This week I have continued to help out one of my local quilt shops with making samples. I made this Touchdown top in Bronco colors and kid sized. This is a great pattern designed by Cluck Cluck Sew and I am looking forward to making a bigger one for my hubby. This one is my own design and I need help coming up with a name for the pattern. Any ideas? This is also my design--meet Quilt Berries. The disappearing ink I used for the quilting has not all disappeared, but will in a couple of more days. I finished binding it this morning for Slow Sunday Stitching: https://kathysquilts.blogspot.com/2017/06/slow-sunday-stitching_25.html I tried something new--bunting! I made two of these that say "Row By Row." The one pictured is the smaller one. They were quite easy and fun. I am thinking of making some buntings for myself now... For those of you like me who have a tight budget for quilting, I recommend helping out your local quilt shop with sample sewing. They often need help with making samples and it lets me play with fabrics. They give me a discount for helping out and I get the samples when they are done with them. It is a win win for both parties. I helped my dad out and put together a kit for my mom to make a Lori Holt Milk Cow Quilt. This was his anniversary present to her. I can't wait to see how it comes out with her brown and white cows. A few weeks ago, I went fabric shopping at a town a half hour north of us. There is a charity shop near the fabric store that benefits hospice. I always pop in there looking for treasures...They had a Singer treadle machine that was in pretty bad shape. It was priced $49--I did not buy it initially. I thought about it and decided to call and see if it was still available and amazingly it was. I was planning on buying it just for the base. My hubby went with me to pick it up and agreed it was a good deal and would be fun to repurpose it. It was manufactured in November 1910. Here is the machine itself--someone sewed a lot on it! We will probably sell the machine on eBay and maybe some of the drawers--there were 6. I want to keep them, but either way the project will pretty much be free. My hubby painted the base as we decided to use it as a table on our front porch. The top is an old cabinet door left over from my ironing station repurposing project. Doesn't it look great? Yesterday, I went over to my mom's and used her long arm to quilt my Pineapple Picnic Quilt. I will be binding that today and working on a squirrel project I started on Friday night! Stay tuned...
A few more shots of things I liked: I love the name of this quilt: What's for Breakfast by Karen Anderson-Abraham. Karen is influenced by modernist painters of the 20th century, most specifically the Bauhaus movement. This one has a wonderful name too: The 48 Pound Quilt by Tanya Finken. There are 42 pound symbols on the front, six more hiding on the back! Pojagi-influenced Hearths Aglow by Katrina Walker is absolutely beautiful. Amy's Barickman's outfit - love the fabric. Victoria's Quilt with Friends: Exquisite Journey. Six friends made panels that link with a road, foreground and sky elements...the artists are Leslie Rucker Jenison, Frances Holliday Alford, Kathy York, Victoria Findlay Wolfe, Michele Muska and Hoodie Crescent.
Hi! I mentioned in an earlier post that I have been helping out one of my local quilt shops with making samples for the shop and our town's upcoming quilt show. She had several of Elizabeth Hartman patterns in, but no samples. I offered to whip some up. This is the Florence Flamingo small quilt with smaller borders and made from some pink Bali batik strips. I just got back from picking up a backing, so I can quilt it up this evening. I am going to quilt it horizontally about every half inch. I think it will be fun and modern. The shop owner was thrilled with how the sample looked and immediately ordered some more patterns in. This is Dwight the Deer with glasses. It is a 24 inch square pillow cover. Since we live in deer country this is sure to be a hit. And last but certainly not least, Bjorn the Bear also with glasses and is a 20 inch square pillow cover. Wouldn't this be cute with a bunch of them for a baby quilt? There were several sizes included with the pattern. I had never used an Elizabeth Hartman pattern before, but I am now a huge fan. Her directions were thorough, all in color, and very detailed. You can find her patterns here: http://www.ohfransson.com
I have a gift for you all! With every collection I love to gift a free quilt pattern. :) Today I’m excited to finally share my Woodland Rose quilt, and you can download the pattern for free! …

Welcome! It is the big reveal--my first project I made for the Fat Quarter Shop--the Mini Charm Chocolates Quilt! This is a free pattern offered in three quilt sizes and a table runner. You can find the pattern here: https://static.fatquartershop.com/media/wysiwyg/pdf/MCchocolates-CompletePattern.pdf I made the 30 1/2" x 38 1/2", but then I added an extra border to make it a bigger baby quilt. I cut my floral borders 6 1/2", so my finished size is 42 1/2" x 50 1/2". I quilted it every 2 inches both vertically and horizontally with the built in wavy stitch on my Pfaff. This is the perfect quick baby quilt with the help of the three mini charm packs and wide borders, there is very minimal cutting and it sews together quickly! Since I used the floral fabric as an extra border instead of my backing, I opted for a bright red minky for the backing. I used minky for the first time about a year ago--it is challenging because of the stretching, but it is so soft it is worth it. The key is pinning every 1 to 2 inches, quilting gloves, and a walking foot. Thank you Fat Quarter Shop for allowing me to play with these beautiful fabrics and fun pattern!

