Grammar Surgery Day was an unforgettable day in our classroom! This worked as a comprehensive review of many different standards we learned in grammar this year. It was relatively low cost and we had donations that helped as well. I'll try and walk you through the steps of what we did. Checklist available at end of post! Diplomas printed just from a Google search. Masks were donated. The small glue sticks were from Dollar Tree. Gloves, gowns, and masks were donated by our local clinic! We kept them in relatively good shape so we can use next year. The hand sanitizer and bandaids were just from our first aid kit --- all placed on cookie sheets from my house. Here's another look at some of our supplies. Students came in and received a gown and doctor badge. You can download my doctor badges here - I created unique titles for all my students based on their interest and just used pictures we had from earlier in the year. I had all the surgeries laid out on the back table with the supplies needed for each. We had 3 "operating rooms" with the students working in groups. These were just Dollar Tree table cloths!! Really cheap. I had the students divided into groups on the board and we took our "hippocratic" oath and got our pre-op instructions before we got started . They set off to work and I monitored the rotations to make sure the groups all weren't doing the same one. I bounced between surgeries and they had to get their score/check off before moving on to the next one. I had answer keys ready and if they made more than 5 errors they had to stop look it over and fix it. I also had to make sure that each team member was working - which was tough for a couple of my kids. It might not look like much but those 9 surgeries involved: 1. suturing vocab words to defintions 2. stapling figurative language words, definitions, and examples 3. using noodles to punctuate dialogue 4. color coding parts of speech 5. blood typing ordering adjectives and more !! Check out these 2 documents for planning! Here are the activities we did. and some signs for the surgeries. I kept all the envelopes for next year and copies to make sure we can do it again. I had such a great day and the kids had a blast. It took us about 3 hours to complete all the surgeries.

I can't even begin to tell you how much fun Operation Day was in our classroom. I saw this blog post by Kickin' It In Kindergarten and immediately bought her Vowel Surgery pack. I started thinking of how I wanted to implement it in my classroom and decided we were going to do it on our "O Day" for our A-Z Countdown to Summer. I created a bunch more centers to go along with her unit because I wanted to have some more options of things to do. My kids had soooo much fun and several asked, "Can we do this again tomorrow?" I was exhausted. I was so worth all the work for this day. To start off, all my kids came in and they got scrubbed in and dressed for surgery. We watched a short video about what doctors do during surgeries. We had our headlamps on too. We wanted to be able to see what we were doing. We started off by using Seesaw and we recorded what the job of a surgeon is. We had to state 3 things that surgeons do. We had several centers that we had to rotate to. At this center, we played Operation. Each station had blood bags at them. These were filled with red food coloring and water. I did run out of food coloring so we had to use red Kool-Aid. I had Bio-Hazard boxes at some of the stations. This was the Vowel Surgery Station that I got from Kickin' It In Kindergarten. I had cookie trays at the table with tweezers. Kids had to put the missing vowels in the word cards. I had a waiting room set up. In the waiting room kids had to read the eye charts. The eye chart had sight words in it. In the waiting room, there were baby dolls aka: The Patients. Each patient had a chart with them that listed all their ailments on it. The doctors had to read their patients charts and give them a diagnosis. They had to take a picture of the chart with the Seesaw app and then touch the record button and read it and say their diagnosis. There was also a book area to read books while waiting for the doctors to get done. I had a bunch of supplies out for them to use on their patients. Click here to hear a doctor giving a diagnosis after reviewing their patients chart. At the station below, kids used the our light table to view some x-rays. They had to put the bones together to form a skeleton. In this station, the doctors used microscopes to view different viruses. Here the doctors were making books in Book Creator. They found band-aids around the classroom that had sight words on them. They had to take a picture of the band-aids and then make a book out of the words. They recorded themselves reading the words. I had a parent donate some pill bottles to our class. When of our end of the year assessments was sorting. I put a bunch of different shaped on pills and had the kids sort the pills with similar shapes into pill bottles. I loved this center. The doctors were working on their fine motor skills when they were fixing the babies. I got a bunch of babies from The Dollar Tree and cut them. Some had cuts on their arms, legs, foreheads, sides, etc. The doctors had to use a needle and string and had to stitch them up. I had gauze and band-aides here too, At this center doctors were counting out viruses to put in the vials. The vials had a number on them. The doctors had to use a tweezers and put the matching amount of pills in the vials. ' Finally to end our day, we made treats with syringes that had frosting in them. We used Twizzlers and made them look like a Red Cross sign. This was an amazing day. I was able to step back and watch my kids have so much fun while using skills that we learned throughout the year. They were socializing with one another, using problem solving skills, using technology, reading, counting, sorting all while having fun! There are so many fun text feature surgeries out there, but I needed something appropriate for the second grade standard. I created this last year for my students to work on knowing and using various text features to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently. I wanted them to be able to explain how each text feature provided them with the information to better understand the text. Weathering and erosion fell during this time on our pacing guide, so I incorporated those social studies standards into the unit. (I will work on a separate resource that can be used with any text.) Weathering and Erosion Interactive Read Aloud Here is a peek at the focus board. I kept our text features posters up and added