Lycium pallidum is a perennial shrub in the Solanaceae family. A native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. Some common names are Pale Wolfberry or pale desert-thorn. It can grow to 10 feet tall but is usually around 3-4 feet tall and wide. The branches have spines on the tangly branches with blue-green leaves that form into round thickets. The solitary tube-shaped flowers hang down from the branches. The fragrant flowers are a greenish-yellow with white flared tips and bright yellow filaments. A drought-tolerant shrub that will prefer full sun to part shade. Excellent for xeriscaping. Zones 8-11 Germination Mix seeds and soil and moisten the mix slightly in a ziplock bag. Write the name of the seed on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 60 days. Seed should be sown into well-drained, sandy compost and covered to their own depth with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in a filtered light spot and kept moist. Seeds germinate very slowly regardless of when they are sown. Some seeds may take more than a year to germinate.

This is inspired by some beautiful oak woodland we came across on a holiday to the Brecon Beacons one summer. The twisty tangly nature of oaks, alive with birdlife made it feel a very magical place to be. Jane created a pattern based on this landscape, it's what she loved to do. It is printed in three layers, the base layer being a monoprint using bubblewrap which gives an even pattern in which I can vary colour. It adds the summer sunlight. The second layer is a linocut with a background designed to add a sense of depth, and the final layer of linocut gives the foreground silhouetted as the sun shines through. Jane loved to play with this idea and create different patterns in the background and different seasons and moods by varying the colours. It is printed on lokta and the image measures 28cm x 18cm, the paper measures approx 25cm x 34cm. Each print will look slightly different.

I found this lesson over at Stuck In The Mud Pottery and fell in LOVE with it. First of all, it's a H.S. lesson. Second of all, I knew my 6th graders would be up for the challenge. Third of all....our designs turned out FANTASTIC! Janelle's instructions were top-notch. The only thing I changed was adding oil pastels over our cross-hatching shadows. My students love to use oil pastels, and quite frankly, I have a hard time leaving artwork b&w. I need color in my life, what can I say? My students worked on 16x20" paper, started with a pencil, then traced over their lines with a black marker. I showed them how to make the "ribbons" look like they are going under other ribbons, how to make the loop, and how to add shadow where another "ribbon" overlaps it.
