Pascal Monteil’s rich, vibrant tapestries are rich with references to stories from all around the world, featuring mystical, fictional characters in colourful, intricately adorned clothes, or taking part in collective, dream-like scenarios. As much as they invite us in to contemplate their hidden symbols and stories, they are also exquisitely made, sometimes taking up to...
I had both of my Grandson's for the weekend. After they left today I went back to the studio to keep working on my pine needles. I fused the larger part of the each branch, quilt it, outline it and then stitch in the smaller branches in a variegated thread. When I have all the branches in I begin adding the needles with thread. It is a tedious process but the results are worth it. I keep my sketch of the short needle pine close by so I remember the layout of its branches. It is below zero today and colder weather is coming tomorrow. Good weather to stay put in the studio that is for sure!
Happy New Year! Despite the long pause in postings, I did actually complete a few more sewing projects in 2014. January 2014 - Drawstring book bags for Allie and Cate's birthdays February 2014 - Robert Hughes baby quilt (I really need to consider taking a "how to photograph your quilts" workshop:) quilted with stars and spirals May 2014 - Amy Becker's HS graduation lap quilt Amy picked out fabrics at Fabric Depot during her Portland visit, Christmas 2013. I supplemented with a few fabrics I found at The Stitching Post and at Kapaia Stitchery during a trip to Kauai (always looking for an excuse to fabric shop). The blue batik with butterflies was the first fabric Amy chose. Other colors were built around that. quilted with vining flowers and leaves Now Amy has this nice warm lap quilt - perfect for her college years at the University of Arizona in Tucson. She assures me that it does get cold there, especially when the air conditioner is running. November 2014 - New curtains and duvet set for the Sisters house After 20 years, Stefanie and I decided it was time for a change in the upstairs bedroom in our Sisters house. We found some curtain fabric at IKEA (seen below in the medium-sized pillows). After a futile search for a coordinating duvet cover I decided we just needed to make our own. Not as cheap, but so much more fun! On the bed in Anna's old room at our house (tempted to keep it here, but...) Had to add a border piece as it was just a bit too small. Found a fun coordinating fabric at The Stitching' Post. Shams and throw pillows. The quilting in the shams mimics the print in the curtain fabric. All set up in its new home. On to 2015... January 2015 - Jeanne's lap quilt This quilt was made for my good friend and fellow swimmer, Jeanne. She will be out of the water for a bit, recuperating from surgery, so of course this called for a quilt! My daughter, Anna, suggested the colors - perfect for a swimmer. Another swimmer friend, Jenn, joined me for a shopping trip to Fabric Depot and also helped with part of the sewing. Sandi and Jeanne The design incorporates over 60 small blocks with names of some of Jeanne's friends. Next Up???? cityscape art quilt based on a photo of Roussillon, France art quilt based on our Croatia travels last September flower/plant themed art quilt for the Hardy Plant Society Hortlandia Plant Sale in April hopefully taking Hilde Morin's Bowl Art class
Lesson idea from Art. Paper. Scissors. Glue! 3rd graders started a conversation about what textile arts are by reading the book "Tar Beach" by author and artist Faith Ringgold. We talked about how the book and its illustrations were actually inspired by a story quilt that Ringgold created (the original work is pictured in the back of the book I had). The story in the book brought up the themes of both inequality (which works well since February is Black History Month) and imagination. The book's main character 3rd grader Cassie Louise Lightfoot discovers she has the ability to fly and in doing so, finds a sense of power and ownership over whatever she flies. She flies over the George Washington Bridge (a structure her father helped to build), an ice cream factory, and the Union Building (a building which housed an organization her father was not allowed to join because of his skin color). After reading and discussing the themes in the book, I asked my 3rd graders "Where would you go if you could fly (real or imaginary) and why?" This question was the inspiration for our very own patches on our 3rd grade story quilt. Students created their own "story patches" by creating a border using squares of 1.5"x1.5" decorative paper along the edge of a 12" x 12" piece of white drawing paper. Students then attached a strip of grey paper to the bottom of their picture squares and wrote about where they would go and why. Then in the remaining space, they used colored pencils to illustrate their ideas. I got a huge range of responses from Candyland (naturally to eat a ton of candy), to Columbia (to visit friends and family), to the Twin Towers in New York City (which prompted an entirely difference conversation). Students really enjoyed working on this project (which took between 4-5 class periods -- including one day for sketching ideas). I really love the finished product - and even more so when they are all hung together to make a giant story quilt! :)
This post is the first in a series of three “Finish Line” posts featuring students who excel at fabric collage. The three I chose—Darlene Determan, Joanne Hannon Shaw, and Marilyn David…

Since I am accomplishing absolutely no stitching right now, I thought I would share with you a few favorite quilts from the International Quilt Invitational Exhibit. It was on display at a little museum over the mountains, and DH and I dropped in one day last month. There wasn't a single quilt in a style I would make (most of them were applique), but I loved seeing the variety of lovely, and clever quilts. Hope you see something you like. This is Leaf Hoppers, and from a distance it appears to be a unique take on a Baltimore Album quilt. Well, it is unique, all right. Look closer. Click on any of the photos to enlarge them. This was a fun quilt. Made me want to go home and watch an old movie. :) This quilt seemed to exude grace and fluidity. I felt like the fish would move any minute. Beautifully made! Had to include this fun explosion of color! Of course I would include a mini quilt! :) This quilt was stunning! I think I stared at this quilt the longest. Not only was the subject matter touching, but the techniques and execution had me captivated. On the home front, Maggie is keeping us smiling, and moving! Below, left, is DH with all of our grandchildren (so far). Maggie loves being with her cousins! And she keeps her great-grandmas entertained! I have tried to pop in and read a blog or two now and then. Sometimes I even have time to comment. But for two more weeks my presence in blogland will continue to be spotty, and for a very good reason! Until next time, Janet O.