this new text features anchor chart that we can use throughout the week. As always, my lesson plans include a mini lesson, text dependent questions, daily task, partner talk, and an exit ticket. Our anchor text for the week was Weathering and Erosion. I began the week by telling students that they were now surgical residents at Text Feature Medical School. They would be working throughout the week to become surgeons on Friday. Below is the poster I displayed in our PowerPoint and in the room. They were beyond excited! I have changed up the way I did the activities from last year. I learned that my students needed more time with text features before getting to the surgery. I made another unit that should be completed the week prior, which you can find HERE. The first day's daily task is a text feature BINGO. This is a great review of the text features! After you read the text, you will go back through the text with students playing BINGO as you display the pages for them to see. I made three different game boards. These would be great to laminate and put in a center the following week for continued practice with any text. I also learned last year that students need lots of practice finding, identifying, and explaining the information provided by the text feature. That's what they will do for three days with different parts of the text through these scavenger hunts. This book is great for providing lots of exposure to different text features. By Friday, your students should now be ready for the big day! I included these hospital posters that you can hang around your room for a room transformation. I put blue bulletin board paper on the tables, along with surgical masks and gloves. It was the easiest room transformation and free! The masks and gloves were donated. Students will be given a passage. Their goal is to help their patient who is in need of text feature transplants. They will find a text feature, remove it from the passage, and transplant it onto their patient to help them become a better reader. After the surgery, they will complete post op reports in which they have to name the text feature and the information provided by the text feature. Our social studies adoption was the Social Studies Weekly passages. We used those for the surgery, but I know that not everyone has access to those. I included a passage with text features in the resource for your students that you can print. The patient is printed on two sheets of paper so that it's really large. I used the 12x18 construction paper to attach them to. Each student was given four post op reports to complete. I went ahead and put all of this together beforehand. The surgery takes a while, and I didn't want to waste time having them glue everything together. Everything was ready to go when they came in that morning. I just had them read to self when they first walked in before I started my lesson. Once the surgery started, I played a YouTube video that sounded like a heart monitor for added sound effects. I also include a mentor sentence to incorporate your language for the week. As always, there is a digital version of this resource that is great for your distance learners or just to use in your classroom as your lesson guide. These Google Slides TM are a great way to increase engagement with remote learners with virtual text feature surgery! There are five days of lessons. Each day has an agenda, video, learning goal, success criteria, vocabulary, read aloud, independent task, exit ticket, wrap up, and self-assessment. Hi friends! Just popping in to share a few activities we are worked on this past week. Contraction surgery is a themed day to support our previous learning of contractions. My kids have enjoyed this idea for years, so I'm excited to finally have a product that meets the needs of how I teach the skill. Here's a little background on building my theme. I purchased the lab coats several years ago on Amazon. The store is called Makerspace Lab. The coats came in a pack of 10 for $19.99. I've used the same coats for years even though they're disposable. As you can see, they've held up nicely. With that being said, they're disposable. I've lost a few snaps over the years. The goggles were purchased with my lead money several years ago. They're made by Learning Resources but I purchased mine from EAI Education. They were cheaper, costing under $3 each. There are several reasons I prefer to use the goggles over mask. The goggle are easier for primary students to adjust since they're worn like glasses. The adjustment extends at the ear. Also, I can place them in my dishwasher to clean them after they're used. The lab coats and goggles are over-the-top and not at all necessary. I can tell you from my personal experience, my students are much more excited when they hear we will be dressing as scientist today. They're aware this means an investigation. If you're looking to complete the activity on a budget, ask your school nurse for a donation. We had masks and gloves on hand at school. The materials were donated to my students to use during our learning sequence. The following preview pages perfectly describe our learning sequence. I started the lesson with a quick brainpopjr video on contractions. We paused the four minute video throughout to determine the contraction before Annie reveals to Moby how the sentences are manipulated. Following the video introduction, we began a whole group activity. I'd already glued the chart label, doctor and contraction pill bottle to a piece of chart paper. The kids assisted me in locating the pill parts scattered in the center of the rug. As they're located, we glued them to our chart, corresponding with the correct pill bottle. Once we completed the whole group activity, students were given the "will" and "not" contraction foldable pages. I saved the mixed pages for the following day as a follow up to the concentration game. The foldables allowed independent practice while writing a contraction. The next day, my students worked in groups playing a contraction matching game. The game provided practice with a variety of mixed contractions. My low level students worked to match the puzzle parts while my higher level students place the puzzle parts upside down and played concentration. Once the game was complete, my students were given the mixed practice foldable pages to complete. The day of the investigation, my students were given a doctor hat {nurse, but I didn't tell them}. They glued the blackline to a sentence strip and wore in the operation room. Here's what the kid's desk looked like as the activity began. The day went well with the prescribed activity below....
