This is the packet I gave to our incoming sunbeams last year at the end of November. I also gave one to the nursery to review as well to help our Sunbeams get ready for Primary. Just click on the picture, save & print I used my comb binder to make little books for each child. This year I am on the look out for a small packet of crayons to go with each one. We have also used these for seating. Not all of my sunbeams recognized their written names so I made charts with their name, a boy or girl and a animal or insect. We placed them on the chairs with tape for the first few months until they got used to taking seats on their own. Teachers could move them to sit where they felt they would work the best. I know November is 5 months away, but its nice to plan ahead.

Who doesn't LOVE Bingo? This is a fun version of it that I made up for singing time. Easy to do! Create a Bingo card with the letters S-I-N-G-O across the top. Then under each letter are the numbers 1-5 in mixed up orders. I made a card for each class. Make sure no two cards are alike. I have no printer ink, so I had to hand make my Bingo cards this time!! You can use this to teach a new song or for review other songs. I have in a jar pieces of paper to draw out after they sing what ever song or portion of a song I ask. They get a number of letters based upon how well they sing. I would draw any where form one bingo piece up to four! The pieces were in a jar as follows; S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, N1, ...etc. I think you get the idea. When I drew the pieces I would call out the coordinates. The teachers had each been given a marker to mark them off. Some teachers did it themselves, some let a child do it. Here are some examples of how teachers marked them. So...what do you win if you get a SING-O BING-O? When a class gets a bingo they get to choose which song we sing. I let them know this right at the start so that they would all be thinking of a song! I was a lot of fun and an easy way to get A LOT of singing done!
Getting ready for General Conference? Come check out THIS linky party and ideas! Come join in on the fun at the After General Conference Soiree, starts Friday, October 13th!! What do you have in your Primary bag? Here's what's in mine... -Magnets- I have both the circle magnets but I also have a magnet strip that you can take of the backing and stick it onto something, I usually use this if the kids want it as a magnet or I run out of the circle magnets for the board. -Chalk and Eraser- I have the colored kind, the kids love them. For time fillers, which is rare, they enjoy playing Hangman on the board, my rule is they have to pick a word from the scriptures that we read. -Gospel Art Book- whenever I can't find a picture that I want to use in the manual's pictures, typically the book has what I'm looking for. - Scissors- I've come to learn that sometimes you need more handouts then you think... I typically print out 2 or 3 more handouts then I need and just stick them into my binder for the just in case, and I can cut them out if needed. If I don't need them they go into a file at home. -Tape and Gluestick- I enjoy puzzles with a hidden message on the back, put the puzzles together flip it over and there's a song or a quote on the back... love... Or when we did the Armor of God, the kids each were able to tape or glue their armor onto their guys. -Playdough- just little containers of it (party pack)... if I forget a game or other object(s) for the lesson, I have playdough and we play a "Cranium" type game where the kids can either draw with chalk or sculpt with the dough. Very fun and the kids love it. I also have let the kids use a small playdough to create a figure resembling the hero in the scriptures and let them keep it. Just a couple weeks ago, one of the girls in my class was telling me about her King Benjamin figure how she has it on her dresser. Awe, touched heart :) -Sketch Book- this just blank paper bound in a book so they don't go all over the place, it fun seeing the pictures that the kids draw and color after watching a scripture video or read a scripture story. -Markers/ Colored Pencils/Crayons/ Pencils- for the drawing/coloring I keep a stash of markers and twistable crayons when we pull out coloring pages or blank pages from the sketch book. Time Fillers- These I have but I rarely need them, we usually go right to the bell I do however keep my Articles of Faith Cards and Faith in God for boys and girls as well as a Children's Songbook. If the kids want they can work on a project their working on or they can study the Articles of Faith, or they can draw and color pictures for the songs. I also have a bean bag to play "hot potato" with the song for the Books of the Book of Mormon. These are needed rarely, but I keep them for the just in case and as the Spirit moves me. -Extra Small Books of Mormon (or is it Book of Mormons?