Someone emailed me a few days ago asking about hanging methods for tapestries. Apparently sometime in the past I put some information about this online somewhere, but I can't remember this for the life of me... neither can I find it on the internet. To be honest, my memory is a bit like a colander.

Gunta Stölzl was a textile master at Germany's Bauhaus school and workshop in the early 20th century. Born in 1897, she translated modernism into weavings and vice-versa. She lived until 1983, working in Switzerland after the Nazi takeover of Germany. The website devoted to her work takes you through the various decades, showing how her ideas and colors changed. During the 1920s she summarized Bauhaus attitudes to design, paring down shape and color to the minimal: "The richness of colour and form became too licentious for us; it did not adapt itself, it did not subordinate itself to living. We tried to become more simple, to discipline our means...." Stripes and monochromes in a woven throw. But most of her life was about color Something she did remarkably well. All very licentious----especially for those who love a patchwork color scheme. She was very productive over a long life so you can find many of her weavings, sketches and paintings by doing websearches for images. You'll find at least one book about her. Do check out the website focused on her here: http://www.guntastolzl.org/ I've posted more about the Bauhaus and modernism here: http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.com/2010/09/modernism-and-ornament.html
I'm preparing for an exhibit soon and have lots of small tapestries that I'm getting ready to hang. I thought I'd share some of the process here. There's a good collection of articles about hanging methods for tapestry included at the American Tapestry Alliance website at this link. The method I was using a few years ago was the one I described at the ATA site and it's just a bit different than what I'm showing here. But... there you go... always looking for a different way... if not better! So here are my steps: For the mounting board I've used 1/2" foam core board. It works fine for small pieces; the largest one in this group is 41" long x 4" wide. I measured and cut the mounting board using a fresh blade in the utility knife. A cutting mat is quite helpful for this process as is a metal yard stick. Next, I stretched a layer of cotton flannel (prewashed/dried) over the board using 3/8" staples. I clipped the ends and trimmed excess cloth away. The mounting fabric in this instance is a natural color of cotton twill canvas. It was also washed, dried and this fabric was steam pressed (no need to press the flannel since it smooths out when stretching and stapling it.) Excess fabric was clipped out of the corners, then the edges folded over and stapled at the back. This step is a bit tricky--you want to pull the corners as tightly and smoothly as possible. Staple and then you're ready to stitch on the tapestry. The tapestry is laid onto the mounting board and pinned in place temporarily with t-pins. The mounting boards are about 1/4" to 1/2" larger than the tapestry so there's a small margin showing around the edges of the weavings. Before mounting, the ends of the warps are dealt with... for small pieces that aren't four-selvedge woven (which leaves no loose warps to deal with), I usually use a half-Damascus edge that Peter Collingwood describes in his book, The Techniques of Rug Weaving. It's shown on pages 484-486. The process is done with the face of the tapestry down and it makes the warp ends lay against the back/body of the tapestry. Then I whip-stitch the warp ends down, four to six grouped together. And wefts that are near the edges are also tucked to the back with a whip stitch. Using a curved needle, the tapestry is stitched to the mounting fabric, moving around the edges. A color of sewing thread that will blend with the edge colors as well as possible is what was used, although I changed color of stitching thread if the value contrast of the weft at the edges was great. On the pieces with the warp showing at the edge, the stitching color was changed to the warp color (usually natural color). The curved needle will slip into the mounting fabric, travel up about 1/4" and then come out between the first and second warp. Pull the needle out, bury the sewing thread between wefts, then put the needle across to the mounting fabric again where you'll take another stitch under the fabric to the next point of attachment to the tapestry. This is a curved needle... although looks straight here. The back of the mounting board was covered with a piece of illustration board (mat board will work also) that was glued down. To glue it in place, the illustration board was quickly painted with slightly diluted craft glue, brushing it over the entire board and immediately laying the board on the back of the mounting board/tapestry. You need to be prepared to weight the whole thing down immediately--have wax paper torn to sightly larger size than the board (this is a barrier to keep any bits of glue from your weight) and put the wax paper on top of the whole thing. Weigh it down with something heavy (I use books). Leave it all alone overnight and when you uncover it the next day, all should be fine. For hanging, there are several solutions... you can use an adhesive hanging system, sawtooth hangers, or velcro. I was able to locate enough push pin sawtooth hangers to use for the tapestry diary pieces at the local hardware. This is an easy method to use and should stay in place just fine. The mounting board may also be put into a shadowbox-like frame. That's what I'm going to do with several of the smallest tapestries--frames will have to be built to size by a local craftsman in this case since I haven't been able to find shadowbox frames as small as I need. And... here are the framed pieces... Jeff just delivered the frames a short while ago. They're exactly what I wanted for these pieces.
