Thanks so much for supporting my efforts with this blog! This is a fun activity that we did to go along with the Bible story of Joseph during Gv's Latticed Learning time. I wanted to come up with something to correspond with Joseph's interpretations of dreams and during the first day of the week, while we were listening to the Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat soundtrack, I got an idea during one of the songs. With the Elvis-inspired rhythm of Song of the King still pulsing in my head, I sat down and whipped up this Fat & Skinny Cows Dream printable. You can download your free copy here and this is what you'll need to direct your child to do: First, cut out all the cows, mix up the pieces, and then spread them out onto your work surface. Have your child sort them into groups on the two clouds. Gustily sing along with us, hip-gyrations optional: Well I was wandering along by the banks of the river When seven fat cows came up out of the Nile, uh-huh And right behind these fine healthy animals came seven other cows, skinny and vile, uh-huh Even though the fat cows show up before the skinny cows, Gv put the skinny cows all on the left. I decided I wasn't in a persnickety enough mood to have her switch them, so I let her just glue them down like this. After the cows are all glued down, have your child draw a line from one skinny cow to one fat cow (because the skinny ones ate the fat ones). Well the thin cows ate the fat cows which I thought would do them good, uh-huh But it didn't make them fatter like such a monster supper should Gv then added her own spin on this activity, because she decided to color in the fat cows with fat markers and the skinny cows with skinny markers. Bonus points for an activity's extension that wasn't anticipated! We just had fun with this little project. It gave Gv a chance to cut and glue (which she loves) and then allowed her the opportunity to practice sorting skills and one-to-one correspondence, along with counting all the cows. Plus, it gave us an excuse to keep looping Song of the King on the iPod as we sang and danced along to its fun beat. Hey, hey, hey Joseph Won't you tell poor old Pharaoh What does this crazy dream mean? Oh yeah So what do you think? Ready to rock out to Elvis-influenced tunes while sorting out these crazy cows? I'd love to hear! Either leave a comment below or email me at lisahealy (at) outlook (dot) com. Christian crafts for kids: ideas for Sunday school, vacation Bible school, CCD classes and home school.
This is so interesting for the students. After making the poster, they really understand what Jesus is talking about.
Today we talked about David and Goliath and how David had courage. You can find his Scripture Hero Chart to download here. We watched the LDS Scripture video about David and Goliath (28). We also watched Veggie Tales: Dave and the Giant Pickle which is a fun little version of the story and promotes self esteem. We then measured about how tall Goliath was (nine feet) with yarn and hung it up so that we could compare how tall we were to Goliath's height. I am around the same height David probably was so that gave them an idea of how much bigger Goliath was. A Year of FHE has a fun coloring page and great lesson. We also talked about "Goliath's" that come into our lives (peer pressure, bad language, etc.) and how we combat those things (prayer, Holy Ghost, going to church, etc.) This lesson has some great ideas. The boys had a great time acting out the story. We used marshmallows instead of slings and rocks. We had a pretty fun day talking about David and Goliath.

I have been waiting to teach Habit 6 to our fifth graders because team building activities are my favorite activities to do with groups of kids! Habit 6 is all about the we, not the I. Together Is Better: I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different than me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas to solve problems because I know that by teaming with others we can create better solutions than anyone of us can alone. I am humble. To begin, we each did a personality assessment that I found available to download here. Students rank themselves on the qualities they feel are most important to them across each row. It is important to learn about your own strengths and weaknesses so you can function best in a group. It is also important to learn about your group member's strengths and weaknesses so you can function best in a group. After we all figured out which "fruit" best described our personality, I told them which fruit they would be paired up with for a group challenge. They read through their partner's descriptions to think about ways that would improve their teamwork and communication skills. Then I introduced the challenge...the LEANING TOWER OF FEETZA! I found this free activity on a great website filled with team building activities, Playmeo. I typed up a quick synopsis to explain the goal of the activity, and with such a simple task (or so we all had thought), I set them off to start right away! Hilarity ensued, conflict ensued, problem solving ensued, chaos ensued! We all had a really great time and an even better debrief session on the challenge, on synergizing and on how knowing more about ourselves can make such a different in our everyday interactions with others.
The lesson for Naaman will end our study on Elijah and Elisha. We will finish the lapbooks and they can take them home. There is a door hanger with a box pocket. I printed the door hanger on blue cardstock, and Naaman and the front pocket on white cardstock. The kids glued a large craft stick inside of Naaman so he could be moved in the pocket. See the photo below for more! Review: We have been studying Elisha. He was a prophet after Elijah was taken to heaven in the flaming chariot. The widow had told Elisha that she didn't have any money and the creditors were going to take her sons. Elisha told the widow (a woman whose husband has died) to gather up all the pots from everyone she could. After they had the pots collected, they closed the doors and poured oil from one bottle into every jar they had borrowed! That was a miracle! Then, there was a couple that fed Elisha and had a bedroom built for Elisha when he stayed at their home. Gehazi was a servant that was traveling with Elisha. They were talking and Gehazi told Elisha that the couple did not have any children. Elisha told the woman that she would have a son the next year, which she did. The son was working in the fields one day and had a headache. He died but Elisha came and stretched himself on the boy and he was alive again! Lesson is found in 2 Kings 5: There was a commander in the army of the king of Syria. His name was Naaman, and he was considered great and honorable, but he had leprosy. (explain) The Syrians had gone out on raids and brought back a girl from Israel. She was a servant helping Naaman’s wife. The captive servant told Naaman's wife “It’s too bad that the prophet that lives in Samaria isn’t here because he could cure Naaman.” Naaman told the king of Syria what the servant had told his wife about Elisha the prophet. The king of Syria sent a letter to the king of Israel, along with gold & silver and 10 changes of clothing. The letter stated that he, the king of Syria, was writing to inform the King of Israel that He has sent his servant and commander of his army, Naaman, to him so that he could cure Naaman of his leprosy. When the king of Israel received the letter, he tore his clothes in frustration and said Am I God? To kill or make someone live? Am I supposed to cure this man of his leprosy? Why does this king of Syria have a quarrel with me? Elisha heard that the king had ripped his clothes and asked the king to let Naaman come visit with him. Elisha would let Naaman know that there was a prophet of God in Israel. Naaman went in his horse and chariot and stood at the door of Elisha’s house. Elisha sent a messenger to tell Naaman to go wash in the Jordan River seven times and he would be healed. But Naaman was furious! He said to himself “Well, surely, he can come to me himself and wave his hand over me and cure me! And, why that river? There are other rivers! Why can't I wash in one of the other better waters?” He left in a rage and his servants went to Naaman and asked him, “If Elisha the prophet told you to do something great, wouldn’t you do it?" The servant told Naaman that Elisha told him to ‘Wash and be clean.’” Naaman went down in the Jordan River, just like Elisha told him to. He dipped himself seven times and he was healed! The skin from the leprosy was just like a child's! Naaman went to thank Elisha and said he would only worship the God of Israel, the true God, and not idols anymore. He begged Elisha to take gifts for healing him, but Elisha didn’t want any gifts. Ga-hey-zee) Elisha’s servant Gehazi followed after Naaman and told him that Elisha changed his mind about the reward. Naaman gladly gave him silver and clothing. Gehazi went back and hid the items from Naaman in his house and went to see Elisha. Elisha asked, “Where have you been?” Gehazi told Elisha “I didn’t go anywhere.” Elisha told him that he knew Gehazi went to get money and clothing from Naaman and because he lied, Gehazi would be struck with the leprosy disease of Naaman. When Gehazi left, he was snow white full of leprosy. (Notes: Elisha died of an illness in 2 Kings13:14 & 20) I made these door hangers before class so they were ready for the kids to use. They cut out Naaman, folded him and glued him together with a large craft stick on the bottom inside. Then, they could put him up through the bottom of the pocket and make the leprous side of him go up and down seven times, then turn him around to be clean. Click here to print it. Click here to download the worksheet. Click here to download the updated visuals. Not all are shown. This file is for Naaman only. Click here to download the pictures to color. (These are the same as the visuals but are black & white.) This lapbook is being used with each of the Elijah and Elisha lessons. Click here to see more. I saw a circle-style graphic organizer and thought it was a great way to organize practicing WH-questions. Download includes a blank question wheel I tried it as homework for both my 3rd grade and Kindergarten language groups... ...and they loved it! They were each very proud of their work. (It also gave me a good sample of their question writing skills!) So, I've made several more to pull out as homework as I work with WH-questions. Bonus: Progress Monitoring! I look forward to comparing student work over time and seeing if there is a change in question content as well as question grammar/conventions. ...and I've decided to share :) Examples from my Free Download (found at my TpT store HERE) (Word clipart) Enjoy! Let me know how your student like it!