--- The Best Two Years' Debate), I think in the 1 1/2 years since teaching Primary, I've had 1 or 2 weeks that each of the kids has their scriptures, so it's nice to have extras so everyone can follow along and they are pretty cheap and small. They can be found at the Distribution Center. -Pocket Kleenex- I know, I know, you're like... kleenex??? Really, as a must have... but without fail each week those boys in the back HAVE to go in the middle of class to blow their nose, get a drink, etc.... and it takes the class a few minutes to get back on track, so at the beginning those that need drinks get them, those that need the bathroom go.... and if they need a tissue I whip one out... like Mary Poppins. It's very handy now especially with the weather changing and nose bleeds as well. I LOVE the 2013 theme, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. I'm excited to introduce the song this Sunday... This is a brand new calling for me and it will be my first Sunday as a chorister, but whether you're new or old, I think its a great time to "Get to know each other"! So, I was going to quickly introduce myself (My fav primary song, a picture of my family, that kind of stuff) and have the pianist introduce himself as well. Since I especially want to get to know the children, I am going to ask them questions and have them stand up if it's something that applies to them, for instance, who has their own bedroom? Who has a baby brother or sister? Who's favorite color is red? Who has brown eyes? Who loves french fries? Who has been on an airplane? etc... this way, we're all getting to know each other, but also we get to see how different and unique we all are! Perfect for this years theme! I'll have the pianist play the 1st verse of "I am a child of god" and ask the kids to stand up if they know what the song is called and what we all have in common. :) I found these great cut outs on sugardoodle, here, I put them on Popsicle sticks and Im going to mix them up, so the kids can put them in their right order. This 1st verse is all about home and family, so I want the kids to show on their fingers how many people are in their family when we get to that part! :) (Since were getting to know each other and all ;). After singing verse 1 and the chorus a few times, were going to spend the rest of the time singing songs about US! Songs like: I hope they call me on a ission I'm trying to be like Jesus I lived in Heaven I am like a Star Jesus once was a little child We are different Jesus wants me for a sunbeam The Church of Jesus Christ I Am a Child of God The songs are going to be written inside these different color socks, why socks you ask? haha, because "lead, me guide me, walk beside me" has been on my mind, so naturally, I thought of FEET! :) I may leave them on this board, but I think taping them underneath chairs would be fun too.... I am going to have the new sunbeams come up and use props the nursery's props for a few of the songs, like, these sunbeam necklaces for "Jesus wants me for a sunbeam"... ....and these foam stars (from the $1 store glued onto popsicle sticks) for "I am like a star". Props are fun, but mostly, I just want everyone to see the cute *new* Sunbeams faces on their first day of Primary! For the other few songs, if there is still time, I thought the children could hide the socks and play hot/cold?? Not too original, but hey. :) HAPPY 1st SUNDAY of the YEAR everybody! Enjoy it!!

I was in charge of our Primary Singing time at church a few weeks ago and decided to play a simple game of tic-tac-toe to help us practice a song. It was so easy to put together, the kids had fun, and we got a good practice on one of my favorite songs! Supplies: Construction paper in Red and Blue Scissors Tape Chalk Prep Work: Draw an X on a piece of red construction paper. Cut it out and trace 5 more onto more red paper. Draw an O on a piece of blue construction paper and do the same thing. After they're all cut out, put them in a bag with some tape and chalk and you're all ready to go! Singing Time! I wanted to practice the song, "My Heavenly Father Loves Me" (Children's Songbook, pg. ). I think kids learn songs well when they sing them over and over. This game was a way to sing the song over and over and not get bored because we had a fun game going on at the same time! First, I drew a tic-tac-toe grid on the chalkboard, and taped up the X's on one side of it, and the O's on the other side. I split the kids into 2 groups: Team X and Team O. Here's how it worked with the younger kids (Jr. Primary, ages 3-8). The younger kids don't know this song very well, and the song is kind of long, so I chose to break it up into parts. I sang the first 1-2 lines of the song, and then had Team X repeat those lines. Then I did the same thing with Team O. So the kids got to hear and/or sing the same line 4 times. Repetition is key. :) After both teams heard and sang that line, then I chose 1 person from each team to come up and place an X and O on the board. Then we went onto the next line, and so on. It took about 4-6 turns before one of the teams had won. At the end we sang the song all the way through. We even had enough time to play another round! *Note: A few of the younger kids are a little bit more sensitive to winning and losing, so I made sure to have each team turn to the other and say "good job" to show how to be a good sport. :) Luckily for us, both teams each won a round so everyone was happy. Here's how it worked with the older kids (Sr. Primary, ages 8-11) The older kids know this song pretty well. They even know the second verse! So instead of the repetition, I played a fill in the blank game with each team. I went through the song in order and said a line to the song. Wherever I stopped the line, they had to tell me what the next word was. For example, "Whenever I hear the song of a _______," (the answer is BIRD) After each team got a chance to fill in a blank, I chose 1 person from each team to come put an X and O on the board. Then I did it all again. When the game ended, we sang the whole song all the way through. :) Again, we had enough time to play another round, and AGAIN, both teams each won one round.
