Jesus Christ's True Cross was discovered in 326 by St. Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor St. Constantine the Great, during a pilgrimage she made to Jerusalem. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was then built at the site of the discovery, by order of Sts. Helena and Constantine. The church was dedicated nine years later, with a portion of the cross placed inside it. Other legends explain that in 614, a portion of the cross was carried away from the church by the Persians, and remained missing until it was recaptured by the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius in 628. Initially taken to Constantinople, the cross was returned to the church the following year. September 14 is always a fast day and the eating of meat, dairy products and fish is prohibited. The Feast of the Exaltation has a one-day Forefeast and an eight-day Afterfeast. On the eve of the feast before small vespers the priest, having prepared a tray with the cross placed on a bed of fresh basil leaves or flowers, covered with an aër (liturgical veil), places it on the table of prothesis; after that service, the priest carries the tray on his head preceded by lighted candles and the deacon censing the cross, processing to the holy table. The bringing out of the cross and the exaltation ceremony occur at matins. The normal antiphons are replaced by special verses from the psalms 22, 74, and 99, which have direct reference to Christ's crucifixion on the Cross. A special hymn replaces the Trisagion hymn, as it is sung, the faithful prostrate. The epistle reading is from I Corinthians 1:18-24, and says that "the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." The gospel reading is taken from John 19:6-11, 13-20, 25-28, and 30-35 together. This long reading is the passion account. Troparion (Tone 1) O Lord, save Thy people, And bless Thine inheritance. Grant victory to the Emperor [or "Thy people" or "the Orthodox Christians"] Over the barbarians, [or "their enemies"] And by the power of Thy Cross Preserve Thy commonwealth. [or "estate" or "habitation"] Since basil (which was found at the site where the True Cross was buried) is used to decorate a silver plate with a cross, along with flowers, after the service the basil would be taken house and used to bless the house. It is then kept at the icon corner and a little bit burnt each time in the censer. One idea to help children celebrate is lighting a candle under a Cross to commemorate this holy day. Burn some of the basil received from Divine Liturgy as a "burnt offering" to Christ our God! You could also cook a meal using basil in the food to remember the place where the True Cross was found by St. Helena. Wine and Olive Oil are allowed, so perhaps a simple Italian dish with lots of basil! This Tomato, Basil and Lemon Zucchini Pasta look like a perfect dish to celebrate the Elevation Feast Day! St. Joseph’s Day is a major feast day celebrated in Sicily where my dad’s grandparents were born. Legend has it that the people of Sicily were suffering through a severe drought in the Middle Ages and prayed to St. Joseph to send rain. They commemorate the coming of the rain each year on March 19, St. Joseph’s Day, which is also the day Father’s Day is celebrated throughout Italy.

We've reached the end of the school year, and my students are well, a little restless, as I can imagine yours are too. :) With the time that we have left, I've decided to try some high interest Catholic topics to keep them learning and (hopefully) engaged during our last classes- things like Eucharistic Miracles, incorrupt Saints, the Stigmata, etc.) One group is going to be studying Marian Apparitions, a perfect topic for this month of May. My hope is to help develop Marian devotion and understanding of the guidance Mary still gives to the Church. I also want the students to more readily recognize different Marian titles and devotions and their symbols. I used these Marian prayer cards to intro the lesson and talk about titles of Mary we know, as well as the symbols, etc. in the images. (These lovely cards are from Avery & Co on Etsy.) On the back of this booklet, I provided a list of Marian titles (certainly not exhaustive, but a good place to start) and a list of (what I think are) Vatican approved apparitions. I talked with the students about the purpose of Marian Apparitions, and how they can be approved for devotion but that we are not required to believe private revelation- it does not (and cannot) change the content of our faith. I tried to find a reliable source that lists all the Vatican approved Marian apparitions, but couldn't locate a single exhaustive source. This list is the best I could find by cross referencing several places. If you know of a good, reliable website to check, please let me know! Once the students chose a Marian Apparition, we got started on research. They looked for basic facts like where, when, and to whom the apparition occurred. We used the internet (again- would love to have a specific reliable site to have them use!) and my collection of Marian books. (You can see some of them in this post). The students also had to summarize the message or purpose of the apparition. On the front, there is space to draw an image of the apparition or list the symbols described. Then, to work in a little more content no matter the apparition chosen, I had them read a few paragraphs in the Catechism and summarize some Marian facts. And finally to develop some higher level thinking, I asked them to consider what we can learn from this apparition and the message shared for the Church today. Finally, the students will share a little mini report on the apparition they chose with their classmates, so we are all learning more about these Marian devotions. So far it's working great and been a high interest way to use some of our last days this school year. I hope that it might be a good resource for you as well! Feel free to add in the comments or send me an email if you have any great books or websites that you think would be helpful for this project- I'd love your input! This Catholic Divine Mercy Craft is perfect for October near St. Faustina's Feast Day, which is October 5. It is also perfect for the 2nd Sunday of Easter, which Catholics celebrate as Divine Mercy Sunday. Looking at it, you might look at this and panic, thinking “Oh my class is too crazy for this!” I encourage you to pause.... because I thought I was crazy too when I first created it. My first grade students pleasantly surprised me and it went really well! Included: Directions Outline of the Divine Mercy Image Divine Mercy Chaplet Handout Directions 1. Before you begin, write the students’ names on the backs of their papers. 2. Place a red blob of paint on the left side of Jesus’ Most Sacred Heart, and a blue blob of paint on the right side. It helps to dilute the paint with a little bit of water. It makes for easy blowing! 3. Give each student a straw. I cut the straw to be about 4-5 inches long. 4. Tell the students to blow the paint in a diagonal line from Jesus’ heart to the corner outside his feet. 5. Let dry! 6. Optional: Glue their art onto a black construction paper frame. 7. Optional: Glue the Divine Mercy Chaplet (included) to the back of the art.
