The Modern Table Runner All of a sudden, I need to make a lot of versions of this table runner. Version 1, already in progress: This is a custom order from an Etsy customer who requested an off-white background and a narrower width (13", while the one pictured above is 17") I felt that since it's quite a bit narrower than the ones I've been making a 3 block design would work better-- I think that was the right call for this one. So this one has 3 squares across in each row, instead of the 4 squares in the original. Next will be a copy of the runner pictured at the top of the page. This occurred in unusual circumstances: The runner pictured at the top of the page sold in my Etsy store on Friday. About 30 seconds after it sold, ANOTHER customer emailed me to say that very same runner had been IN HER CART and someone beat her to it and paid for it before she could check out! I was astonished by this, since at any given moment there are well over 5000 table runners for sale on Etsy-- what are the odds that 2 people would try to buy the same item at the same moment? Truly mind-boggling. Anyway, I set up a custom order for the second customer for her table runner so no one else can buy it! So I will be making that one next, and then I'll probably make a third to have in my store! Also under construction today, a custom placemat set for a co-worker of my husbands. She has an Office Lunch Set of mine and wanted to order these as a gift for friends. It's 2 placemats plus 2 coasters. The fabric is "Down on the Farm" from Kaufman, available at Fabric.com.

Believe it our not this is a super easy table topper that makes a big impact. It's just strips cut at an angle to make that spider web look! I made 2 sizes, one fits nicely on my table as a table topper and the other would make a prefect candle mat. It's easy to adjust the size of the spider web by adding more or less strips. I think my little googly eyed spiders are happy to have such a cool web to hang at :) To start you'll need six 2 1/2 inch X width of fabric (about 44in) strips. Sew your strips of fabric together like you see I've done below. Press all your seems to one side. Most quilting rulers have a 60 degree angle line on the ruler. Your going to use this line to cut out 6 triangles. Like you see I've done below, lay your long strips of fabric out on a cutting mat and line the top edge with the 60 degree mark on your ruler. A little clearer picture of that 60 degree angle... Now using you rotary cutter, cut one side of your triangle at a 60 degree angle. Now turn your ruler and line up the 60 degree line with the side you just cut. (see picture below) As you cut your second triangle you'll notice now that the triangle is flipped so that the longer bottom of the triangle (black with bats in my case) is now the point and the green circles will be the longer bottom on the triangle. See the next picture after this one if that seems confusing... Cut out 6 of these triangles. If you are using 2 inch X WOF strips then you should be able to easily get 6 triangles. If you increase the size of each strip you'll need to increase the length of each strip. For instance, I wanted a larger table topper for my dining room table so I increase each of my 6 strips from 2 inches to 4 inches, but then I needed twice as much length so I ended up sewing two strips of fabric together end to end to make them long enough to get 6 triangles. Lay your triangles out like you see I've done in these pictures. Start by sewing together the 3 top and then the 3 bottom. Now sew the top 3 and the bottom 3 together in the middle. Open it up and press and you'll have something that looks like this... You can now quilt and bind your table topper using your favorite method. This is a perfect project to practice quilting yourself on your own machine. See THIS POST for tips on how to do that. As you can see I made 2 different sizes. For the smaller size I only used 4 strips instead of 6. Make sure that you use an even amount of strips (4,6,8...). If you use an odd number you will end up with a middle strip that doesn't alternate when you rotate each triangle.

