Love staring at geodes? Do agates make your heart pitter patter? We recently attended a rock and crystal themed birthday party (cool idea, right?) and we had fun "painting" these super simple "watercolor" geodes for our birthday card. Wait a moment. Why am I putting everything in quotations? Well, keep reading to find out! (Spoiler alert- No watercolors were used!) Let's "Paint*" Geode cards with Kids (*No fancy watercolors needed for this fun kid craft!) Note: This post contains affiliate links. This means I make a small bit of change when you purchase items through the links. Thank you for your support and the grocery money! For my full disclosure policy, click here. How to "Paint" Geode Cards with Kids Grab a thicker type of paper. (Any sort of watercolor paper or heavier drawing paper will do. Don't use printer paper! It will get fuzzy and gross with water.) Then, look up geodes online. (We liked the blue ones, but I've seen some really gorgeous almost rainbow colored ones!) Grab your washable markers (yup! That's the trick) and draw a whole bunch geode-esque loops one inside of another. Grab a Q-tip and begin wetting your paper to make the marker colors bleed. The effect is really beautiful and almost watercolor-esque. (Note: For the best effect, trace each loop instead of smearing all the colors together. ) Then, while the paper is still wet, grab some other colored markers and trace over your design. This will give you an even lovelier blurry edge look. Don't forget to draw the thin crusty rock outline on the outside of your geode! For that last bit of oomph, use some glitter glue and just trace over your geode. This adds a touch of glamorous sparkle. Bam! Bam! Wait till the glue dries and you'll love the results! This is a cute, one-day lesson I found over at davinciswings.blogspot.com. I had pinned this lesson months ago and decided since Spring has sprung and the bugs will be out...what better time to do symmetrical bugs? Also, the 2nd and 3rd graders are working on lines of symmetry. So, we discussed examples of things around the room and in nature that are symmetrical. I drew several shapes on the board and the students agreed on which ones were symmetrical and which ones were not. And, lastly, I showed them examples from Da Vinci's Wings so they could see some student work. (I have no idea why this is in italics, but just go with it...my 'I' button is not working at the moment...) Here are some examples from 2nd grade:
