the featured Tea Rex book., a hilarious take on tea party etiquette lessons for a dinosaur. The rollicking fun continued with dinosaur stretches, and songs (I'm a Little Tea Pot) that had the families laughing as the T-rex attempted the actions with those oh-so-tiny T-rex arms. As Tricia said, "I did alot of dancing and tail shaking for sure!" Activities included a paper hat-making station and dinosaur mask-making with accessories like mustaches and jewels for the royally-inclined. Lemonade was served in plastic cups (with handles to fancy them up) and mini-cupcakes completed the treats. For more pictures of the party, head to Winona's Facebook page. If you want more info on the party, contact Tricia. Thanks for sharing! Photos courtesy of Winona Public Library
I have two boys, 13 nephews, and only 4 nieces. Needless to say, we have a lot of bugs, dirt, soccer, boy scouts, bikes, skateboards, and frogs. I love every bit of my boys qualities and traits, but sometimes I long for something truly girly--hence my Girly Finding Dory