This is a tutorial for making the Candy Corn Table Topper. If you want a fast and easy project, this is a good one. It took me about an hour, start to finish, with taking photos along the way. Mind you, this has not been quilted yet, but I think probably another hour of time and I could have it quilted and the binding on. Okay, here we go, start with 5 strips cut 2.5" x WOF (Width of Fabric 40-44") mix up lights, darks and mediums for visual interest. Stitch your strips together in a strip set and press all the seams in one direction. Doesn't matter which way, they just all need to go in the same direction. TIP: make sure your seams are all the way open. Now take a look at your quilt ruler, look for the 60 degree marks. Don't get them mixed up with the 45 degree marks or you'll have a mess. You might want to put a colorful sticker at one end to remind you. Lay your ruler on your fabric and line up the 60 degree line with the first seam on your set. Make sure the bottom of the ruler is on the fabric before you make a cut. Trim away the fabric to the left of the ruler as shown below. Make sure your ruler doesn't move when you are cutting. The first cut is very important. Okay, now move your ruler and line up that 60 degree line with the cut side of your fabric as shown below. See how we are creating that 60 degree triangle? Okay, now cut your fabric along the right side of the ruler, as shown below. Now, without turning your fabric, turn your ruler and line up that 60 degree mark along the cut edge of your fabric as shown below. Again, you will make your cut on the right side of the ruler as shown below. You will continue to do this, alternating your ruler back and forth until you reach the end of the strip set. You should have 6 triangular pieces. If you have done as instructed, you should have 6 triangles. You will notice by cutting 3 right side up and 3 upside down that we have two different looking sets of triangles. Alternate these for your layout as shown below. We will sew this together in two sets as shown below. All seams will be pressed OPEN. Take one triangle and place it right sides together on the other. Now this is the cool part. Since we ironed all the fabric seams in one direction to start, they will nestle together. Nest your seams and place a pin next to the seam to keep things lining up properly. This seam is on the diagonal so be careful when you are stitching and don't over stretch the seam, you can give a little tug to get things lined up if necessary. Nest your seams as shown below, you will feel them nest together, then tuck a pin next to the seam. When you have stitched your seam, press it open as shown below. You are now ready to attach the third triangle. Make sure you alternate colorways. Note the tip or rabbit ear that is sticking out. Don't cut it off. Leave it, we will use it to match up the tip of our next triangle as shown below. Now stitch 1/4 inch starting at the intersection of that tip and the other side as shown below. Press your seam open. and it should look like the one below. Leave that little tip, it will help us line things up, you can trim it after. Do the same for the other 3 triangles. You should have two halves sewn together now. Take a pin and put it through the intersection of the point on one half and through the same point on the other to line them up right sides together. Keep this pin perpendicular to your fabric and place a couple pins on either side before you remove it as shown below. As before, nest all of your seams, placing a pin next to each one to keep your fabric from moving and stitch your final seam. Trim off any remaining bunny ears and press your seam OPEN. You are ready to quilt and bind your Candy Corn Table Topper! It will take two strips of fabric 2.5" x WOF (width of fabric 40-44") stitched together to bind your little table topper. Finished size is about 23 inches in diameter. You can increase or decrease the size of your table topper simply by using wider or narrower strips in your strip set. The table topper will finish at about twice the width of your strip set.

I mentioned the Bucket List Club for a reason. Yep, February is for the Delectable Mountains block. This block is lots of fun to sew and design with. There are several different construction methods for this block and different sizes. It also shows lots of design possibilities. I love the scrappy one! The block begins with easy 8-1/2" squares. I used this construction and dimensions for my delectable mountains collection which I'm sharing here. http://quiltville.com/delmtspf.html Here is my delectable mountains table runner. It measures 12" by 45". You will notice that I trimmed off the square corners. This created a bit of a challenge with the binding. I think I created 60 degree corners. One corner didn't make for a smooth mitre. I should have rounded them off. Naturally, I played around with this block design in EQ. Here are a few layouts for table runners. They are all designed with the block dimensions from quiltville.com. The differences are achieved by how you rotate the blocks. Examples 1 and 2 use 12 blocks each and examples 3 and 4 use 16 blocks each. Each 8-1/2" square makes 2 blocks, one and another one reversed. For example, if you wanted to make runner #4, you only need to start with 8 light color blocks and 8 dark color blocks. Stay tuned for the table topper. It's nearly ready!