I am so excited to finally be able to reveal this beautiful quilt designed by Fat Quarter Shop as a Shortcut Quilt. You can find the pattern on their blog here: https://blog.fatquartershop.com/shortcut-quilt-fat-eighth-fruitcake/ I used mostly Bonnie and Camille Smitten fabrics. It measures 64x75 and is a very quick pattern. You could easily make 12 blocks and have a great size baby quilt. My friend Glenn quilted it with an all over floral design called magnolia. I chose this red and white gingham backing because I love gingham and it looks so vintage with the Bonnie and Camille fabrics!
In winter, after rains, new flowers become abundant. These become very decorative with bright yellow, pink and lavender colours. Cotton Duck Fabric Manufacturer Melbourne.
I started this on Tuesday and finished it this morning! I have always wanted to make a sail boat quilt and Messy Jesse has been working on one http://messyjessecrafts.blogspot.com/ and the pattern is free http://www.quiltmag.com/quilt-patterns/quilt-junejuly-2013-%E2%80%93-naturally-nautical-blue-and-white-remake/ so I started digging in my blue scraps and just used some random pieces of muslin for the background. Every boat is a different blue fabric. I made mine smaller than the original pattern with 18 boats. I quilted it with the large wavy quilt stitch on my Pfaff horizontally, so it looks like the ocean. I spaced them every inch. It scrunched up nicely in the wash and its finished measurements are 35 x 50 inches. I used the Pellon cotton batting and the backing/binding is something I had in my stash from Jo Morton and I know I bought it ages ago for $3 a yard. Thanks to Kelly over at http://myquiltinfatuation.blogspot.com/ I am trying to label my quilts. I named this one "Sail Away." I really love how this came out because I like how it looks like an antique quilt and it reminds me of all the sailing I did when I was a teenager. Now, I can start something else. I need to make a needle book for a swap, so I am off to the quilt shop for some special fabric.

Some of you who have followed my blog for a long time probably remember that I unexpectedly had to buy a new sewing machine last April--I had worn out my Pfaff Ambition 1.5 in less than seven years. I kind of scrambled and ended up buying another Pfaff, but a Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.2. It has a lot more features like a thread cutter and the needle down feature--I needed a machine with a buttonhole stitch for appliqué and the wavy quilting stitch I rely on, so I did not consider a Juki last April because it is a straight stitch only. The insides of my new Pfaff are all plastic and I will likely wear it out rather quickly like the last one, so I was thinking another work horse machine may be the solution for me. I had been doing some research and decided I would get a Juki TL2010Q this spring. I told my hubby about my plan and he told me not to wait and just order one in. He is totally off the hook for Valentine's Day and my next birthday now! There are not any local Juki dealers near me and even the ones in Denver do not stock this machine, so I bought it sight unseen. It arrived on Thursday and I am so impressed! It is very basic as far as threading it, but it flies through fabric with 1500 stitched per minute. You can push a button on the machine to cut the thread or rock back on the foot pedal. It also has a needle down feature. The only criticism I have so far is the lighting on it is lacking, so I will figure out had to add some more light... Rachel, my friend who got her longarm in August, quilted my Scrap Dance Two Step Mystery Quilt for me. I picked it up from her on Tuesday afternoon and put the binding on it and then spent every evening stitching it down. I finished it last night and washed it this morning. It shrunk to 68 inches square. Rachel did a beautiful job with the quilting--I love the pattern she selected and the light green thread. This is a wedding gift for two teachers who got married in August and I can't wait to give it to them this week! I added the final borders to my Spools 2 Quilt on my new Juki. I need to finish its label and get my backing together. Since I wanted to play on my Juki, I made a yellow curved log cabin block last night for the RSC19. I also whipped up the first blocks for the Threadology Quilt Along with the Fat Quarter Shop this morning. Here is the link for information: https://blog.fatquartershop.com/2019-charity-quilt-along-block-1/ Next up were the Harry Potter Quilt Along blocks. Above is Hedwig and below is the Ron Selfie block. You can find links on my right hand sidebar. I am working on my Farm Sweet Farm blocks for that quilt along, but they are not done yet as they involve appliqué. That is going to be an amazing quilt! I have a queen sized quilt all ready to bind during the Super Bowl for Slow Sunday Stitching https://kathysquilts.blogspot.com Have a great week!

I usually know when teachers are expecting at one of my schools, but I was surprised the week before Winter Break to find out that one of our male teachers was due to have a baby within a week. Austin was delivered on Saturday 12/21, so I started digging in my stash immediately. My spies informed me that navy and grays were the nursery color. I decided to make the Name Quilt from Spelling Bee by Lori Holt. I made a six inch block of Grandpa's Truck from her Farm Girl Vintage 2. I made mine slightly larger than the pattern. This project is definitely my Drop Everything and Make It for December---here is the link for other DrEAMi! projects: https://www.mmmquilts.com/2019/12/dreami-35.html I bought some gray minky to use for the backing and I will get it quilted up this week. Stay tuned for my first finish of 2020! Rachel longarmed this old Sister's Choice UFO for me. She did an all over leaf pattern. It is rustic and lovely--perfect for a lodge-style home in Breckenridge. I finished binding it before Christmas and it will be sent to my daughter's friend as a thank you gift ASAP. The leaf quilting is very detailed and she used a rust colored thread which is perfect. Here is the backing after washing it is 64 x 74 inches, so a good size for a lap quilt. Bonnie Hunter released her Frolic Mystery Quilt Clue 5 yesterday. I wasn't finished with Clue 4 quite yet, but between binge watching the second season of You on Netflix with my daughter in my sewing room--I got Clue 5 completed as well as Clue 4. We still haven't touched our greens, but I have been keeping up! https://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/frolic-mystery.html Before Thanksgiving, I stopped by my favorite antique store and scored five milk glass lace edge candy dishes. Three are small and two are larger. I already have a larger one that I use to hold my binding clips and thread. I paid $15 for all of them which is a great buy! I gifted a large one to my mom for Christmas with scissors and Wonder Clips. I turned this small one into a pin cushion for my longarm friend, Rachel. I also completed my One Monthly Goal for December--to get my Ombre Gems top completed and I also ordered a backing for it. It will go into the to be quilted queue very soon. https://www.elmstreetquilts.com/2019/12/one-monthly-goal-december-finish-link-up.html I have four more baby quilts to make for spring arrivals. One of my coworkers is expecting identical twin boys in March. I hit a great sale at Connecting Threads and ordered the pattern and fabrics to make two Bjorn Bear Baby Quilts. One will have a mint green background and the other will have a light blue background. I am planning on making the bears from the same fabrics for each quilt. I made a Bjorn Pillow as a sample for my local quilt shop a few summers ago and I am looking forward to crafting some more cute bears. I have also been working on my Sunday Best Sampler Quilt--I have all the blocks done and now I am getting them ready to sew together. My blocks were made from my Bonnie and Camille scraps, so they are stunning and deserve their own post. Happy New Year!
